What's your word for 2024?

I’ve been choosing a word for the year for over a decade. And it’s a practice I’ve passed on to the women of the See Jane Write Community too.

Your word can serve as your theme for the year. It can be a source of inspiration and motivation, a mantra, or even a rallying cry. Perhaps even a prayer.

Today on the See Jane Write blog I'm sharing my word for 2024 and some journaling prompts to help you choose a word of your own.

One of my favorite journal prompts is simple yet highly effective:

“What I really want to say is…”

This is a go-to writing prompt of April Stearns, founder of Wildfire Magazine, a publication for women diagnosed with breast cancer under the age of 50.

April and I have a lot in common — not just breast cancer. We both believe in the power of storytelling. We are also both passionate about helping other women share their stories. And we both believe in the power of journaling and blogging (which April calls journaling out loud).

Get to know more about April and hear her top tips for writing and sharing your story in the newest episode of The Writeous Babe Podcast.

In the episode, April also shares how journaling has helped so many aspects of life including cancer, business, body image, and intimacy issues.

If you're struggling to make time to write it could be because you have boundary issues.

Last week’s episode of The Writeous Babe Podcast is all about how you can use journaling to set and stick to personal boundaries.

I’m joined by Laura Quick of Good Grit Magazine for this episode. You’ll have to tune in to find out why I wanted her to help me out.

Let’s just say it has something to do with turning a Bible parable into a story about “getting crunk” in the club in the early 2000s and using that parable to realize it’s my God-given right to make myself a priority.

And trust me, even if you’re not the Bible-reading type, you should listen. Actually, you should especially listen if you're not the church-going type because this ain't your mama's Bible lesson.

In this episode you’ll also learn what an “askhole” is and what to do about them.

You’re stronger than you think you are, and I believe journaling can show you your strength.

This week on The Writeous Babe Podcast my guest Keaira Turner shares that she started journaling after her mother passed away. And after seeing how much journaling helped her work through her grief, she soon started using journaling for all areas of her life. Journaling has helped her build her confidence, start a business and sharpen her storytelling skills as a publicist.

Most of all when she looks back at old journal entries and she sees how far she’s come, she realizes that she’s stronger than she once thought she was.

You can hear more of Keaira’s story and get practical tips for starting your own journaling journey in this week’s episode.

I’ve been a fan of Kameron Monet's YouTube channel for years. But a few months ago, she shared a video that stuck with me. The video was about celebrating her road to 30. Now if you know me you know I haven’t been on the road to 30 in a VERY VERY long time. But the video resonated with me because it challenged what society says women should and shouldn’t be or do at certain ages. And the central message of the video was all about self-love.

To top things off, in the video Kameron was journaling! So I just had to have her on the podcast o talk about why she’s so excited about her 30s and the role that journaling has played in her self-love journey and her success as a content creator.

“The truth is no one of us can be free until everybody is free.” — Maya Angelou

Many people — Fannie Lou Hamer, Martin Luther King, Jr., Emma Lazarus— have said many different versions of this sentiment. And it’s a truth I’ve been thinking about a lot this Juneteenth weekend.

Here are some journal prompts to help you reflect on this too. Be sure to save and share. And for more journaling inspiration, check out The Writeous Babe Podcast.

✍🏾 How do you define freedom?
✍🏾 I feel most free when…
✍🏾 I am grateful for my freedom to…
✍🏾 I will continue to fight for my freedom to…
✍🏾 What actions will you take for the sake of your liberation?
✍🏾 What will you do in support of the liberation of others?
✍🏾 In what ways do you need to free your mind and how will you do it?

If you’ve been a part of my online community for a while, you’ve probably heard me say that I wrote my way through cancer. In this week’s episode of the Writeous Babe Podcast, I’m explaining exactly what that means.

Find out how I used a type of journaling called scripting to get through the toughest year of my life and learn how you can use journaling to write your way through anything too.

And don’t worry, even though we have to go to Cancerland for this episode, I promise it’s not depressing. My goal is for you to leave the episode full of hope!

Long post alert!

These are some of my favorite pictures of myself but not because of how I look.

These photos captured a moment when I was enjoying existing in my body without worrying about my body’s shape or size or even my body’s health.

You see, I’m obsessed with my body.

I don’t mean that in the way you may think. I’m not on a quest for six-pack abs or saving up for a BBL. What I mean is that my body is almost always on my mind.

Sometimes this is empowering. Other times it’s exhausting.

Sometimes I’m completely in love with my body – not because of how my body looks, but simply because my body is mine.

Other times I want to change every single thing about my body (well, almost everything. My curls and calf muscles are unmatched. LOL)

Sometimes, thanks to cancer, I feel I can’t trust my body. And because of cancer, no matter what, I’m almost always worried about whether or not my body is healthy.

Other times I wish I could just get through one day not thinking about my body at all.

As you might have guessed, I sort through all of this with journaling. And that’s what this week’s episode of the Writeous Babe Podcast is all about.

I’m discussing body love and body neutrality and how journaling can help with both. And I’m getting personal, sharing my body insecurities and reading a few pages from my journal too.

Journaling and meditation are two practices that can serve as the cornerstones of your self-care regimen.

I love journaling. In fact, I may be obsessed with it. So much so that I started a whole podcast about it.

That's why for this week's episode of The Writeous Babe Podcast -- which is all about journaling and meditation -- I'm joined by yoga and meditation coach Raven Holloway of Wellness Worx.

So, what does my journaling routine look like? Find out in the latest episode of The Writeous Babe Podcast.

In this episode -- Day in the Life of a Writeous Babe -- I also give you tips on how to start a very quick and easy journaling practice of your own.
