Today we remember jazz innovator Charlie "Bird" Parker, born on this day in 1920. A leading player in the rise of Be-Bop, Bird is one of the most influential artists of all time, his name synonymous with uncompromising musical artistry and intellect.

Early in his career, Parker played with Jay McShann’s band, reportedly the first African American band to perform a dance at the University of Missouri, laying the groundwork for integration in public spaces. He went on to collaborate with fellow bebop innovators including Earl Hines and , and recorded with , , and more — helping shape modern jazz and inspiring the Beat Generation. In 1984, he was posthumously inducted into the Hall of Fame.

Which of 's recordings are you spinning today in his honor?
