Founded in 1952, Randy's Donuts’ original venue in the LA suburb of Inglewood caught filmmakers’ attention with its 32-foot donut atop the bakery. That giant donut got the original Randy’s into the TV show “The Simpsons” as well as movies that include “Iron Man 2,” in which title star Robert Downey Jr. had a snack while sitting inside the doughnut hole. This week in Ahwatukee and the surrounding area: Three 204-square-foot monuments proposed for Upper Canyon have been radically reduced in size, as reported on by Executive Editor Paul Maryniak in our cover story. Below that, we put the spotlight on local man Nick Witherill and his newly invented Biñho Board game.

Elsewhere on the pages of the Foothills News, we detail Ahwatukee’s planned first data center; the reason behind a delay in a new insurance program to protect Phoenix homeowners in the event of a water line break; and the arrival of the famed Randy’s Donuts, which you may have seen in “The Simpsons” or “Iron Man 2.”

Though the Sept. 28 invitation-only shower is private, the public can help make it a festive occasion for these moms in need. Residents are being called upon to donate new items for the young women and their soon-to-be or newly-born children.
