Mister Cee. (sigh). Heard about his passing minutes after the news dropped. I had to sit back, pause, and think about what to say as all of the memories came back in moments of sadness. I’m honored to have graced the airwaves with Mister Cee. Hot 97. Middays. 10a-2p. I’d fill in for Hot’s midday queen at the time, . 12p was Cee’s spot. “The Throwback at Noon.” The necessary lunchtime mix to push us through the workday. Cee was easy to rock the mic with. His always upbeat energy knew how to play the perfect song, say what he needed, throw the break back to me to hit the post (without a word hitting any of the lyrics), and get to the next track with ease. Cee was one of a few DJs who consistently did this well - hit the post. A dynamic, energetic, musical genius on air, off the mic, Cee’s energy was always warm. Nice. Professional. Friendly.
I remember one morning, back when I was splitting duties between Hot and as the entertainment reporter on the Kiss FM morning show, I showed him the flyer for an after-work party I hosted in the city at Katra. It was my first official NYC hosted radio event. A Ladies Night. I’d booked the venue, promoted it on and off-air. Online. Everywhere. And then I made flyers. But the design for one of the parties was plain wack. I could feel it. Cee was in early one morning, prepping for his afternoon mix. I stopped him in the hallway outside of the morning show office and was like, “What do you think of this flyer? Tell the truth.” Cee took one look and cracked up. 😂 I waved my hands in the air, “See! I knew it was wack!” But Cee, the forever nice guy he was, tried to stop laughing, His cheese turned to a grin and he went, “Nah, it’s cool. It’s cool. It’s not that bad.” LOL Yes, it was. He was just being Mr. Nice Guy, Mister Cee. Calm. Courteous. Classic with the mixes. And forever moving with pleasant, warm vibrations that I always appreciated and will never forget. RIP to The Finisher.
