All Peace Is Local

What do we need to do if it's in our national interest to help and what happens if we don’t?
Mines has written extensively on post-conflict stabilization, measures short of war, and the roots of civil conflict. His book, “Why Nation Building Matters: Political Consolidation, Building Security Forces, and Economic Development in Failed and Fragile States” is due out in August 2020 by the University of Nebraska Press. Mr. Mines has a bachelor’s in history from Brigham Young University and a master’s in foreign service from Georgetown University.

Pedro Pan
Start your week off right with the American Diplomat - Real Stories Behind The News podcast.
Pedro Pan and the Guerrillas podcast episode.
We're talking to Phil Chicola, who served 33-years as a Foreign Service Officer all over the globe. Guatemala, El Salvador, Chile, Croatia, Brazil and Vancouver as Consul General.
There are two things we want to talk to Phil about. First, Pedro Pan - Peter Pan in Spanish. What was it and why was it important?
Second, the year 1999. Pete sends Phil on a secret mission to talk to the Colombian revolutionary guerrillas (FARC). What happened?
Full disclosure, Phil and Pete have known each other for 40 years. They've been through some tough times together and some fun times too. Were going to talk about both.

Rohingya Genocide
We're talking to Ambassador Shari Villarosa who was Chargé in Myanmar, formerly known as Burma, from 2005 to 2008. She's going to help us understand what it was like in that country, which she has described more than once as surreal and she's going to help us understand the Rohingya people, which is a marginalized and small ethnic group in a corner of Myanmar that has been persecuted. Some call it a genocide. Who do we in the West imagine might have prevented that from happening? Aung Sun Suu Kyi, the Nobel Peace Prize winner whom the West pinned a lot of hopes on, But she basically presided over or what many are calling genocide.
