This year's municipal meet main event battle of the men's volleyball category ignites tension as Daniel Maramba National High School (DMNHS) upsets Maticmatic National High School (MNHS) in a 3-set thriller at Banaoang Central School, on friday, (25-21, 23-25, 23-25).
DMNHS came up strong with as much as a 3-point lead against MNHS but was then chased by MNHS' senior, Berniel Abarientos, and Tom John Ventayen, who both contributed to an 8-2 run ensued by unforced errors of DMNHS, resulting in a 25-21 end.
Meanwhile, the second set remains in a viable position as MNHS pulls a 4-0 run, but DMNHS immediately took advantage of an unforced error and heaved a 9-3 run of their own.
The tension began to rise as DMNHS middle blockers Cleve Jasmin and Cedrick Macanlalay went on to close down MNHS' team captain, John Paul Gabejan, and Johnrey Buscas, resulting in another 3 consecutive unforced errors by MNHS.
In addition, the other 4-1 run led by DMNHS was halted due to a wrong call of the second referee, who called an antenna touch but was altered by the first referee, resulting in a deadball.
Down the stretch, another miscall against MNHS was called, and a referee ruled a ball touch, opposing the first referee's decision, meeting the ire of the MNHS crowd.
Moreover, after the controversial ruling, Gabejan was called by the first referee and was told to calm his teammates outside who're irate; the call caused MNHS to commit 3 consecutive unforced errors, tying the match with one set apiece.
Meanwhile, unscouted players Jasmin and Mark Taluban left MNHS' offense at a hard time as they denied multiple attempts by Gabejan and Ventayen with a 5-0 block count raised by DMNHS.
DMNHS sprint away from MNHS with a 6-point lead but are then chased by MNHS, who install a 7-1 run, tying the match at all 20 that extends to 23-23.
DMNHS went on to win the deciding set with the capacity crowd, causing high tension and pushing MNHS to commit back-to-back unforced errors to close down the match, 25-23.
Moreover, the leading scorer, Cervantes, earned 18 points built on 16 attacks, 1 ace, and 1 block, as followed by Abarientos with 17 points, John Paul Pasaoa with 13, and Ventayen with 11 points.
Cervantes then gave his advice to the belittled ones, "Just always believe in your own abilities. Don't pay attention to those people who will lower your confidence, and always do your best when playing," he said.
Furthermore, the DMNHS men's volleyball team, along with victorious athletes from Sta. Barbara is set to return to the School Division Office 1 Pangasinan Athletics Association (SDO1-PAA) meet.
