Your content should not ‘always be selling’. Unless you've built trust and are in that phase of the purchase journey with your community.
What exactly does that mean for your small business social media marketing?
If you're in the Awareness phase, you want to be sure your message is relatable to the people you want to attract; building a community.
If you're in the Engagement phase, you are focused on nurturing your community, helping them get to know you more and more.
Eventually they start trusting you. And it's only then will they be open to your offer. The Conversion phase.
And what builds TRUST?
YOU.
So lead with your story; your message.
Not your business.
Not your sales pitch.
Because when it's time to introduce your offer, it won't feel so 'icky'.

How many social media platforms are you on?
If you're on more than one, is it because you want to reach more people?
I'm here to tell you that reach isn’t always the answer.
What is a better approach?
Put your time and focus on engaging the COMMUNITY you’ve built on your main platform.
Even if you’re just starting and your follower count is 100 people, they represent 100 people who are there for a reason.
Your story resonated with them.
You now have an incredible opportunity to help them get to the place they want to be.
Solving a problem. The transformation they seek.
And the only way they'll get there is by helping them to get to know you more and more, and ultimately trust you.
If you're on multiple platforms, you may not be paying as much attention to the very important process that I call 'nurturing your community'.
You'll find yourself only focused on growth, using tactics that have you doing things to get noticed.
And eventually burnt out because you're not seeing success.
So try this instead....
✨You have a community who wants to get to know you better. Tell a story.
✨You have a community who wants to learn from you. Teach them.
✨You have a community who appreciates your expertise. Keep them informed and knowledgeable.
✨You have a community who trusts you. Show up for THEM.

International Women’s Day: Using our voices in unexpected places
On International Women's Day, I was proud to use my voice to support women and the families they care so much about.
As women, when we come together, great things happen!
And being able to share my story, with government leaders, I was grateful to use my voice; to help protect women and their families; their husbands, fathers, grandfathers, brothers, from the pain and suffering of prostate cancer.
Yesterday, I got to spend my day on Capitol Hill, meeting with some of our congressional leaders from IL, to ask for support on four critical programs and bills, in the fight to end prostate cancer:
1️⃣$120M budget for the Prostate Cancer Research Program at the DoD, for treatments and diagnostic testing, especially for late stage prostate cancer that is no longer curable.
2️⃣ Funding for CDC prostate cancer activities run through state health departments dedicated to prostate cancer programs; outreach, education and resources for men at high risk.
3️⃣A bill, H.R. 1176, that will eliminate and break down a barrier (cost-sharing) to receiving a PSA test, a critical blood test that will detect prostate cancer, for men who are highest risk (family history and African American).
4️⃣A new bill about to be introduced to the House, to monitor, coordinate and evaluate the activities of Federal prostate cancer research programs, ultimately helping critical efforts move towards a cure more quickly.
1 in 8 men will develop prostate cancer in their lifetime and after decades on the decline, deaths from prostate cancer are on the rise; a 63% increase in diagnoses and 17% rise in deaths.
For African American men, that statistic increases to 1 in 6; putting them at higher risk.
And for men with family history, they are 2.2 times more likely to develop prostate cancer.
I have personally felt the pain and suffering associated with prostate cancer. My father was diagnosed with stage 4, metastatic prostate cancer in 2014. But he was able to live a full life
Do you want more followers?
I have to say I feel awful leading my caption with that question! 😝
But it's still a question so many of us are attracted to on social media.
We want to know how to get that magical number of X (you fill in the blank) because we think it will help us attract clients and elevate our businesses.
Sure, we all want followers. But your follower count should be based on one thing, and one thing only...
⭐ Building a COMMUNITY of the RIGHT FOLLOWERS ⭐️
And the right followers come when your MESSAGE is a consistent, valuable message that resonates with them.
A message that is a true representation of YOU. And when it is authentic and real, it also feels right to you.
When it doesn't, it means you're letting go of who you are and what you want to be known for; your MESSAGE, in favor of vanity.
And vanity my friends is hard to keep up!
It's why you will always hear this from me...do what feels right; for you and for your community. Because your community represents the people who are most invested in your message.
And it's YOU who they believe in. The person who can help them envision the transformation you offer, for themselves.
So, let me rephrase the initial 'icky' question to this...Do you want more of the RIGHT followers?✨

How do I grow my followers.
And I can confidently say it's also the last time they ask the question once they know me!
Because it's not about 'growing followers'.
Of course you want to grow on social media.
It's about growth by building COMMUNITY.
Because community is different from followers!
Here's what I mean....
If you just want to show a follower count for vanity, you're most likely not concerned if they're the right followers.
The right followers are people (not just a number) who find value in who you are. They want to get to know you, the engage because they find value in what you have to say, and ultimately, they trust you as their go-to.
That my friend is COMMUNITY.
Growing followers will often have you doing things that don't align your brand and message with the people you want to serve.
Growing followers will only have you resort to tactics that will lead to burn out.
Why?
Because you're only focused on the number.
On the flip side, when you're focused on the people you want to serve, that's when you start creating content that is valuable and engaging.
And that's how you grow.✨

Community and collaboration. Two things I valued the most this year.
Without community; women entrepreneurs who, like me, wanted a place to feel safe saying what we're good at but also where we need help, I would not have been able to move my business forward in the best way possible.
It's because of community that I developed the most incredible relationships that ultimately fostered amazing collaborations and partnerships.
