Welcome to the Christmas edition of Digressio Express. In this issue we take a look at Advent and Christmas traditions spanning the full course of Christian history, and contribute a bit of tradition of our own in the form of a new Christmas carol composed in the style of a sea shanty.

The mission of Roman Roads Press is to help families “inherit the Humanities.” The task of recapturing the rich Western and Christian tradition may seem daunting at times. There is no better time to start and no more enjoyable way to practice than through claiming as your inheritance our culture’s historic Christmas traditions and making them your own. So as you bake a favorite recipe, incorporate an ancient tradition, or sing a brand new carol, you are honing the skill of inheriting the humanities.

Merry Christmas!

"The Biblical view of creation maintains that things are precious before they are contributory, they have meaning before they are useful to us. They are useful to us precisely because God makes them meaningful. Modernity says that things are precious if they are contributory and I’m the one who decides how and when and if they contribute at all. The price of this supposed “freedom”, of untethering the world from the One Who made it and from His purposes for it, is the loss of the capacity for joy. Joy isn’t a simple feeling like happiness, joy has reasons. It is a response to God’s goodness in creation, to the way things really are. The Biblical view of creation affirms that there is meaning to the world long before I show up to appreciate it." Joshua Appel

In this episode of the Digressio Podcast, Daniel Foucachon sits down with Tim Griffith (the creator of Picta Dicta) and Reuben Jansen (the author of Picta Dicta Latin Primer) to discuss the art of learning Latin the right way, which means speaking and using Latin.

Reuben tells us the story of how Latin Primer came about, and we discuss what speaking and using Latin as a living language looks like, and why it is worth pursuing. Come listen to some Latin (don't worry, we'll teach you - even in this podcast!).

Wes Callihan (instructor of Old Western Culture) is famous for telling his students that “The rabbit trail is the point!” In his teaching, Wes returns to the medieval notion of the Digressio. A digressio (or “rabbit trail”) is a tangent related to the main subject at hand. It was used by Homer, Herodotus, Vergil, Cicero, and the Medievals as a rhetorical device. It is a way of teaching and an approach to education which sees the world as interconnected and embodied. Therefore a tangent from the current subject isn’t really a diversion. And it works! When a teacher strays from the main point of a lecture because the subject at hand reminds him of a story, the chances are that the concepts of that lesson will stick in a child’s mind. A digressio acts as a hook for the imagination and memory. It is the story the child brings to the dinner table, tells his friends, and remembers. It unleashes curiosity. It becomes part of a child’s education. We hope Digressio will help you cultivate many “digressios” in your own lives and homes, captivating your imagination and memory. We hope the articles (and curriculum) contained in this magazine will cause you to pause, perhaps laugh, wonder, and grapple with the world and the Word.
