💡New in Early View

This new paper draws on ethnographic research in kibbutzim which are part of Israel's high-tech scene. In these sites, the authors observe not just the imitation of ‘urban’ innovation, but also the strong influence of the community and the contribution of local knowledge in the design of technologically innovative products and services.

📢 New in Early View

In this new archaeology paper, Gavin Lucas unpacks the concept of survival to show the persistence of the past in the present.

By drawing on the distinctions between survival and related terms of relics, persistent practices, and revivals, this article proposes a reappraisal of the concept of survival and its relevance to contemporary anthropology and archaeology alike.

🎉New in Early View

Olga Fedorenko critically explores the idea of the sharing economy using her fieldwork with Open Closet, a non-profit startup in South Korea.

The article tracks how sharing at Open Closet is realized via circulations of suits, letters, and ‘warm hearts’, and how its meanings and obligations are interpreted via the historical relations of mutual responsibility within local collectivities of belonging.

💡New article available in Early View

James Carrier considers the increasing invisibility of economic transactions in everyday life. Drawing on a range of historical examples, the paper argues that the declining visibility of economic networks encouraged the development of the idea of the economy as a distinct realm.

Call for Panels Deadline: 13 October 2023
for our Face-to-Face conference:

𝗔𝗡𝗧𝗛𝗥𝗢𝗣𝗢𝗟𝗢𝗚𝗬 𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗘𝗗𝗨𝗖𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡
25–28 June 2024 at Senate House, University of London

There will be distinct strands which we invite delegates to explore. However, panel proposals are also invited on any topic that may be found of interest.

One of the strands is:

◾ Academic Teaching and Truth

University teaching can be nothing without freedom of expression. Yet, from various parts of the world there appears to be increasing intolerance of a plurality of views. How can we as anthropologists contribute toward maintaining the integrity of our Higher Education institutions, wherever they may be found? Panel proposals are particularly invited that give instances of these potential problems, from whatever location.

James Rose reflects on how forensic & social anthropology can help provide justice to those who were denied justice during their lives.

Drawing on his work in Australia, he dwells on how anthropological evidence can be used in courts to address marginalisation in cases from systematic land expropriation to unlawful detention.
