Russian President Vladimir Putin confirmed Friday he is running for another six-year term, one day after lawmakers in Russia's upper house of parliament set the date for the next presidential election for March 17, 2024.

Putin made the announcement on Russian state television following a ceremony at the Kremlin for military personnel.

During a conversation with military officer Lieutenant Colonel Artyom Zhoga, Putin said that he "had different thoughts at different times, but this is a time when a decision has to be made," and said he was running for president.

The state-run news agency quoted the officer as confirming what the president had said.

The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ola Olukoyede, has vowed to tackle looters of public funds, drainers of resources and other corrupt elements in Nigeria in order to make room for growth and development across the country.

According to a statement and photos shared on the agency's official X handle, the Chairman stated this on Saturday, December 9, in Abuja during a road walk held in commemoration of the 2023 International Anti-Corruption Day, themed 'Uniting the World against Corruption'.

Olukoyede was quoted as saying that the EFCC under his watch would not allow resources meant for economic growth and greater good of Nigerians to be cornered by looters and that every stolen fund would be recovered to develop social systems in the country.

He further promised that the anti-corruption mandate of the EFCC is being refocused to stimulate growth and development in all the sectors of the economy.

He said, “We are going to give sleepless nights to those stealing our money. We are going to remove opportunities for corruption. We are going to plug the loopholes. We are in the era of a new budget. We have sent words to all the gate-keepers of our finances in Nigeria that we are going to work with them. Every money that is released, we are going to track them.

“We are refocusing the anti-corruption mandate of the EFCC. We will fight corruption to stimulate growth and development and remove all the threats to the progress of the nation. We are tired of corruption in Nigeria. Our youths must have job opportunities."

On the theme of the 2023 International Anti-Corruption Day, Olukoyede stated that the whole world must come together to fight corruption and expressed readiness to approach the international community for the recovery of stolen funds kept abroad.

He said, “Those who are keeping looted funds abroad are more corrupt than us. We are going to go after them. We will recover our funds and use them to develop our systems."

The statement further read that the road walk was held in all the fourteen zonal commands of the EFCC, as the one by the Abuja Zonal Command in Wuse district witnessed massive turn out of Nigerians, including staff of the EFCC, civil society organisations, representatives of the Nigerian Labour Congress, Police, Armed Forces, National Youth Service Corps, women groups, media and other stakeholders.

Nigerian Politicians Are Destroying Our Young Girls (By Sam Amadi)

Terrible things happen in Nigeria. We have lost the present and we want to lose the future.

I just left Transcorp Hotel Abuja after my news analysis at Arise News TV. As I stepped to the lobby of the hotel, I saw a bevy of pretty young girls in their early 20s crowded in a corner. There were all skimpily dressed as if there were commercial s*x workers. The time was 10.30pm.

One of them rushed to greet me. “Good evening sir”. She was one of my students. I recognized her clearly because she had a slight disability and I paid attention to make sure she followed the coursework. I was shocked. I recognized three of those hotly dressed pretty young girls as fresh graduates of my department.

What are they all coming to do at this kind of Hotel at this hour and dressed in this manner? Of course, I think I know what it is. A Nigerian politician or man of means have arranged them for his pleasure and those of his friends and acquaintances. Everyday, our girls are disoriented by these politicians who have neither shame nor conscience because they have access to power and money.

We pride ourselves that we have a large youth population and that is a huge asset. But the truth is that we have a large hardware. The software is highly corrupted. Why do we intend to organize these adolescents into the life of immorality?

This reminds me of the experience I had as a special adviser to senate president. Once we went to open a new government house built by a Governor in one of the southeast states. The Governor arranged a special reception for us. When we got to the venue of the so-called reception, I wa shocked. Tens of very young girls sourced from the nearby university – between 17-22 years- were already dancing with top government officials.

I screamed and accosted the majority leader of the State House of Assembly. He boldly answered “Man Sammy, these adolescents are our counterparts”. Wow. What? I requested to be taken back to the hotel. That was the end of the reception for me. I couldn’t believe that someone will arrange first year students for an entourage that has the Senate President and the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Education. We are finished.

These politicians have done more harms than you can imagine.

They have destroyed the economy. They have destroyed infrastructure.

They have also destroyed the morality and the viability of our human capital.

How can such young girls who are debased that early rise up to be moral champions of tomorrow? How? Pretty difficult.’

MAN AND TRENDING LIST: "Fear Women", Says Francis, Man Who Shared 'Body Count' List 🫣😁

"I invited a babe I was dating to a wedding and she agreed . The night before the wedding she contacted me that she was having cramps from her period and will be unable to attend and I sympathized with her and said may be next time .

"I went to the wedding alone and voila I was seated next to the lady with crams who is seated with another man and were cozy . I sat next to her with ‘decorum’ until she slipped a note into my hand to meet her by the restroom area for her to explain what happened . I should go and use the restroom 5 minutes after she goes there and she will be waiting at the restroom hallway . Fear women!"

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority has dislodged tricyclists, popular known as Keke drivers, at Anifowoshe street, Ikeja.

This comes after a complaint from a resident in the area who accused the Keke drivers of defacing the street.

Commenting on an X post by the Commissioner of Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, an X user, identified as MoSimple raised the alarm on the issue.

She wrote, "Dear Commissioner, thank you for the good job you are doing. Keke NAPEP drivers have turned my street at Anifowoshe, Ikeja into a mechanic village.

"They deface the street and part indiscriminately and insult anyone who complains. I have sent messages to the designated WhatsApp."

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Sola Giwa, responded to the comment, adding that measures will be taken.

In an X post on Saturday, Giwa noted that he had directed LASTMA officials to dislodge the Keke drivers.

Sharing photos from the exercise, he wrote, "Upon my directive, personnel of have dislodged the erring tricyclists and restored normalcy on her street.

A Bauchi State health care worker, Rhoda Jatau, has regained her freedom after spending a harrowing 18 months in incarceration for condemning the killing of Samuel Deborah in Sokoto State.

Jatau was released on bail on Friday following interventions by human rights activists, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), the Nigeria Inter-Religious Council and the Christian Solidarity Worldwide Nigeria.

“We are pleased to report that Mrs Rhoda has been granted bail and subsequently released from detention today. We have high hopes that the case will end in praise. Let’s continue to uphold her in our prayers. The leadership of NIREC played a key role. Praise be to our God”, an official confirmed on Friday.

SaharaReporters had in November reported that Jatau was arrested by the operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) in May 2022 after she shared a video that condemned the lynching of the Christian female student of Sokoto College, Deborah Samuel, accused of blasphemy by Islamic fanatics in Sokoto.
Jatau had faced charges of inciting public disturbance, “exciting contempt of religious creed,” and cyberstalking.

The prosecution had since closed its case but the defence’s attempt to present its no-case argument was repeatedly stalled as the presiding judge defers court dates and the trial experiences a prolonged timeline. The submission was eventually made on October 16 at a hearing witnessed by Jatau’s husband, Ya’u Adamu, and other observers.

The court had earlier admitted the interpretation of Jatau sharing of a social media video as offensive to extant laws and her lawyers would now work to prove that her action was justified rather than the initial stance that her action did not constitute the offences alleged.

Her arrest and prolonged detention had raised international concerns with the United Nations and organisations such as Christian Solidarity International expressing worry. They had contended that Jatau’s incarceration represents an infringement on her fundamental rights to freedom of expression, religion or belief.

Of concern is the repeated denial of bail to Jatau. The United Nations and CSI underscore that the denial of bail not only restricts her freedom but also raises questions about the fairness and proportionality of the legal measures taken against her.

Deborah, a 200-level student of Shehu Shagari College of Education, Sokoto, was brutally murdered after advising against sending religious materials on a WhatsApp page.

Lagos, December 5, 2023 – Pernod Ricard, a distinguished global leader in wines and spirits, marks the launch of its "Safe Roads" campaign with a pivotal visit to the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC). This initiative underscores Pernod Ricard's enduring commitment to cultivating a culture of responsible drinking and fortifying road safety measures, extending well beyond the festive season.

During the visit, Sola Oke, the Managing Director of Pernod Ricard in Nigeria, emphasized the imperative of collaboration with the FRSC to foster customer awareness regarding responsible drinking and the perils associated with alcohol misuse. Oke stated, "Our aim is to ensure people enjoy and celebrate responsibly all through the year but most specifically during this period. Our focus on commercial drivers is paramount due to the lives entrusted in their hands. With your invaluable support, our ongoing sensitization efforts strive to deter drink-driving. To date, we've sensitized through education over 3,000 commercial drivers."

The "Safe Roads" campaign, initiated in 2021 in Nigeria, aligns with Pernod Ricard's responsible hosting pillar within its Sustainability and Responsibility roadmap, in harmony with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3 – ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being for all.
Pernod Ricard's outreach spans various motor parks, airwaves, and communities, conducting compelling campaigns every Easter and December, extending critical messages about the dangers of alcohol misuse but ensure responsible drinking.
Hosting the executives of Pernod Ricard Nigeria, Babatunde O. Farinloye, the Sector Commander FRSC Lagos State, expressed gratitude for the broader outreach facilitated by Pernod Ricard in conveying vital messages. He reiterated the necessity for responsible drinking, stating, "Your involvement is instrumental in our collective efforts.

We advocate for a Nigerian road safety vision where accidents, even if they occur, do not claim lives. Your visit today resonates with our emphasis on responsible drinking. One of the leading causes of road accidents, apart from speeding, is driving under the influence."

Dolapo Onasanya, Human Resources Director at Pernod Ricard Nigeria, highlighted, "Our courtesy visit to the FRSC epitomizes Pernod Ricard Nigeria's unwavering commitment to societal welfare. We eagerly anticipate sustained collaboration with the government and stakeholders to significantly foster a culture of moderation and safer celebrations."

The visit culminated in the donation of 100 reflective jackets and ten traffic stands by the Pernod Ricard team to the FRSC, reaffirming the company's steadfast dedication to social responsibility and its proactive role in nurturing a safer and more conscientious driving culture in Nigeria.

Previous editions of the 'Safe Roads' campaign garnered substantial support from various government bodies, including the Federal Road Safety Corp (FRSC), Lagos State Ministry of Transportation, Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), and Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC). The campaign was lauded for curtailing irresponsible drinking among public transport drivers preceding the Christmas celebrations in 2021 and 2022.

This year's campaign will encompass amongst others, a radio campaign featuring lively jingles tailored for commercial drivers across Lagos, Ibadan, and Port Harcourt, advocating responsible drinking and ensuring safer roads throughout the festive season.

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) have arrested two special constables who were caught demanding money from a Dutch rider in Oyo state.

In a less than two-minute viral video, the officers flagged down the female rider along the Iseyin-Ogbomosho road in Oyo and asked where she was headed.

The Dutch rider responded by saying she was from the Netherlands and that she was heading to Abuja, the country’s capital city.

The special constables asked the rider to offer them money or anything in her possession.

“Give me something nah. How is family? Wetin you bring come? Wetin you wan give me?” the officers asked the foreigner.

The response from the Dutch rider showed that she did not understand what the officers were requesting for in Pidgin English.

To clarify what they said, the officers said: “Give me money” and the Dutch rider responded with: “Why?”.

In a statement on Friday, Muyiwa Adejobi, force spokesperson, said Adebola Hamzat, Oyo police spokesperson, has instituted a disciplinary procedure against the special constables.

“The police authority has condemned the act and ordered that the men and their supervising divisional police officer be sanctioned accordingly,” Adejobi said.

“Such an act is unpolice and would never be tolerated in any manner.”

Special constables are persons who volunteer to join the NPF on a part-time basis.

The purpose of the special constabulary is for community policing. Special constables wear uniforms similar to those of conventional police officers.

Broadcasting company Multichoice has jacked up the prices of its offerings in Nigeria days after announcing a $72m loss in its financial statement for the third quarter of the year.

Checks on the company’s reviewed price list showed a 20 per cent per cent hike in the company’s packages across the board.

With the latest price hike, the DStv Premium package increased by 20.4 per cent from N24,500 to N29,500. Similarly, the DStv Compact+ has gone up by 19.2 per cent from N16,600 to N19,800 while the Compact package increased by 19 per cent, from N10,500 to N12,500.

The Comfam package moved up by 19.2 per cent from N6,200 to N7,400. The latest hike made it the second time the company would implement an upward review of prices within a six-month period.

In May, Multichoice had jacked up the prices of its offerings. During this round of price hikes, the DStv Premium package increased by 16.7 per cent (N3,500) from N21,000 to N24,500.

Similarly, the DStv Compact+ package had gone up by 16.5 per cent (N2,350) from N14,250 to N16,600. The DStv Compact package also rose by 16.7 per cent from N9,000 to N10,500. The DStv Confam package, previously priced at N5,300, went up by 17 per cent to N6,200.

Confirming the latest hike to The PUNCH, a spokesperson in the company who preferred to speak anonymously blamed the harsh business environment for the hike.

According to the source, the company had to grapple with the devastating consequences of the continued devaluation of the naira, alongside a vast array of challenges including taxation, logistics, among others.

The source said, “Yes. We have increased our rates. We buy content in dollars but earn in naira. If we take off a channel or stop acquiring content that our customers are used to, we will be slammed.

“We buy diesel. We pay taxes. Even before this year, with the dollar and fuel subsidy removal. We pay billions in licensing fees. We operate several offices. We have to pay staff.”

The latest hike comes after Multichoice reported a third consecutive semi-annual loss, attributing its financial challenges to foreign exchange difficulties in Nigeria and persistent power outages in South Africa.
