The passing of Gene Gunulfsen leaves an irreplaceable void. Gene carried a positive spirit into every situation. I never knew him to speak negatively about anyone.

I met him in the late 1990's at a benefit concert with the unrealized goal of restoring the auditorium at the closed, deteriorating Ben's Ford school near Crossroads, MS. He was leading the band accompanying several participating artists. I immediately recognized his talents as a great vocalist with versatile musical instincts. That was the beginning of a close, enduring friendship and creative working relationship. He participated in multiple Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown recording projects over the years up to 'Gate's' death in 2005.

I fondly remember being his guest at all the New Orleans Saints home games in 2009. He won a raffle for two tickets that year. It turned out to be the magical season that led to their 2010 Super Bowl win.

Gene sang at the funerals of the legendary Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown and renown songwriter/recording artist Bobby Charles. His voice and positive spirit will be greatly missed.

I have a little for y’all on this chilly Christmas Eve. This is a picture of Gatemouth, Dr. John & me (Jim Bateman). We were at Piety Studio in New Orleans during a Dr. John recording session where Gate was a guest artist. Hope everyone has a healthy & happy holiday season.

I recently learned that Gregg Allman's iconic touring group from 1974, includimg multi-instrumemtalist Randall Bramblet, has reformed as " Gregg Allmam's Laid Back Legacy." Gregg shared the stage with Clarence 'Gatemouth' Brown, Susan Tedeschi, and Dan Matrazzo along with 'Gate's Express' in tribute to 'Gate' before a full house in Atlanta after 'Gate's diagnosis with cancer--one of 'Gatemouth's" final shows. I will never forget Gregg's kindness, and unsurpassed talent. He made the tribute something very special to 'Gate,' and me. Also, Randall Bramlett is participating on a current project I am involved in recording his stepson Isaac Bramlett, son of the renowned New Orleans designer and folk art master Bob Shaffer (Dr. Bob). Isaac is a uniquely talented vocalist and interpreter of Randall's songs. God willing, he has a great future. His talent has been recognized by members of ''Widespread Panic'' among other well known musicians who have encouraged him and participated in his live performances and recordings. We are currently in the process of completing Isaac's debut full length album at Bogalusa's Studio In The Country. I am glad to hear of the tribute band--"Gergg Allman's Laid Back Legacy," and look forward to hearimg them perform at my earliest opportunity!

King has sold more than 10 million records in the United States. He is featured playing the part of Tommy Johnson in the Coen brothers' 2000 film O Brother, Where Art Thou?.
