I know very little about the author Rebecca Stead, but I did read this beautiful line from one of her books: "If you took every tear cried by everyone on earth on one single day and put them in a container, how big would that container need to be? Could you fill a water tower? Three water towers? It’s one of those unknowable things. There has to be an answer, but we’ll never know what it is.” We can't know, but God does. In the Bible, Psalm 56:8 says this, "Record my misery; list my tears on your scroll—are they not in your record?" God knows the about the tears you cry. He cares about the reasons you've cried them.

As I posted before, in January I spent a few days down in Clovis Hills. I was there to learn from the pastors at . That goal was accomplished and I came home inspired, and frankly, a better pastor. Churches often get a reputation for being competitive with one another, but in my 19 years in ministry I've experienced something very different. The pastors around me have been my friends and been willing to help me and invest in me. I'm thankful for that. I'm also thankful for beautiful sunsets. 🌅

This is a peacock, right? I met her outside of a hotel in Fresno; apparently she is there a lot greeting guests and what not. I'll be honest, birds freak me out a little bit. They are beautiful though. God's creative work is incredible.

and I were able to get away for a few days last week. We attended a couples retreat for pastors. Like you, we had no idea what that meant; we were worried it was going to be super awkward. Instead, we had a lot of fun, met some wonderful people, and came back refreshed. We also ate like royalty.

This picture is from a resort near where we stayed. I thought it was a cool spot.

Last month I was in Fresno visiting in to learn from their pastors. My return flight was cancelled. My friend at was supposed to be on the same flight so we ended up playing a game of planes, trains, and automobiles to get home. We were able to fly out of Sacramento, but before going to the airport we went to . Their good coffee and cool vibe helped make the day’s adventure a fun memory.

Naomi Luhn jokingly posted that January has 97 days. I get it! This has been a long month; I can’t believe Christmas was only 33 days ago. Anyway, we had a great Christmas and I want to share a few of those pictures. This one is of Hudson on Christmas morning after he opened his stocking.

2023 was a wild year. It was full of new opportunities (like teaching at Corban) and big changes (new church and new home). Like every year, there was bad and good. This year, more than others, has reminded me of the value of friends. From those friends to students to colleagues to family, I am thankful for the people that were a part of my life in 2023. Mostly, I’m grateful for God and the way he proved himself faithful through all of it.
