A Common Love...

Some places leave a mark on you from the moment you first experience them.

Chances are that if you’re reading this, any of our six beautiful Brunswick County beaches could qualify as one of those places for you. Tucked away on the southernmost coast of North Carolina are six coastal paradises, all unique but exquisite in their own perfect ways. Hugging the Atlantic from east to west are the communities of Bald Head Island, Caswell Beach, Oak Island, Holden Beach, Ocean Isle Beach and Sunset Beach.

These places may be separated by an inlet off the Intracoastal Waterway, but they share the same sandy beaches, delectable seafood dives and familiar faces that we go back to see every year. Many of us landed here by coincidence, vacationing with friends or family. Yet, once we experienced these places, we knew that we would be coming back time and time again. What is it about these Brunswick County beaches that never ceases to fill our coastal craving?

Is it the tranquil paradise of Bald Head Island that is only accessible by ferry but makes for the perfect family vacation without any worldly distractions? The lack of cars and commercialized materialism that seems to slow everything down when we need it most?

Is it the long, narrow 14 mile coastline shared by Oak Island and Caswell Beach that boasts nothing but pristine sunset views and a plethora of locals all eager to share with you their gem? The short drive to Southport for a meal to Provisions and a drink beforehand at AFC?

Is it the tight-nit community of Holden Beach that annually ranks as one of America’s best “family beaches” and doesn’t have a hint of commercial property on the island itself? The most expansive beaches in all of Brunswick County that let you zone out all your troubles?

Is it the unique geography of Ocean Isle Beach that fills all your saltwater desires with their endless canals perfect for a man, his family or friends and his boat? The unwinding from a long day fishing at the famous Ocean Isle Beach pier followed by a cold drink at Sharky’s?

Or is it the tiny, quaint town of Sunset Beach that lends the option of being tucked away in a sleepy beach town but close to the fun located in Myrtle Beach just a short drive away? The seemingly endless number of golf courses ideally located just over the bridge off the island?

The crazy thing is, these are just a few examples of reasons we keep coming back to the Brunswick County beaches. Thousands of people could list their own set of traditions that thousands of others would be able to equally relate to. Sure, these things give us incentive to budget out a yearly trip to our favorite beach, but the true reason we all keep coming back is something simple enough that we ought never forget it.

We all have a common love, and that love is for these Brunswick County beaches. They are all intertwined in many beautiful, unforeseen ways and all it takes is one trip down here to rekindle that true love.

BOCO, an idea inspired by the term locals have used for years to refer to Brunswick County, came to fruition from generations of Brunswick County visitors and residents desiring for others to experience the majesty of these islands that we know and love so well.
