Hi, Folks.

For years at AppleJazz, John Kane enjoyed playing Georgia on My Mind. He was amazing each time he played it and it was often a different arrangement whenever he did it. Sometimes tenor, sometimes soprano, often both horns. It was HIS song.

As a matter of fact, when he retired from sax playing, I wouldn’t program this song at AJZ because I didn’t want to hear any other version than John’s.

Beautifully recorded at the 1995 AppleJazz Festival, this is another treasure from the vast library of AppleJazz archives. The video is up on the official YouTube channel now. Click the link below to watch.

We are celebrating the life and music of reedman John Kane. He was a founding member of the AppleJazz Band in 1984 and was a soulful, hearty, and legendary sax man in Upstate NY. An extremely versatile performer, he played and recorded professionally (tenor, flute and soprano sax) through six decades beginning circa 1955 with the Campus Kings Dixieland Band in Cortland NY. He played mainstream Jazz, R&B, and soul with equal skill, and he played with many groups including the Soul Brothers, Dave Hanlon’s Cookbook, Out of the Blue, the Jazz Minds, and the AppleJazz Band. We are so fortunate to have had John to listen to and inspire us for so many years. He was a legend.

Another addition to the upcoming ATMOS recording of Michael Andrew and the Atomic Big Band. We spent the day at Eastern Sky Studios in Winter Springs recording 16 tracks of guitar and piano with Bobby Koelble on guitars and Bob Thornton on the Steinway grand. Michael Andrew and Bob Thornton did a few takes of the Gershwin song, “Embraceable You.” A tremendously successful day. Thanks to David Brown for his terrific studio and engineering.

The Charlotte County Jazz Society presented the John Allred Quartet in concert on October 14th. We were pleased to have so many AppleJazz artists on the stage. John Allred, Eddie Metz and Phil Flanigan have all recorded for AppleJazz and hopefully Per Danielsson will be added to that list soon. The concert ended with John Allred and Herb Bruce playing a couple of duets and dedicated these to John’s dad, Bill Allred. It was a delightful concert and first class in every way.

We are super excited about our new ATMOS recording. Drums and bass were recorded over two days for Michael Andrew and his Atomic Big Band on AppleJazz Records. More sessions coming for other instruments soon. Release will be later this year. Attending the session were Kendall Thomsen (recording engineer), Michael Andrew (vocalist), Veit Renn (ATMOS mixing engineer) Charlie Bertini (producer), and David Brown (owner of Eastern Sky Studios). Drummer Paul Parker and bassist Charlie Silva laid down the foundation for this exciting ATMOS record.

The Holiday in Homer (NY) festival today, July 20 includes over 125 artisans and crafters, lots of great food, live music and entertainment for all ages. Holiday in Homer is held on the beautiful Congregational church green in downtown Homer. AppleJazz submitted our one-of-a-kind quilt for display. Proud to be a part of this Upstate NY event!

AppleJazz Records’ Charlie Bertini and the Bertini Family and are proud of our 36th year at St Mary’s School in Cortland NY of offering music scholarships! With over 135 scholarships so far, students received full and partial scholarships to continue playing their instruments with the phenomenal music directors Eileen Allen and Julie Carr in band and/or orchestra.

These young students perform for monetary awards that go toward their continuing music education or toward musical instrument purchases. Charlie Bertini of AppleJazz Records was pleased to assist Kendall Thomsen (SPL LLC) for the onsite recording of the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra at the beautiful Steinmetz Hall in Orlando. This was the National Young Composers Challenge and six talented composers were honored, all under the age of 18! These finalists got to hear the orchestra perform their compositions and then will receive the recordings that we made of their works. AppleJazz was delighted to have this privilege.

We are celebrating the life of international trombonist, band leader, contractor and recording artist Bill Allred. On February 1, 2024, Bill left us at age 87, but he showered us with a legacy of jazz music. A trombone jazzman since his high school days in the Quad Cities, he moved to Orlando to be in the Magic Kingdom Band for the opening of Disney World in 1971. His music world exploded after that, as he formed and led many jazz bands and toured jazz festivals worldwide. His trombone playing was straight from the heart and as authentic as could be. A listener could tell in thirty seconds they were hearing Bill Allred’s incomparable style. He employed countless first-class musicians and every band he formed was one to be reckoned with. His reputation grew even more when he contracted an orchestra for Ray Charles. Ray liked the orchestra so much that he told his manager that whenever he came to Florida, he wanted Bill Allred to contract the musicians. In 1990, he formed Bill Allred’s Classic Jazz Band to tour the jazz festival circuit. Some fans of the band formed a fan club which grew to some 1,200 members. A key member of the band was his trombonist son, John Allred. These two men were astounding together and delighted listeners wherever they played. Bill made dozens of recordings with his many bands over the years and thankfully, we have these to listen to and to celebrate the rich musical legacy he has left us. Thanks for making our lives a little richer, Bill.
