In 2022 we were asked to provide a few items for ’s Timestalker, by its fantastic makeup designer . The film deals with Agnes, a woman pursuing an ill fated romance through many historical periods, often causing her to part company with her head…

We made a head lifecast of the lovely Alice, who plays Agnes, and produced a Monster Clay positive from it. Once it was tidied up & the eyes opened we moulded it again in fibreglass, from which we produced the silicone head. After the paint job was finished it was fitted with resin eyes and finished off with eyebrows, eyelashes and a partial hairpiece, with hand punched hair around the sides & front hairline.

This was a really fun project to be involved in with some great things to make. Many thanks to Nik and Alice for having us along for the ride and check out this brilliant independent film while it’s in theatres!

House Of The Dragon
Season 2 Ep8: The Queen That Ever Was

*SPOILERS AHEAD*

During Daemon’s stay at Harrenhal he has been plagued by visions from his past, but in this episode he has a vision of things to come, involving some key events that took place in A Game Of Thrones. Included in these is a glimpse of a White Walker leading an army of the dead.

As well as several undead makeups, we were given the task of creating a prosthetic makeup of a White Walker (NOT the Night King) that would fit within the visual aesthetic of the later series’ of GOT, as established by the talented folks over at BGFX. Working over a lifecast of movement performer Paul Casey, a plastiline sculpt was produced and after being approved was split up and moulded in sections. We only dealt with the face as the high collar of the costume made a neck piece unnecessary. Once the silicone pieces were run from the moulds they were prepainted before being applied and the makeup was finished off with a wig and costume from GOT assets and VFX reference contact lenses. These photos are from our initial test with eye enhancement & colour grade added in photoshop to illustrate the intended final look.

House Of The Dragon
Season 2 Ep3: The Burning Mill

*SPOILERS AHEAD*

At the start of this episode we find two groups of young men from houses Bracken and Blackwood in an argument over a boundary line. This quickly escalates, resulting in an aftermath shot of Aeron Bracken impaled through the neck by a sword against a backdrop of hundreds of soldiers lying dead on the battlefield.

Because the director wanted Aeron’s body to be found lying in a river the decision was taken to have a stand in dummy of actor made for the shoot. We 3D scanned Ryan’s head & shoulders in a few different positions and our Director, Geeta Patel, chose the one she liked. After printing the chosen version we produced a clay copy for final detailing and moulded it with a fibreglass core. Once the silicone head was poured, the paintwork was added before finishing off with the head & facial hairwork comprising of a partial wig and punched hairline. Lastly it was attached to a stock articulated dummy and dressed & broken down in situ before going into the river, and after some trial and error we found a good spot of riverbed to drive the sword into after exiting through the dummy’s neck.

House Of The Dragon
Season 2 Ep3: The Burning Mill

*SPOILERS AHEAD*

Mouldy Cheese!
As Ser Cristian Cole and his army leaves the Red Keep to go to war, we crane up and see the body of Cheese still hanging from the gallows, in an advanced state of decay & providing a tasty snack for the crows. We originally lifecast Cheese actor because his very full beard wouldn’t have yielded a very satisfactory 3D scan, and we were potentially going to make a fresh stage one dummy of him so the extra detail would have been useful. Ultimately Mark was happy to hang in the first hanging scene himself so we scanned his lifecast to make quicker work of taking the beard away & produced another clay copy of the print to have the rot for his decaying stage two dummy sculpted into it. Once the silicone head was poured, the paintwork was added before finishing off with the head & facial hairwork and beard. Lastly it was attached to an articulated polyfoam dummy using a 10mm aluminium armature wire embedded in the head’s fibreglass core to attach it to the body’s own frame, ensuring the head would stay attached whilst hanging.

House Of The Dragon
Season 2 Ep2: Rhaenyra The Cruel

*SPOILERS AHEAD*

I never fail to be surprised, given some of the horrendous stuff we make, at the outrage a shot of a naked body/ part can elicit! Still, as it’s gotten so much attention it seems rude not to credit the team…

This was a last minute request for the brothel scene, 2 prosthetic pen*ses turned around in around four days, over a pair of flesh Lycra pants and a hand knotted merkin for each. Only one was shot on ultimately, although imagine the horror if they’d both made it in! Weird. (Obviously Insta are unlikely to let me post photos so you’ll just have to use your imaginations, sorry.)

House Of The Dragon
Season 2 Ep2: Rhaenyra The Cruel

*SPOILERS AHEAD*

After failing to identify the ratcatcher responsible for the death of Prince Jaehaerys, King Aegon orders all ten castle ratcatchers to be hanged from the walls of the Red Keep. As well as Mark Stobbart, who played Cheese, the guilty ratcatcher, there were four stuntmen in the nooses immediately adjacent to him and we created five lifelike dummies to complete the required number of bodies.

As there were hardly any established ratcatchers we were able to 3D scan crew members to use, including our head mouldmaker , seen here. After scanning & digital cleanup we printed his head & shoulders and produced a clay cleanup cast before final moulding. Once the silicone head was poured, the paintwork was added before finishing off with the facial hairwork, beard & chest hair. Lastly it was attached to an articulated polyfoam dummy using a 10mm aluminium armature wire embedded in the head’s fibreglass core to attach it to the body’s own frame, ensuring the head would stay attached whilst hanging.

House Of The Dragon
Season 2 Ep1: Rhaenyra The Cruel

*SPOILERS AHEAD*

In the hours following the murder of prince Jaehaerys, the green council decide to use the incident as propaganda and win the sympathy of the public by having a state funeral with the young princes body on display for everyone to see. To accomplish this our prosthetics team were tasked with producing a realistic body of the five year old actor Jude Rock and have the head very clearly stitched to the body.

We 3D scanned Jude in close fitting swim shorts and lifecast his hands & feet in alginate, pulling out plastiline clay copies and blending them and a clay version of the head onto a plastiline copy of the cleaned up printed torso. After some general hand finishing & detailing of the face we moulded the assembled body and poured the whole upper body in silicone, attaching it to an articulated polyfoam set of legs. Once seamed & painted we fitted the head with a custom knotted wig finished with a punched hairline, brows & lashes.

Finally we had to remove the head, and after trying out several styles of stitching & threads (in collaboration with our fantastic Director Clare Kilner) we settled on gold thread with metal pins & clasps at the sides to reattach it in a way that felt regal but also drew attention to the line of decapitation.

* For all those who were worried about the boy’s head falling off during the funeral, we had a detachable steel cable holding the head to the body to take the stress off the silicone!

House Of The Dragon
Season 2 Ep1: A Son For A Son

*SPOILERS AHEAD*

In the final moments of the episode, after THAT incident, Helaena grabs her daughter Jaehaera from her bed and runs through the Red Keep looking for help, before finally reaching the safety of Alicent’s quarters. Because Phia Saban, who plays Helaena, had to run at speed through dimly lit corridors and down long flights of stairs we were asked to make a stand in dummy of the child for her to carry in wide shots where there could be a danger of her tripping & falling.

We 3D scanned child actor Lulu Barker in a swimsuit and lifecast her hands & feet with the help of her mother, pulling out plastiline clay copies and blending them onto the printed body’s arms & legs. After moulding the whole body we poured the head, hands & feet in silicone and attached them to an articulated polyfoam copy of the body. Once painted we fitted the head with a stock acrylic wig with a basic punched hairline, as we were never supposed to see her face because it would be tucked into Phia’s shoulder for the duration of the run.

House Of The Dragon
Season 2 Ep1: A Son For A Son

After Prince Lucerys and his Dragon Arrax were killed by Vaghar at the end of season 1 we begin season two with Rhaenyra’s discovery of a piece of Arrax’s wing, along with the remains of Lucerys’ cape & riding saddle. The wing needed to be interacted with by the fishermen who drag it ashore in their nets and by Rhaenyra, when she discovers her son’s belongings, so the decision was made to build it practically.

The forearm and “hand” were the only sculpted element, the “fingers” and membrane were fabricated using posable aluminium tubing sections and fine stretch netting impregnated with silicone. Once the finger sections were sewn into the membrane they were covered with textured blender pieces and finished with claws at the tips, then everything was painted and the edges of the wing were tattered to reflect it having been tossed around in the sea for 10 days. As the wing section was posable it cold finally be folded down for transporting to the filming location in wales.

A long time time ago etc etc, I got to work on the first of the Star Wars sequels, The Force Awakens, back in 2014. In a time when SW content was relatively thin on the ground (only six or three films, depending on your stance on midichlorians), this was an exciting one to be working on, most memorably shooting in Abu Dhabi as Tatooine. Whilst there, .bastyan and I had to look after the always lovely as his character, Unkar Plutt, made his first appearance buying parts from Rey in this location. We would later shoot the closeups & dialogue on a stage at Pinewood Studios with a fully stuck down prosthetic makeup but for the wides on location made a pull over mask to remove between takes in the 50 degree heat. This photo was taken during a fitting of the suit & mask, you can just see Vanessa hiding behind Simon’s shoulder.

Masters Of The Air: Episode 9

As Rosenthal’s fort flies over Berlin In what would be his last bombing mission of the war the nose turret is destroyed by flak, followed by the loss of an engine. After holding the plane level so the remaining crew can bail out, he heads back into the fuselage, stumbling into the body of the nose gunner, played by stunt performer Luke Gomes.

This makeup was a late addition to our build and marked our last outing on the show. Originally conceived as a more extensive injury, it was ultimately scaled back to this version, a piece of shrapnel embedded in the airman’s head with a severe laceration that has mangled his right eye. The makeup included a vac form plate holding the shrapnel, covered by an appliance & partial hairpiece and a punched eyebrow on the lacerated silicone piece. Photos from test & shoot days.

As always, big thanks to series makeup designer and her team for all their help and to for his patience.

Masters Of The Air: Episode 7

A bombing raid on Berlin on March 6th 1944 became known as Black Monday due to the number of fliers lost as a result. When the remaining forts return to Thorpe Abbotts there are multiple casualties on board, including a waist gunner with a large piece of his scalp ripped open and a compound fracture of the femur on another crew member. The insides of the B17’s were cramped and full of hard surfaces, jutting corners and other hazards that made getting thrown around inside the fuselage as dangerous as the flack and bullets that were flying around.

The scalping injury was made at short notice, so I decided (as with Clanton’s head injury in Ep 5) to section up and flatten the makeup to speed up the moulding process, using the sutures in the exposed skull as butting edges to join it all together on the actor’s (very helpfully) shaven head. Makeup & hair designer finished the effect off with sections of lace wig applied after the prosthetics were on.
The compound fracture was a large silicone piece that was applied to a Lycra leg sleeve with Velcro straps to tighten it once on the actors leg.
