Last Sunday was the International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Ge***al Mutilation (FGM) 2022. FGM is a procedure that alters the genitalia of a woman or girl for non-medical reasons. While religion is often used as an argument for the use of this practice, no religions actually prescribe FGM. People often accept the use of this practice, excusing it as a cultural tradition or as something that is needed for social acceptance. Pinkwashing is a form of performative activism, in which companies that contribute to causes of breast cancer use pink-themed marketing in October to promote breast cancer awareness. Bis*xual+ people make up over half of the LGBTQ+ community, but continue to be underrepresented, misunderstood, and stereotyped. While initially started to commemorate the inauguration of the UN Working Group on Indigenous Populations on August 9, 1982, this day is now meant to highlight the achievements and contributions of Indigenous people while simultaneously shedding light on the fight to protect their rights. This year's theme focuses on calling for a new social contract that is inclusive of Indigenous people and ensures that their opinions regarding land usage, governance and lifestyle are respected and heard, things that are important all the time.
