"Between the Covers" Literacy Team Toni S. Walters PhD, Vivian Johnson PhD & Jonella Mongo PhD research children’s literature that reflects the lives of African-American children & families

Since 1970, the National Black Child Development Institute (NBCDI) has remained steadfast in its mission –“To improve and advance the lives of black children." For more than a decade, Dr. Toni Walters, emerita Oakland University, Rochester, MI; Dr. Vivian Johnson, Associate Professor in Reading & Literacy Learning, Marygrove College and Dr. Jonella Mongo, Educational Consultant and Literacy Adjunc

t at Marygrove College-embraced the NBCDI mission and started researching children’s literature that reflected the lives of African American children and families. We began publishing a column “Between the Covers” to highlight current literature that features African American children, birth to adolescence. Currently, Child Health is published quarterly and the BTC team presents at each NBCDI’s national convention. The team also mentors graduate students and prepares them to write, publish and also present at the National conferences.
