The Initiative
The goal for this channel is to express the knowledge I accrued through my own hockey related life experiences and provide insight into my current personal initiatives.
I will be sharing the stories and lessons I learned through my hockey career, personal development techniques which I am continually exploring, and my current missions.
Hockey
I grew up playing hockey in the GTHL, where I won an OHL cup in my minor midget year and went on to be drafted by the London Knights in the first round of the 2012 OHL entry draft. Following the draft, my career took a sharp turn, as I underwent 6 surgeries on various knee and hip ailments which kept me sidelined for over a year. It was an extremely difficult recovery, but I made it back and continued to play 4 years in the OHL for the Knights, Ottawa 67’s and Guelph Storm. I also attended 2 NHL camps and played in the NHL/CHL Top Prospects Game. After my OHL career, I retired and started a new chapter in my life, attending Western University.
My initiative pertaining to hockey is to educate and inform the minor hockey world of the big picture! Hopefully, changing the emphasis from only achieving hockey related goals (such as playing in the NHL) to developing the amazing life skills which are offered through playing hockey competitively. I also wish to provide information which can help accelerate the development of young athletes and guide them towards winning on the ice and in life.
Personal Development
My turbulent hockey career forced me to become far more cognizant of my body and surroundings. I had to adopt strict practices just to be able to play, but, these practices have also had a profound positive impact on my life as a whole. Some of these practices include proper exercise habits, healthy diet, optimizing sleep, meditation and supplementation. Somewhat ironically, given that I am now retired, I have taken a much larger interest in personal development both mentally and physically. This is largely due to the fact that I have been introduced to an entire new world and am finding new passions which I work on intensely, with the goal in mind of mastering them. I look forward to providing insight into the new practices which I am reading about and experimenting with, that can hopefully benefit everyone!
Missions
I am an entrepreneur at heart and have already dove into that field with the creation of an international hockey development start-up company. I want to reach as many people as possible and help provide the players with the resources they need to accelerate their growth.
Mental health is a prominent focus in my life. I wish to eliminate some of the mental health stigmas in sport and provide awareness into the practices I used that helped me overcome my battle with mental health.
I am consistently investigating new and innovative ways to improve my own physical and mental health. Physically, I adopt a strict workout regimen where I train 5x a week and do some form of exercise every single day. Mentally, I meditate for 15 minutes every day, journal morning and night, and do weekly reviews where I rate my performance for the past week in 8 individual categories. I have yearlong objectives, but essentially, my true mission is to improve every single day by continually pushing myself to new heights.
Academically, I am striving towards attending the Ivey School of Business HBA program.
I hope this show can help you with the goal you are striving towards, and if not, I hope you at least find the episodes entertaining!
