Sitting with Don Was is a comfortable and unhurried exercise. He may seem slightly reserved at first, but ideas and insights pour with intensity once he’s in gear. He’s an easy laugh, too. In the closing weeks of last summer, in a…

Absolutely, some of the best jazz ever!

The 1950s saw the release of some of the greatest albums, of any genre, ever made. If you've never heard any of these albums and are wondering where to start, you could do a lot worse than by starting at the top, with Kind of Blue, and working your way down the list

If Matt Wilson's in, so am I!

Drummer Matt Wilson presents his joyous trio project ‘Christmas Tree-O’ on December 8th celebrating the holiday season in our Joe Henderson Lab! “An ambassador of good feeling” (New York Times). Wilson is one of the most in-demand musicians in jazz with five consecutive DownBeat Critics Poll Rising Star nods and a Best New Artist award from the New York Jazz Critics Circle, his resume includes stints with Joe Lovano, Lee Konitz, John Scofield, Charlie Haden, Denny Zeitlin, Jane Ira Bloom and dozens more.

He’s recorded a dozen albums under his own names and leads a number of stimulating ensembles including the Matt Wilson Quartet, Arts & Crafts, Trio M, and this decidedly joyous trio project assembled to celebrate the holiday season, Matt Wilson’s Christmas Tree-O. Beyond his formidable instrumental acuity, Matt Wilson’s greatest gift is his knack for invention and the unbridled sense of fun he brings to the bandstand – a perfect combination for the holiday season.

Carla Bley 1936-2023

Our good friend Carla Bley has died, aged 87, after a long illness. One of jazz’s great composers, she was a stubborn and witty individualist who heard and wrote and played things differently. “She works in many forms,” critic Nat Hentoff noted, “and her scores for big jazz bands are matched only by those of Duke Ellington and Charles Mingus for yearning lyricism, explosive exultation and other expressions of the human condition.” The large ensembles, remarkable as they were, were but part of the story....
