Three common themes – love, laughter, and coffee – connect several local ladies each Thursday morning at Sylvia’s in downtown Eatonton. Opened just over a year ago, the popular coffee shop attached to the Georgia Writers Museum typically hosts between a half dozen to 15 or so women in an informal “coffee klatch,” a title that some embrace and others disdain.

Nikki Barker wears many hats. This day she sports one proclaiming her status as an Iraqi Freedom U.S. Army veteran. But Barker also serves as the local VFW Veterans of Foreign Wars Commander, manager of the VFW Thrift Store, and president of the Putnam County Veterans Wall of Honor.

Between all those facets, Barker said approximately $40,000 has gone to support local veterans so far this year.

“And then, within the state of Georgia, $20,000 was given to Honor Flight, which takes veterans on a one-day trip to Washington and back to see all the monuments and memorials there,” she explained. “And we’ve had a couple of different small ones along with a monthly donation to the Veterans Park here and we give a monthly donation to the VFW to continue on with their different projects and things like that.”
