Establishing consent-based care is vital when SLPs work with transgender and gender non-conforming (TGNC) individuals during neurorehabilitative care. This model centers patient autonomy, awareness, and self-advocacy.
Tenets may include:
🔹 Before procedures: Explain the purpose, steps, risks, and discomfort; provide language to pause or stop; answer all questions before getting consent.
🔹 When discussing impact and diagnoses: Emphasize it’s not the patient’s fault; describe prognosis in community-specific terms; address potential barriers; include care partners.
🔹 When planning care: Center the patient’s interests and concerns; be considerate of the patient’s specific contexts for functional goals.
Tenets developed by Ruchi Kapila and Haley Fulk.
