Early Monday morning, the Baltimore City Fire Department received multiple calls for a two-alarm fire at a row house on the 200 block of South Stricker. Though the house appeared to be a vacant property, there were reports of people trapped inside. Without hesitation, the firefighters entered the fully engulfed home to battle the blaze and search for any sign of life. During the operation, the building suffered a catastrophic collapse when a significant portion gave way and fell on top of the group of firefighters. Lieutenant Paul Butrim died at the scene. Firefighters Kenny Lacayo and Kelsey Sadler were rushed to the hospital but were unable to be revived. A fourth firefighter was also critically injured. A subsequent investigation yielded a person of interest caught on a nearby security camera around the time of the fire. There is currently a $100,000 reward for information leading to his identification.

Lieutenant Paul Butrim was no stranger to putting himself in harm’s way to save a life after having spent 16-years on the job. In 2015, he rushed into a burning apartment building and rescued a child from a bedroom. Paul received an award for his valor that day.

Firefighter/Paramedic Kenny Lacayo spent over a decade with the nearby Wheaton Volunteer Rescue Squad, in addition to his 7-years of dedicated service with the BCFD. Kenny’s exceptional skills as a firefighter and paramedic were matched by his bright smile and his unfailing good nature.

Firefighter/Paramedic Kelsey Sadler was a 15-year veteran of the Baltimore City Fire Department. On the day of the fire, she was acting Lieutenant for Engine Company 14. For her bravery and sacrifice, Kelsey was posthumously promoted to the rank of Lieutenant.
