Warm up at Barrington’s White House on Saturday, February 3, at the 7th annual modern-day “Town-Warming,” a Depression-era Barrington tradition that brought together some of the nation’s and our community’s most influential business, religious, academic, and civic leaders for a robust program covering significant issues of the day. The event will be held from 9 a.m. (doors open at 8:30 a.m.) to 4 p.m., with a cocktail reception to follow. This year’s program, “Intelligence: Artificial, Political, Central,” is headlined by former U.S. Secretary of State and CIA Director Mike Pompeo, who will be coming to us virtually from overseas in conversation with Motorola Solutions Chairman and CEO Greg Brown.
The event is produced by the Barrington Cultural Commission. Off and running! Congratulations to Barrington High School alumnus Lukas Van Ness whose NFL career kicks off this fall. Van Ness is an American football outside linebacker for the Green Bay Packers. He played college football at Iowa and was selected by the Packers in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft. Nicknamed “Hercules” by his Iowa teammates for his chiseled frame and work ethic, Van Ness found his footing as a defensive end at his hometown high school. Learn more at www.qbarrington.com

The Elgin Symphony Orchestra has announced its 2023-24 season line-up, and single tickets, as well as subscriptions, are now on sale. Also, the popular ESO holiday event will return to Saint Anne Catholic Community Dec. 3 for a Holiday Brass and Percussion concert. After the ESO opening concert in Elgin on Oct. 7 (featuring Grammy Award winning soprano Christine Brewer), the ESO will host a ticketed reception at The Heritage Ballroom, 100 Symphony Way, Elgin. Whether you are a poet who wants an audience—or you like poetry but would rather sit back and enjoy a picnic in the park while listening to original poems by locals, here is a fun summer event. On Thursday, June 22, from 6:30 to 8:00 pm, head over to the Robert Soule Amphitheater at Citizens Park with your chairs, blankets, and picnic baskets. For POETS, the theme will be “Summer…Sunshine and Storms.” Poems must be original and read by the author. Submit up to three poems from now until May 31. Annual Signature Dinner Celebrates “Brewing Success in 2023”

On Thursday, January 26, 2023, the Barrington Area Chamber of Commerce leadership, and a large group of members gathered at the Wild Onion Pub for networking, dinner, a silent auction, and more. Chamber Chairwoman Jen Frey (Jen Frey Coaching) offered her thoughts in the Chairman’s Welcome. “In our 54th year, the Barrington Area Chamber of Commerce serves 11 communities and over 800 members. Throughout the year, we offer over 200 networking opportunities and a multitude of programs all designed to help our members promote their businesses, products, and services. Our goals are all the same—creating strong businesses and a vibrant community.” Guests mingled while the Judson Brown Band performed a mix of rock, pop, and country music. Several food stations offered a wide variety of options for dinner. After dinner wrapped up, Suzanne Corr, Chamber President and CEO, shared announcements and member awards. The event’s Premier Sponsors were Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital and Barrington Bank & Trust. Entertainment was sponsored by BMO Wealth Management. Tulum by the Turquoise Sea

Heading south from Cancun approximately 75 miles, and worlds apart, is the coastal town of Tulum, in the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico. Tulum can be described as three destinations in one, each unique and worth visiting.
Tulum has one of the best-preserved Mayan Sites in Mexico with ruins along the east coastline of the Yucatán Peninsula overlooking the sea. Tulum was one of the last cities built and occupied by the Mayans until the end of the 16th century. The ruins are available to see for a small fee, either on your own or with a guide. Tulum city is also a typical tourist town with a fair share of shops, restaurants, clubs, and services for locals and guests.
Perhaps the most surprising area of Tulum is located off the main streets of town, about a three-mile drive along the rugged beach road. Located at the Sian Ka’an Biosphere, a UNESCO World Heritage site and home to thousands of species of flora, fauna, and wildlife emerges the sleepy beach resort area of Tulum. Relaxed and Bohemian in nature, it somewhat resembles an expensive summer camp. A single lane dirt road with no sidewalks takes you through this jungle-like beachfront setting lined with campy shops, exciting dance clubs, and open-air restaurants. Unique beach resorts built of local woods, natural fibers and stone elements, blend into the jungle terrain.
