Kiribati is a country of 110,000 people that sits at just 3 meters above sea level. Due to rising sea levels and increasingly intense weather patterns as a result of climate change, climate scientists have projected the entire country will be under water in as little as 30 to 50 years; the Kiribati people will become some of the worlds first climate refugees. This project shares intimate stories o

f life in Kiribati to acquaint the world with this vibrant community and promote mutual understanding as the Kiribati people will soon be forced to leave their country and become our neighbors.

“we must regain the conviction that we need one another, that we have a shared responsibility for others and the world, and that being good and decent are worth it.”

- Pope Francis (2015) Laudato Si’: On Care for Our Common Home

This project is made possible by generous funding from the Fulbright Foundation.
