Summertime Blooms!!

Using vintage vessels with a little bit of history and special memories only makes our floral designs all the more special. I spoke about this antique tea pot that I found over twenty years ago in one our past episodes. It’s in the same family of pieces with a vase that belonged to my Great Grandmother.

All these blooms were cut from the garden at my old house and my mom’s garden. Putting special flowers with special containers makes the moment all the better!🥰

Marigolds are a great cut for summer and fall!!

ASCFG Floral Feature, Marigold, Tagetes sp.

Marigolds, with their diverse species, can be a valuable asset for flower farmers. While wholesale florist sales might not be your main focus, marigolds are ideal for market bouquets. Many farmers receive frequent inquiries for these vibrant blooms throughout the season. Marigolds are essential for holidays like Día de los Mu***os and Diwali, and if you target the right customer base, they can sell out during these celebrations. Keep in mind that marigolds tend to slow their blooming toward the end of the hot summer, so plan a final succession planting in late summer to ensure fall blooms. Don't forget to keep deadheading for continuous flowering!

Mother’s Day isn't just another day on the calendar—it's a pivotal event in the floral industry, marking one of the busiest and most vibrant weeks for florists across the globe. Flowers go beyond mere gifts; they are profound symbols of love and appreciation, playing an essential role in how we honor mothers. Despite the exhaustion that comes with this bustling week, the excitement of contributing to such a meaningful celebration makes every moment worthwhile.

This spirit of dedication extends from the tireless growers to the delivery drivers, each integral to the journey of every bouquet that expresses the beauty and sentiment of Mother’s Day. We're not just crafting arrangements; we're crafting tokens of gratitude and admiration.

This week, we're thrilled to feature a replay of my conversation with Sandra Sigman, owner of Les Fleurs in Massachusetts and author of "French Blooms." Sandra’s own floral path was deeply influenced by her mother, and further inspired by her experiences in Paris. As a professional ice skater exploring the city's rich floral culture, she cultivated a vision that would eventually become Les Fleurs—a thriving florist that melds exquisite flowers, French allure, and relentless passion.

As we navigate this busy week, let’s remember: Mother’s Day isn't just another date on the calendar. It's a profound celebration of all mothers, articulated through the timeless language of flowers. We are honored to share in this journey together, bringing joy and beauty to every mother's special day.

Wishing you an inspiring and fulfilling Mother’s Day week!

The Flower Podcast with Scott

I've been in the floral industry for over 25 years. Although most of that time has been spent in sales for a wholesale company, I share the same passion for flowers as you.

My love for flowers began as a child walking in the footsteps of my grandmother. What started as helping in the vegetable garden grew to expand from the pink petunias to the splendid blossom of viburnum on the family farm. My other grandfather had a love for trees and enjoyed collecting incredible specimens of ginkos and redwoods, not something often seen in Northwest Ohio.

My interest in flowers only grew from there. Throughout childhood, my family let me dabble in the home landscape planting seeds, shrubs, and most of all experimenting with flowers. YES! I was that guy, not with trophies on my wall, but with grow lights and plants in my bedroom.

My floral journey eventually led to a degree in horticulture. Just before graduating, I couldn't decide on a field to pursue,I LIKED THEM ALL. Dr. Alan Armitage, my then advisor at University of Georgia, received a phone call from a floral wholesaler and described the kind of person they were looking for to join the company....
