MICHAEL CHAPMAN — Who’s This Yorkshire Guy? (Live in Brighton 2015) Ltd Edition Classic Black Vinyl

Rare unreleased live set from the late, great guitarist and singer songwriter who circumnavigated folk, jazz, country, blues and progressive rock’s nuances. Inspired by guitar stylist John Fahey, his impromptu performances were adored by everyone from Bowie and Elton John to Thurston Moore, Bill Callahan and Lucinda Williams. A favourite of Peel’s Perfumed Garden in the 70s, a contemporary of Bert Jansch and John Martyn, his gritty weathered vocals and infectious playing resulted in a cult revival where this intimate recording took place.

TREES — Fore & After (Ltd Edition Classic Black Double Vinyl)

Vinyl rarities release of original Trees’ demos and BBC sessions circa 1969/70, plus 2007 remixes of tracks from ‘On The Shore’ and 2018 live performances of ‘She Moved Thro’ The Fair’ and ‘Murdoch’. Trees helped define ‘Acid Folk’, creating a sub-category in the lexicon of record dealers and music critics alike.

This collection was compiled and overseen by Trees’ founder member David Costa.

Taken from his lost and ill-fated 1971 Broadway rock opera ‘SOON’… which featured a then unknown, up and coming actor named Richard Gere (see pic).

The production was canned after one performance, not before Scott himself was fired from his own project (!) for creative differences.

Will ‘SOON’ ever be heard the way Scott intended? Spoiler alert: yes. Stay tuned for more info...

HAPPY 50th BIRTHDAY BAGPUSS! 💓🙌💓🙌💓

Peter Firmin and Oliver Postgate’s remarkable cloth cat-based television programme was first broadcast on this day in 1974. A multigenerational favourite, not only were the stories much-loved but the songs were to become part of the cultural fabric too.

In 2018 we released The Music From Bagpuss on vinyl and CD, Stewart Lee described it as “an accidental classic of the folk-roots underground”… high, but justified, praise indeed for Sandra Kerr and John Faulkner’s fantastic compositions.

Revisiting Fagan’s mystical, mythical, and deeply soulful masterpiece, this psych-folk gem doffs a Tropicalia hat direct from downtown New York. Largely overlooked on its initial 1968 release through Atlantic Records-subsidiary, ATCO, ‘South Atlantic Blues’ inspired a lithograph artwork (entitled “Scott Fagan Record”) by pop artist Jasper Johns. Fagan also co-wrote and starred in the first rock musical to be produced on Broadway, 1971’s ‘Soon’ (based on his experiences in the music industry and co-starring a young Richard Gere), and was nearly the first artist signed to the Beatle’s Apple Records (they opted for James Taylor instead)

Described as “Full of psychedelic folk, Donovanish pop and stripped-down, brass-powered, redemptive soul” by The Guardian, South Atlantic Blues is an epic song cycle wrapped around an impassioned love story, driven by Fagan’s dense, allusive lyrics, experimental production by Elmer Jared Gordon and rich arrangements by Horace Ott (Nina Simone, Sam Cooke, The Shirelles)

Astonishingly 2024 marks the 10th anniversary of Earth Recordings’ existence as a record label. And in that time an absolute cornerstone of our catalog has been working with the Bert Jansch estate to reissue his remarkable canon of work. Including both studio LPs and rare live performances.
