Let's Goooo! I love anything at 6 AM...In fact, why isn't it open at 3 AM?
My first Dana Armstrong event was the original, the "Valley Fever" early morning show at the Yucca Tap Room... It lasted all day, with people ordering Bloody Mary's at 6 AM. I hadn't seen people drinking in a bar before noon since I left New York.

Marty Shanks took me and taught me how to Two-Step: He said, "I know it's 'torture' but if you are gonna dance in Arizona, you'll need to learn how to Two-Step."
It was the greatest day! (RIGHT, Rosa Scalzo?) I am SURE this Sunday will be SO MUCH FUN: It is a hellluva line up of bands! The The Hashknife Outfit, Bobby Perez's "Supertonkers", Dime Store Western , and Lottie and the Lizards.

THE QUAKES + THE DEVILLAINS

It was like a scene from "When Worlds Collide": LOOK at this first image. This lady in her polka dots with the flower in her hair, and the punk rokka psycho are at THE SAME SHOW.
They are both here for The Quakes-The Devillains show at Rips Bar.

Not too many bands in the “…billy” genre (rockabilly, psychobilly, punkabilly) can boast 14 records, over 30 years as a band, and most importantly, attracting NEW YOUNG FANS. The Quakes can.

The question that all clubs, promoters and the bands themselves want to know is WHERE THE YOUNG PEOPLE AT? Is rockabilly truly dying because the OG’s are literally dying or moved to Florida?
I think people have gotten too comfortable post-Pandemic, with their remotes and gaming headsets. I have experienced virtual reality, I have tested the META goggles, the Oculus, the Qualcomm chip VR headsets- Trust me, There is NOTHING that can compare to a live show.

In spite of it being really noticeable that the usual suspects (car clubs and bikers) have thinned out, stayed home or even disappeared completely, by the time The Quakes appeared on the stage at Rip’s, the house was sold out and packed with “barely-legal-to-OG’s” who were there to watch these guys who are always guaranteed to deliver.

I do not know how Paul Roman keeps that non-stop high-energy level going throughout the whole set, with about 20 back-to-back songs, strategically placed to include favorites and some of the tracks from their newest release, “Western Bop”.

What the Quakes do up there is personal to me: I hear their London flavor from the time they were there in the UK, when America was not recognizing the talent of the early Quakes, and they went overseas (a story unto itself). But it’s that British punk influence that I think makes The Quakes’ music a cut above everybody else here. The QUAKES play completely original music (with the exception of “Paint It Black”) from the prolific mind of Paul Roman supported by the brilliant ear of Wes Hinshaw and the explosive and remarkably precise drumming of Juan C Larios.

The DeVillains surprised us diehard fans with some new material: Some new rockabilly tracks plus a Paula Abdul cover and a “Dead or Alive” cover. I have been watching Austin Case and Donny D. Ville for maybe 8 years now - super talented players, both - plus Juan on drums (not the Quakes' Juan) has settled in from the first time he appeared with them not long ago at the BASH.

The DeVillains will be at Chopper John's this Friday!

Rockabillians- please just GO! If you are sitting home on a weekend night and you are immobilized by the couch magnet, toss that remote to the wind and get to a show. You will be so glad you made that decision.
