How Can We Focus On More Positive Things In Our Community
Local moms address National Issues that affect the Black Family
To see the world through the eyes of a Black child isn’t a view that mainstream media covers yet it is one that Black mothers are faced with every moment of each day. Two friends, Mel and Tash couldn’t find the ongoing space for a safe dialogue of Black motherhood, so they created one. Mahogany Momology is an introspective look on the positive roles played, as well as the issues and implications of African American motherhood. The weekly podcast hosts topics such as Black Families and Homeschooling, The Rise of Black Women and Gun Ownership and Raising Boys in the #MeToo Movement.
“We explore a variety of topics,” Mel stated. “Sometimes its topics that people don’t think about or realize.”
One could easily argue that Black mothers have always had to address motherhood with a unique set of societal concerns in the past, but with the rise in media coverage of racism and the killing of unarmed teens by law enforcement, unique topics continue to remain prevalent. Black motherhood topics aren’t usually the watercooler conversations employees embrace at work.
“The Black mom thought process with raising kids is constantly shifting,” added Tash. “We constantly have to think about how we raise our children in society and then we have to add that other aspect of being Black and how we make day to day decisions for our sons and daughters. We’re constantly shifting our mindset to make sure we survive.”
Listen to Mel and Tash on any of the popular podcast forums, such as Google Play, Spotify, iTunes, etc. Mahogany Moms can also be found on social media platforms, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
“I see podcasting as the rising alternative to radio. A lot of my friends listen to podcasting. Why not listen to podcast and feel like you’re listening to your girlfriend in the car?” questioned Tash.
“There are other mom podcasts that talk about issues, but its more about popular culture. Our podcast is timeless and can be listened to at any time over the year and can be shared a
