The Lills Travel Story - Chapter 1: Cheaha State Park, Alabama

After being displaced by Hurricane Matthew in 2016, the two of us decided to get in our old VW bus and drive West. We made no plans, other than to follow our hearts and enjoy the ride. It was a bit wild, because we only had $3,000 to our name, but we thought by being creative and keeping positive, we could make it to the West Coast. Little did we know, it would take us over a year to reach California. We didn't share our adventure on social media, other than documenting the destinations we visited and uploading them to our YouTube channel. We didn't want to distract ourselves from the experience or be continuously on the phone or checking accounts because we felt it would take away from the magical adventure. It was so nice to be in the now and present for everything that happened. Now, we're going back in time and sharing the journey. There were so many ups and downs, miracles, unexpected surprises and along the way, we transformed into different people with a different outlook on life. Our first stop on our adventure was at Cheaha State Park, where we were able to take a breath, bathe in the lake and enjoy nature, before getting back on the road. It was the highest point in Alabama and the perfect first stop on our cross-country trip. Our 1978 VW Bus Interior Makeover

In 2013, we scraped together our pennies and picked up our 1978 Volkswagen bus for $1,800 in Asheville, NC. While on our adventure, we came across a vintage 1961 GM bus in the New Mexico desert.
