Reach Reach showcases the best art and creative writing by Missouri Western State University students, sta Submissions are accepted year-round.

Reach is dedicated to building a journal to showcase the best arts and literary work by Missouri Western State University students, staff, and alumni. Reach is sponsored by the MWSU Foundation and the English and Modern Languages Department. Email all submissions to [email protected] or hand-deliver them to the mailroom in Eder 221. We look forward to reading your work and seeing your art!

All submissions must have:
current contact Information
a short bio
list of titles
MWSU relationship

You can submit up to:
3 pieces of prose (3,000 word limit)
7 pieces of poetry
7 pieces of art

Response time is usually within two months.

Staff Member of the Week: Travis

Travis is a senior at Missouri Western majoring in creative writing and publishing. It is estimated that he has spent about 10% of his life either hanging out in libraries or with his nose buried in a book. When not reading or writing he enjoys exploring, playing video games, and listening to music. In the future, he hopes to obtain a career in publishing or as a freelance writer.

Staff Member of the Week: Gwen Lack

Gwen is a nontraditional student who fell in love with the liberal arts. She earned a physics degree in 2020 and is perusing her second degree in creative writing and publishing. She loves writing but more importantly, she loves to edit her work and others'. She enjoys taking long walks on the west coast as well as hand feeding the squirrels and other small animals around her house.

Gwen has two essays published in Discovering the Student, Discovering the Self, a short-story in Reach, two poems published in Otis Nebula, and one short story published in Please See Me. She hopes to become a content editor for an online magazine.

Allyson is currently in her final year at Missouri Western State University. She is majoring in creative writing and publication and minoring in English technical communication and literature. In her spare time, she enjoys reading, writing, and making jewelry.

Cooking up, for the hundredth time,
A little something from her
Limited Midwestern repertoire.
Cigarette going in the ashtray,
The red wine pulsing in its glass,
A warning light meaning
Everything was simmering
Just below the steel lid
Of her smile, as she boiled
The beef into submission,
Chopped her way
Through the vegetable kingdom
With the broken-handled knife
I use tonight, feeling her
Anger rising from the dark
Chambers of the head
Of cabbage I slice through,
Missing her, wanting
To chew things over
With my mother again
