Great to be back at KMTV - this time for their Film Club with Chris Deacy ; talking about a range of different Environmental Documentaries

What I found interesting about discussing this specific genre - which can often be hard hitting and not always 'enjoyable' to watch (although of course important and impactful) - is the different techniques and approaches the directors used to try and educate and inspire the audience

Storytelling is a hugely powerful tool to move people - yet all of the 4 films we reviewed did this in very different ways - with greater or lesser results

However there is always the arguement that most likely only a certain group of self-selecting people will choose to watch an environment documentary ...so is there a risk of preaching to the converted at times?

By contrast, how to we engage the wider general public with important messages (not exclusively about climate change but in general) - without making them feel like they are being lectured at, scared and shocked into paralysis, or simply it not being enjoyable enough for them to choose to watch in the first place?!

A fascinating topic - and the intervirw will broadcast later this week

Excited to see my article from the recent Zero Waste Tunisia trip for TUI Care Foundation go out in the latest issue of Globetrotter Television Magazine ...

Love the work these guys are doing bringing education, cultural preservation, and environmental protection and sustainability to communities around the world

Shout out again to the amazing Dar Ben-Gacem and Indinya projects I was lucky enough to meet on this Tunisia trip

Meet Simone - a passionate solving and challenges

Personally I find that it's the people who are most inspiring when I visit initiatives

And it's this passionate mentality which I think is crucial in the space ...as we dealing with (relatively) brand new challenges - so we need to be willing to trial and error and embrace failure if we want to create the we need now more than ever

I also was to give a big shout-out to Simone for doing this interview in English - not his native language (and we all know how tough it can be the share our ideas ....now just imagine doing it in another language!!) So BIG respect Simone 🙏🙌🥳🏅

It was a pleasure to visit the Indinya workshop as part of the TUI Care Foundation Destination Zero Waste programme, on behalf of Globetrotter Television

It's passionate people like this who ultimately make BIG change happen in their community!

It was such a pleasure and inspiration to meet the badass social entrepreneur Leila - who runs the Dar Ben-Gacem boutique hotel

My 'why' has always been about helping people share their ideas, and as a result make the positive changes they want to see in the world.
..but someone like Leila really doesn't need any help!!...she's blazing a way for business to be a force for good in TUNISIA (where currently social enterprises and cooperatives aren't currently recognized as legal entities...but that's not stopped her!)

At times in the past Ive felt embarrassed to express the full extent of my passion for the things im excitement about (and I've spoken to many who feel the similar)...

[What is this all about hey? Is it a hangover from school where we want to fit in? And being really into something friends aren't makes you weird? Or is it because, as per recent discussed - that often sharing our hopes and dreams is more scary and vulnerable than sharing our challenges??]
..But Leila reminded me that being unashamedly excited, passionate, and optimistic that change can and is happening is a gift and strength, and is a joy and contagious to be around

And this is just Day 1 of the Destination Zero Waste Tunisia with TUI Care Foundation for Globetrotter Television - so I can wait to see what (and who!) is in store for the rest of the trip!! 😎🤗

A Vs A ?!?....

I couldn't let pass without resharing the highlights from the 'Handlebars Vs Cars' project!! 😂

This was a challenge campaign Ashford Borough Council set me last year...
. in which I raced a British Rallycross Driver Tristan Ovenden - in a brand new car - across Ashford during morning rush hour
.. me on a run of the bill basic city bike!! And all live streamed online, thanks to the help of MMS 360 MEDIA

This was such a fun campaign to work on, and i loved how, by taking a 'Top Gear style' approach, we were able to make behaviour change messages far more engaging and exciting for social media audiences

Big shout-out to Claire Norman and walker for ABC for being so up for doing something different, dynamic and fun.

It's Bike Week! So I'm excited to share recent collaboration with Kent County Council Active Travel, Kent Cycle Training, Kent Connected and Explore Kent

Every time I work on a cycling campaign I'm reminded how ridiculously multi beneficial cycling is!!
..and when you add in the benefits of an electric bike (you should have heard the "wwooooooooo" sound l made when I first hit the electric assist button!!)
..which also equals not having to arrive at work all sweaty and red!!
..it's a pleasure to then support them in helping more people gain the confidence and skills through their adult cycle training.

And what's nice about the electric bike option, is it can help you feel more confident cycling on the road, as you have that extra power when needed to get yourself through junctions and out of any situations you feel uncomfortable

KCC Kent Cycle Training are currently offering a massive 50% discount on their adult training courses (both electric and normal bike) via the code/link at the end of the video

Would love your thoughts and experiences please...

What is missing in the Sustainablilty space to enable;

- a) Eco Projects/Champions to be able to effectively spotlight their solutions? (At every level; grassroots community, startup and SMEs)

- b) What do the general public need to engage with events/initiatives/discussions (both those already 'engaged' and those who are interested but 'on the edge'/unsure)

I ask because I'm exploring what Version 2.0 of the Sustainable Futures Forum looks like - based in what is needed and what people want

My initial thoughts are;

-1) instead of one big event, a series of smaller events (to increase both accessibility and long term relationship development) - focused on discussion/sharing as opposed to 'learning'

- 2) instead of one longer, more involved and application based coaching program (designed to help aspiring eco champs to be able to effectively share their ideas/projects), instead 'drop in workshops'

- 3) whether to focus on a) more confidence building and message development OR b) tangible video creation/output (but wondering whether participants will have the confidence to do this, without the a) coaching element?)

But I'm also very open to alternative ideas, views, challenges and opportunities.

So;
- What stops people engaging with free events and support?
- whats that thing that making it 'worth your while' to attend something?
- What is there too much of already?
- What is there not enough of?
- what are the emerging trends (positive and negative) of the industry?
- what's the balance (and cross overs) between community, business, and individuals?

Love to hear your thoughts
Thank you
😍❤️

I did the switch!

Bye bye HSBC
And hello Nationwide

Thank you for all the green banking advice everyone - it's good to know that a small thing like switching banks can make a big impact in improving my Carbon footprint

In the end I went for Nationwide for my current account, and will also be opening a Triodos account for my savings (as the advice was that it's good to split your money, plus it's useful to have a bigger bank/branch for the bigger things)
..and all done on the day I got my Carbon Literacy Certificate through (which was my committed personal action from the programme)

Switching was actually super simple to do - and what I like about the switch guarantee is that (as well as them transfering my direct debits) is that if I have any clients accidentally pay me into my old account, it automatically gets transferred to me

I'm feeling quite chuffed I managed to have a proper 'bank holiday-y' bank holiday! - which is a big deal for me...Becau...
27/05/2024

I'm feeling quite chuffed I managed to have a proper 'bank holiday-y' bank holiday! - which is a big deal for me...

Because I'll admit, in the past my work-aholic-ness, would have meant I'd have seen the long weekend as a chance to 'catch up' and/or 'get a head start'

But since getting my new place (that is actually mine-mine!) something seems to have switched in my head!

As a result I spent the weekend repotting plants (and realising just how many I had!!!....and then how many more pots I needed to go buy!! haha) !!! haha

And painting (something I've not done for a long time ... although I must admit, I did get frustrated I couldn't find my flow as quick as I used to! and trying to paint a BIG canvas ie sail! outside with a breeze is not recommended!!) with my mum and sister-in-law (with some bubbles in the sun, which obviously helped!!)

*and before any smarty pants points it out - yes I know my top and shorts are inside out....it's on purpose...incase I dropped any paint on myself!! (highly likely!!)

And ...seeing as it is Bank holiday... today I've been researching which green bank I want to switch to (I've got it down to Triodos and Nationwide)

Finding the balance between work-rest-play is something I'm sure many can relate to...but what's interesting was that it wasn't 'making a conscious effort' to 'force' myself to relax/not work that helped (in the past that always just made it worse/me more anxious)..

it was something deeper that had to switch for me; exactly what that is I'm still working out! (I'll keep you posted as/when I work that one out!!)

But what I do know is that there is often no point fighting yourself with enforced goals, but rather I prefer to reflecting on the root cause of the resistance/persistence.

A hard think to do at times I know...but when it does come - it doesn't require effort.... it just is/does, and then stuff just shifts!

24/05/2024

Advice please; the best Green Banks UK
...Specifically from a customer experience and usability point of view (as well as obviously their green credentials)

Also, is there anything to be aware of when switching? ie. is it true it's good to keep your old bank account open, with no money in, as its good for your credit score?

Keen to hear people thoughts and first hand experiences - beyond the comparison graphs and charts I can search for online

This action to switch to a more sustainable bank has been promoted by my participation and committed action as part of Impact Amplified 's 1day Ignite: Carbon programme (which includes UN-approved Carbon Literacy Training certification)

They've got a couple more sessions left before the summer break and so if you're interested give Olivia and Layla a shout

Yesterday was such a amazing and heartwarming experience;
..Working with some incredible students - who were all super courageous** in shared BIG, powerful and very moving stories and experiences

Over just 4 hours - after a quiet start, they slowly began to open up, share, and by the end were able to both film short videos AND share in person (around the camp fire!) TEDx style talks - all about their experience and learning of the Nurture Forest School at EKC Broadstairs College

This amazing project won the Trailblazer prize at the Green School Awards - lead by Social Enterprise Kent - and which I was pleased to sponsor with this storytelling workshop.
..And its easy to see why they won; using nature and outdoor learning as a way of supporting young people at risk of becoming NEET (not in education, employment or training).

I love it when eco AND social come together so perfectly! And this group shows it in action wonderfully.

One of my favourite things about running these sessions - is not only seeing the personal growth and confidence in participants in being able to express themselves - but also seeing how groups and teams gain a new level of connection, comradery and understanding of each other.
..because its when we feel safe to work together to share challenges, develop collective knowledge, and gain courage** to move forward - this is when new possibilities and ideas can flourish.

Thank you very much to the SEK team Jo, Gina and to EKC Sam, Sarah, Pete - and of course the amazing students for trusting, embracing and being super courageous 🙂

**Courage = feeling fear, but taking action anyway (as opposed to 'Bravery' = not feeling any fear) ...this was a big lesson that came up for many today, and I think is really important one for the sustainability sector to embrace

This video is for those of you out there making a difference ...but who hesitant to call yourselves 'leaders'...

Yes - I'm talking to all you grassroots, emergent, future, even 'reluctant' leaders!1

Because I think maybe we need to reclaim the term 'leadership' and 'leadership development'; to not be limited to just 'C-suite' and 'management'

Because, in my experience, when someone is working on how to share a new idea, how to champion new sustainable projects, how to be confident speaking publicly or on video, etc...
... one of the big, but often unconscious, underlying fears - is that when you speak up you start to become a leader (whether you want to or not!).

But many of us don't see ourselves as 'leaders' - not in a management, c-suite kind of way at least.

Yet I believe they are ...

Why?

Because you are passionate and committed to make a positive difference - in your own unique area of interest and expertise.

And this, I believe, is where and for whom 'leadership development' should be there for.

What do you think?

Do you cringe at the thought of calling yourself a 'leader'?
(but secretly you want people to listen to you and make the positive changes you see are so vital?)

Or do you and your organisation recognise and support those grassroots, emergent leaders?

I used to be petrified of public speaking …but now I really enjoy it!

So I wanted to share with you the tip - or rather the mindset shift - that enabled me to make this transition!

I realised;

It wasn’t that I was BAD or NO GOOD at expressing myself and public speaking (that I used to believe when I was younger)

Actually - what was going on was;

When I struggle to articulate something clearly and concisely - often its because there are elements of what I want to say that I’m unclear about

Its NOT that I CANT do it - I’m just NOT QUITE READY yet!

And this enabled me to stop beating myself up or making myself wrong!!
…the first big hurdle to overcome!!

So, the question then becomes … how do I GET CLEAR?!

Yes we can journal, write it up, condense it etc etc

But you’ve still got to then translate this in to speaking it…

So, what Ive found works best - is to use the PROCESS of speaking it out loud, as the way to work out what and how you want to say

This may be with a friend, colleague, etc …or what works for me, is to talk it through on video …just like I’m doing here!!!

…of course you dont have to publish it if you dont want - and you’ll probably do lots of takes (i certainly do at times!!)

But its great way to kill two birds with one stone; getting clear, and getting confident! Simultaneously!!

………………

Would you like help supporting your team in being able to express their ideas, values, knowledge on video or public speaking?

I’m a presenter and coaching - and I help teams overcome their concerns about communication and sharing ideas

31/01/2024

What I love about presenting...getting to learn about a huge range of sustainable solutions for different sectors
...oh and getting to wear very fetching outfits of course!! Hahaha

Today I've been filming with Damian from MMS 360 MEDIA for Boss Plant Hire Ltd and NXTGENbps

30/01/2024

Qu; What, for you, is the relationship between…
A) Public speaking
B) Idea development and
C) Leadership development?...

In my experience, public speaking is the acute issue so many of us face ie. hate!

Yet, from my work, I see time and time again the root of this fear often comes down to a lack of clearly in what we want to say (ie. our idea/knowledge/value add to others etc)

….but more recently, its hit me …that maybe there is another layer underneath this;

The challenge of ‘seeing ourselves as’ leaders (and when I say ‘leader’ I dont me solely in a management sense - but rather someone who steps up to make a positive impact, at any level)

…and all the responsibility and fear that comes with that.

For me, concerns around public speaking is just the symptom…

If we have the courage to address what’s underneath; we start to unlock something so much more impactful; both for ourselves, and the world.

But I’d love to hear your thoughts on how these 3 layers interact

…………..

I a coach and presenter and I help businesses empower their emergent, future leaders to be able to express themselves and the ideas that matter most

And what ideas matter more right now - than those addressing climate action and sustainable innovation!!

28/01/2024

Ive not been practicing what I preach

I help people express their ideas … but Ive not been expressing mine recently

Because … the ideas I’ve been working on recently have been new …and therefore I’m less clear …and therefore its harder to articulate them …and therefore less clear and concise …and therefore l’m less confident!!

…and that’s ok!

…and that’s normal!!

Its so common to beat ourselves up for not being able to perfectly deliver what we want to say…

But while the content of what we want to say is still just coming evolving and coming into focus - its it ok if we struggle to articulate it

So I’m not beating myself up for having not done any videos for a while

And you shouldn’t either!!

BUT DO find ways - in safe spaces - to be able to explore and uncover what it is your want to say

IN ORDER TO build clarity and confidence in both your ideas, what you want to say, and to practice speaking it out loud!

Before we get confident - we need to be courageous!

…………….

I’m a presenter and coach

I help businesses help their staff to express their ideas;

I think lack of confidence can be a big blocker to people getting out on their bikes, right?

Most of us, if we were lucky, learnt to ride a bike as kids - and like anything, the longer you are out of the habit the harder it is to get back into it.

And its even harder if you never did it much as a kid

But, like any new habit - its all about starting small, and building confidence slowly.

Personally I don't currently do tend to do longer rides/trips, but wherever and as much as possible I try to get into the habit of using my bike for smaller, local trips.

You know - those sorts of routes where its sometimes actually quicker to take the bike than driving; because you can both take more direct, cut-through routes, and then I don't have to battle with the frustration of having to find a parking space in town!!

Its also less scary - as the traffic is naturally slower, and if I feel nervous at any points I can always hop off and rejoin the pavement.

If you want to build the confidence to cycle a bit more, today's final FULL GEAR FOR THE NEW YEAR video with Ashford Borough Council - has some tips on making sure you're set up right and refreshing your road safety.
