With this pro-longed heat wave, you need to ask yourself four questions before working or playing outdoors: Do you have enough water? Do you have temporary shade available? Do you know the symptoms of heat-related illnesses? Do you know who to call in an emergency? www.osha.gov/heat

Stay safe in the heat and take appropriate actions to keep yourself cool.

Looking at the upcoming weekend, I can start off by saying that I am already timing in our next system. However, the warm temperatures will be sticking with us. Let's jump into the details so you know what to expect...

1) We will be seeing some intervals of clouds and sunshine with low precipitation chances to kick off the weekend. So, if you are planning to do anything outdoors this weekend, Saturday will be your day to do it.

2) Storms are forecast to move in through the day Sunday (mainly during the afternoon and overnight hours) and could contain gusty winds and small hail (current main threats). More details on that though will be posted closer to that time.

3) The warmer temperatures will unfortunately be staying with us leaving us with highs in the upper 80s and lower 90s. Lows will be in the upper 60s and lower 70s. However, I can hint that we will be getting some relief as we enter into next week (but it won't be for long).

A beautiful (but hot 🥵) evening! We have some blue skies, upper-level cirrus clouds, and some towering cumulonimbus clouds.

This heat and humidity make perfect conditions for storm development meaning that we could see a stray shower or storm anytime. Storm chances, however, will increase as we head later into the week as we will be seeing a system move through the region.

AIR QUALITY ALERT IN EFFECT FOR THURSDAY JUNE 20...

The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection has issued a code ORANGE air quality alert for Thursday, including the greater Pittsburgh region, including Allegheny, Butler, Beaver, Armstrong, Washington, Westmoreland and Fayette counties.

A code ORANGE air quality alert means that air pollution concentrations within the region may become unhealthy for sensitive groups. Sensitive groups include children, the elderly, and people suffering from asthma, heart disease, or other lung diseases. The effects of air pollution can be minimized by avoiding outdoor exercise or strenuous activity.

The Excessive Heat Warning and Heat Advisories currently in effect have been extended a day until 8PM Saturday. WPC HeatRisk maps can be found at https://www.wpc.ncep.noaa.gov/heatrisk/

19/06/2024

Surprise! Another hot day, another Marginal Risk. Today the threat for wind stays mostly north of the area, but does cover an area north of New Philadelphia to Clarion. We expect coverage of afternoon storms to be less than we've seen these past couple of days. That's good news for avoiding more storm damage and storm-related power outages, but bad news for heat relief in the evening. Stay cool out there!

18/06/2024

The Heat Advisory has been upgraded to an Excessive Heat Warning for Butler, Beaver, Allegheny, Washington, Westmoreland, and Fayette counties through Friday.

Looking at the rest of the week, we will be seeing some sunshine but can't completely rule out a storm or two. Let's jump into the details...

1) Intervals of clouds and sunshine are expected through the rest of the week (for the most part).

2) Branching from the previous point, we can't completely rule out the chance for a storm or two as the heat and humidity create the perfect conditions for storm development. Storm chances will also be increasing at the end of the week as we will be seeing a system moving in. More details on that though will be coming in a later update.

3) Conditions will be hot and humid as we head through the week with highs reaching the lower to mid 90s. Lows will be in the upper 60s and lower 70s. Heat index values will also likely reach triple digits so make sure you take precautionary actions to keep yourself cool. And... make sure your fans and air conditioners are working properly as you will need them.

EXCESSIVE HEAT WATCH UPGRADED TO HEAT ADVISORY

A Heat Advisory remains in effect until 8 PM EDT Friday for portions of east central Ohio, northwest, southwest, and western Pennsylvania, and northern and the northern panhandle of West Virginia. Heat index values up to 100 are expected. Hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses.

ADDITIONAL DETAILS...
Although afternoon thunderstorms have provided cooling relief across many parts of the region, a return to hot and humid conditions will again return on Tuesday and continue throughout the week.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.

Take extra precautions when outside. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing. Try to limit strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Take action when you see symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency! Call 9-1-1.

Get ready for some warmer weather as we will be seeing the heat and humidity beginning to move in through the weekend! And for a little hint... next week will be a lot worse. Let's jump into the details...

1) We will be seeing some plentiful sunshine with rather low precipitation chances as we head through the weekend. It will definitely be a perfect weekend for jumping in the pool or sitting outside on the deck and getting a little bit of a tan.

2) Humidity and dew point levels will be increasing making the temperatures feel hotter than they actually are. However, next week will be worse as we could see real feel temperatures hitting triple digits.

3) Actual temperatures will be in the 80s for the highs with lows being in the 50s and 60s. So, with the warmer temperatures on the way, make sure that your air conditioners and fans are in proper working order and to dig out the summer clothes!

While we will be seeing some cooler temperatures through the first half of the week, there is a big warm-up in store for us at the end of the week. With that being said, we will be seeing some above-average temperatures through the next couple of weeks, according to the temperature outlook in the shared post.

Cooler temperatures on Monday (highs in the 60s for most of us!?), but we have a big warmup on the way with above-average temperatures forecast for much of the next two weeks. Ensembles are hinting that widespread 90s may be possible by next Monday🔥

Looking at the overall week, it is looking to be rain-free for the most part. Let's jump into the details so you know what to expect...

1) Through most of the week, we will be seeing low precipitation chances for the most part but would still keep the umbrella handy.

2) Branching off of the last point, we could see a pop-up shower, especially on Monday and Friday. However, nothing too significant is expected.

3) The temperatures will remain cool through the first half of the week with highs being in the 60s and 70s but will warm up into the 80s (almost 90s) during the second half of the week. The lows will be in the 50s and 60s.

05/06/2024

With the storms that will be moving through the region tomorrow afternoon and evening, we could see the potential for some of the storms reaching severe levels, however, the probability is very low. Most of the Ohio Valley will be under a marginal risk category for severe weather which means the severity will stay at an isolated level. Main threats include damaging wind and small hail. Keep in mind though that we shouldn't have too much of a concern with severe weather, however, the potential is there.

Have you ever seen altocumulus clouds? If you haven’t, here’s a photo that was taken a couple years ago today in Worthington, PA at the old office headquarters.

Altocumulus clouds are middle-level clouds and originates from the Latin words for “high” and “heaped.” They form when stable winds at the ground level carry moist air to higher altitudes. When the air rises, it cools and the moisture in the air condenses, forming these types of clouds. Pretty unique, heh?
