August’s supermoon is the first of four lunar spectacles

By MARCIA DUNN
August 19, 2024

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — Monday’s supermoon is the first of four this year.

During a supermoon, the full moon inches a little closer than usual to Earth. A supermoon isn’t bigger, but it can appear that way in the night sky, although scientists say the difference can be barely perceptible.

September’s supermoon will coincide with a partial lunar eclipse. October’s will be the year’s closest approach, and November’s will round out the year.

More a popular term than a scientific one, a supermoon occurs when a full lunar phase syncs up with an especially close swing around Earth. This usually happens only three or four times a year and consecutively, given the moon’s constantly shifting, oval-shaped orbit.

Floods from ‘training thunderstorms’ lead to dramatic rescues and 2 deaths in Connecticut

By DAVE COLLINS, KAREN MATTHEWS and MICHAEL R. SISAK
August 19, 2024

OXFORD, Conn. (AP) — Torrential rains turned streets into raging rivers in parts of Connecticut and New York’s Long Island, trapping people in cars and a restaurant, covering vehicles in mud, and sweeping two women to their deaths, authorities said.

Dramatic rescues unfolded as a foot (30 centimeters) of rain fell on some parts of western Connecticut late Sunday and early Monday, coming down so fast that it caught drivers unaware. Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont said more than 100 people were evacuated by search and rescue teams Sunday evening. The bodies of two women who had been in separate cars were recovered Monday in Oxford, a town of 13,000 about 35 miles southwest of Hartford, officials said. Both were Oxford residents.

Firefighters were trying to get the first woman to safety when the flooded Little River swept her away, Oxford Fire Chief Scott Pelletier said at a news conference with other Connecticut officials. The second woman got out of her car and tried to cling to a sign, but “the racing water was too much” and swept her away, too, he said.

Officials in Connecticut say two women died after being swept away by floodwaters brought by torrential rains that fell there and on New York's Long Island.

CT DOT CONSTRUCTION ADVISORY
Signing and Pavement Marking Installations at Unsignalized Intersections in Eastern Connecticut

8/19/2024

The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) is announcing that signing and pavement marking installation at unsignalized municipal road intersections will be performed in the towns of Brooklyn, Killingly, Mansfield, Marlborough, Montville, New London, Old Saybrook, Waterford and Windham starting fall 2024

The purpose of this project is to implement signing and pavement marking improvements at unsignalized municipally owned and maintained intersections as needed to improve compliance and visibility.

This project will replace existing stop signs, approximately 50 feet of double yellow pavement markings and stop bars as well as introduce oversized stop signs, stop ahead and intersection ahead warning signs in accordance with latest standards. The systemic application has proven safety countermeasures at higher crash-risk, stop-controlled intersections and it aims to lower the potential of future crashes. Approximately 50 intersections in Eastern Connecticut have been identified by CTDOT that will benefit from the enhanced signing and pavement marking improvements.

CT DOT Project No. 0172-0521 was awarded to Discount Fence of Connecticut, LLC at a cost of $524,314.30 on August 12, 2024, and is scheduled to be completed October 30, 2025. This project is administered by the Bureau of Engineering and Construction, Office of Construction, District 2 in Norwich.

LANE CLOSURE/DETOUR INFO

There will be periodic lane closures between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. Monday through Friday. There will also be periodic lane closures Saturday and Sunday between 6:00 p.m. and 10:00 a.m. Traffic control signing will guide motorists through the work zone.

Motorists should be aware that modifications or extensions to this schedule may become necessary due to weather delays or other unforeseen conditions. Motorists are advised to maintain a safe speed when driving in this area.

CT officials say it will be ‘a long recovery’ from weekend flooding

by Andrew Brown/CT Mirror
August 19, 2024

Connecticut officials said several small towns were severely damaged by torrential rains that hit the southwestern part of the state on Sunday, swamping homes, overtaking roadways and killing two people who were swept away by a raging torrent of water.

Gov. Ned Lamont and members of his administration said the floodwaters were receding on Monday, but the damage caused by the downpours that lasted for more than a day, they said, could take weeks or months to fully recover from.

Hundreds of state employees were busy Monday assessing the region’s public and private dams, providing support to local emergency management officials and inspecting state roadways, 27 of which were closed due to undercut pavement or damaged bridges.

“It’s going to be a long recovery,” said Garrett Eucalitto, the commissioner of the state Department of Transportation.

The region around Newtown, Seymour and Middlebury received up to 10 inches of rain over a 24 hour period, according to rainfall totals from the National Weather Service.

CONNECTICUT FLOOD VICTIMS I'Dd
Two women are dead after what town officials call “historic, unprecedented flooding” in Oxford on Sunday.

State police have identified the women as 65-year-old Ethelyn Joiner and 71 Audrey Rostkowski, both of Oxford.

Oxford Fire Chief Scott Pelletier said firefighters responded to get one of the women out of a vehicle when the car shifted in the flooding and she fell and was swept into the floodwater.

One firefighter who tried to help her fell as well and then another firefighter trying to help them went down.Other firefighters then acted to help with the rescue and one is being treated for minor injuries.

The other woman was in a vehicle, climbed out, tried to cross the water and made it to a sign, which she was hanging onto it. Firefighters tried to get to her, but she was swept away in rising waters, Pelletier said.
