Episode 1 in the Wildlife Series. Total War: Destroying the American Buffalo.
We discuss the story of the Buffalo in America and how these great herds known once as the "Thunder on the Plains" with a population numbering 30-60 million, were deliberately and rapidly destroyed as a tool in the war against the Native Americans, to a number of only around 300.

Buffalo Skulls, 1892 - The American Army, alongside military assisted hunters, rapidly and deliberately destroyed the Buffalo as a Scorched Earth tactic against the Native Americans, from 30-60mil animals to only 300 in 1884. LtCol. Dodge concisely put it as: “Every Buffalo Dead is an Indian Gone!”

No man did more to seal the fate of the American buffalo than General Sherman. Sherman was a celebrated veteran from the civil war, who learned some valuable lessons in the concept of Total War that he would later employ to solve the so called “Indian Problem”. His strategies relied on the belief that his Army “must make old and young, rich and poor, feel the hard hand of war”. While controlling the great plains, he witnessed how dependent the Native Americas were on the Buffalo for their physical and cultural subsistence.

The Army was left feeling frustrated as the Native Americans were far swifter with their nomadic way of living, meaning they could easily relocate during attacks. This meant that the Army, who were more bogged down with supplies, could never deal any fatal blows. The buffalo, of course, were a far more accessible target. This was exaggerated due to the nature of the animal as when one buffalo is killed, others rally around it for defence, meaning a party with guns and ammunition can slaughter hundreds of the beasts.

The Army themselves had been targeting Buffalo, but when a tannery in Pennsylvania learned how to convert buffalo hide into commercial leather, the hide hunters then targeted the animals in droves for their skin. Customarily, the animals would be killed for their tongues, hides and sometimes humps, while leaving the rest of the animal to rot on the plains.

The effect on the Native Americans cannot be overstated, and it paralyzed most of the tribes. As put by Crow Leader, Chief Plenty Coups: "When the buffalo went away the hearts of my people fell to the ground, and they could not lift them up again. After this nothing happened. There was little singing anywhere."

9000 year old Neolithic Spirit Masks, the World’s Oldest Masks (More info below)
These masks were unearthed in the Judean desert around Jerusalem and were sculpted by some of our earliest ancestors who decided to give up the hunter gatherer lifestyle to instead settle in the Judean hills, beginning a farming lifestyle.

It is thought that this change in existence sparked more organised religious beliefs and a worship of ancestors, prompting a necessity for artifacts such as these.

Numerous masks like these have been found in the region. Sometimes, they are found as a result of an archaeological excavation in areas with thousands of other objects. Things such as rope baskets, beads, shells, flint knives, bone figurines and decorated human skulls. Some of these stone masks even had hair attached as beards and moustaches.

In other cases though, these masks have been found by accident. One such case was an accidental discovery by a farmer who was tilling a field in the early 1970s. From there, they fell into the hands of an antique dealer. Sadly, after changing possession numerous times, the precise location of where the masks were found is unknown.

A baby Aardvark and the strange teeth of their order “Tubulidentata”. Aardvarks are the sole living member of their mammalian order which includes another 15 or so creatures. They evolved shortly after the extinction of the dinosaurs and are evidently named for their strange tube like teeth. (Learn more below)

Each tooth is made of thin, hexagonal, parallel tubes that have their own pulp canals. The teeth have no enamel coating and they grow constantly throughout their lives, being worn down by usage. They also only have teeth at the back of their jaws, which are molars. Oddly, baby Aardvarks grow regular mammalian Incisors and Canines at the front of the jaw that fall out during adolescence and never grow back.

The name Aardvark means “Earth Pig” in Afrikaans and they are commonly thought to be Anteaters due to their similar appearance and the fact that they can consume up to 50,000 ants a day. But in reality, they aren’t closely related to Anteaters at all, but share a close lineage with Elephants.

Aardvarks almost exclusively eat ants and termites, but they also eat a fruit that they share a symbiotic relationship with, known as the Aardvark Cucumber. The animal defecates the seeds near their burrows into the loose, rich soil allowing the seeds to grow much faster compared with normal soil. Also, the specific environment within the intestines of the animal increases the fertility, and thus the probability of the survival of the seeds.

In WW2, George de Hevesy dissolved the 2 gold Nobel Prizes of Laue and Franck to conceal them from the N***s. This liquid was left unnoticed on a shelf until after the war when Hevesy extracted the gold from the acid, which the Nobel Society then recast into medals for Laue and Franck (Info Below).

German Physicists Max Von Laue and James Franck were both strong objectors of N***sm and were renowned academics, leaving them vulnerable under the tyranny of the N**i Party. They had sent their gold Nobel prizes to scientist Niels Bohr at his institute in Copenhagen for safe keeping when the N**i’s were establishing power in their own country.

However, the sending of gold under The Third Reich was a capitol offence and when Denmark eventually came under the power of the Germans, the discovery of these medals would’ve resulted in the persecution of these two scientists who were already in danger. Thanks to de Hevesy’s skill as a chemist, the medals were concealed from the Germans and were returned to their rightful owners after the war.

A replica of the artificial nose worn by Astronomer Tycho Brahe. During an engagement party, he got into a drunken quarrel with a contemporary over who was the better mathematician. They resolved their feud with a sword duel in the dark, in which Brahe lost his nose.

Brahe was not your typical astronomer, with more bizarre anecdotes to his name than just the nose (made of brass or silver, and meticulously glued on with paste).

One of Brahe’s greatest companions was a man named Jeppe who had dwarfism. Brahe believed Jeppe to be psychic, and they would chat together at mealtimes with Jeppe sitting at the foot of Brahe, occasionally receiving morsels of food from the table.

Famously, Brahe also kept a fully grown Elk as a pet, that was known of among many of the nobles in Denmark, but this Elk met a sad end. When a nobleman, so intrigued by the idea of a tame deer, offered a trade for this animal, Brahe broke the news that it had recently died after drinking too much beer and falling down the stairs.

Regardless of Brahe’s personal life, he was an extremely meticulous astronomical observer attaining some of the most accurate results of the era. Although he didn’t specifically make any conclusions on Mars itself, he took on a young assistant by the name of Johannes Kepler. During Brahe’s lifetime, Kepler wasn’t able to see the full extent of the significance of the Mars data that Brahe had collected, as Brahe guarded his results extremely jealousy. But after his death, Kepler used this data to conclude that orbits are not circular like Copernicus had once thought, but in fact elliptical, thus creating the laws for planetary motion.
