GLENN SHEELEY RELEASES CAREER MEMOIR, WITH FOREWORD BY TERRY BRADSHAW

PITTSBURGH/ATLANTA, July 9, 2024 (PittsburghNewsWire.com) — Former award-winning Pittsburgh and Atlanta sportswriter Glenn Sheeley has released his career memoir, BETTER THAN LIFTING THINGS, a behind-the-scenes, entertaining trip through his 44 years in and out of newspapers, which started professionally in his mid-20s, covering the iconic Pittsburgh Steelers of the 1970s.

Featuring a foreword by NFL Hall of Famer and FOX Sports personality Terry Bradshaw, BETTER THAN LIFTING THINGS is an insightful, inside look at other sports giants such as John Madden, Arnold Palmer, Joe Paterno, Mickey Mantle, Chuck Noll, and Al Davis, and also includes chapters which detail his special relationships with golf’s two greatest players, Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus.

BETTER THAN LIFTING THINGS is the perfect sports fan gift for any occasion and is available on Amazon in e-book, paperback, and hardcover at www.amazon.com.

A former Steelers beat writer for the Pittsburgh Press, Sheeley describes life around this famous Steelers team of the ’70s, when it won four Super Bowls with players such as Bradshaw, Mean Joe Greene, Jack Lambert, and Fats Holmes, who somehow also won a bizarre co***ne trial in Amarillo, Tex.

“I was really happy to hear that Glenn had decided to complete this book,” Bradshaw says in the foreword. “I knew he’d been working on it for quite some time and I’m glad it’s finally out there for people to see.”

Sheeley continued to follow the NFL after leaving Pittsburgh for Atlanta, eventually covering 17 Super Bowls and hundreds of NFL games.

Pittsburgh fans will love Sheeley’s look at the city he fell in love with, the amazing Rooney family, and Pittsburgh’s wildly unique sportscaster, Myron Cope.

Atlantans will enjoy Glenn’s inside looks at former Hawks coach Hubie Brown, Atlanta Journal legend Furman Bisher, Ted Turner and his Atlanta Braves, and the Falcons.

“Overflowing with Hall of Famers and famous characters,” says best-selling author and Red Smith Award winner Dave Kindred, “Glenn Sheeley’s tale of a sportswriter’s life has us laughing all the way.”

BETTER THAN LIFTING THINGS takes you on an entertaining journey through Sheeley’s 26 years with the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, when he assumed the golf beat in 1994 and covered 32 straight major championships, 10 of them won by Tiger Woods.

Steve Eubanks, author of Augusta: Home of the Masters Tournament, says, “If you miss great writing and want to revisit some classic moments and characters from sports gone by, this book is for you.”

Sheeley takes you to Augusta National, where he covered 20 Masters tournaments, including Nicklaus’ victory in 1986 at age 46, and to the Open Championship, where he walked every step with Nicklaus during Jack’s last trip around St. Andrews in 2005.

One of the nation’s most respected golf writers from 1994-2005, Sheeley covered every U.S. Open and PGA Championship during that period, plus eight Open Championships and several Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup matches.

The late Red Smith, a Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist with the New York Times, called sportswriting “a lot better than lifting things,” and despite decades of missing holidays to make deadlines, Glenn Sheeley could not agree more.

GLENN SHEELEY is a former award-winning sportswriter with the Pittsburgh Press and the Atlanta Journal-Constitution who mainly covered the NFL and golf for 32 years, also making regular appearances on both the Golf Channel and CNN, before leaving newspapers to handle communications and membership sales for two private golf clubs in the Atlanta area. A Hershey, Pa., native and Penn State graduate, Glenn is retired and lives in Ormond Beach, Fla., with his wife, Nora.

06/01/2024

INDIANA, PA, January 6, 2024 (PittsburghNewsWire.com) — It’s a big weekend for youth hockey in Indiana, PA. A total of 19 youth hockey teams, will come together to compete in the 29th annual Charlie Hogan Memorial Tournament. Players will range from 9 to 14 years of age. The man hours put into planning and coordinating this large of an event is extraordinary and it’s all handled by volunteers. Tournament Director, Matt Jackson and Co-Director, Erin Jones, both Indiana Youth Hockey Association (IYHA) board members, lead the efforts that bring together parent volunteers and community support to make it all possible.

This tournament is held in honor of Charlie Hogan, a beloved young hockey player who died unexpectedly in 1994. Charlie’s red #18 Chiefs jersey is retired and proudly displayed at the S&T Bank Arena, home of the Indiana Chiefs.

The tournament generates the funds to allow the IYHA organization to ensure their player fees can stay at a reasonable rate. This encourages players and families to participate for the love of the game, like Charlie did. This tournament was started by Don and Claire Hogan in memory of their son, and still today, they enjoy seeing their son’s memory honored with this tournament each year. Additionally, Charlie’s brothers, Luke and Steve, are now youth hockey coaches and bring their teams to participate in this event, in memory of their brother. Luke, now lives in Louisville, KY but brings his whole team of youth hockey players from Louisville to Indiana, PA. No small feat, but we are so honored that he and the players and families make the trip.

If your team is playing in the tournament, or you just love a good game of hockey, please come out this weekend to support the tournament. With 34 games played over the course of the weekend, you are sure to find at least one to fit your schedule. There are bound to be stories to tell and memories to make for this collection of young players. S&T Arena and the IYHA are excited to welcome so many players and families to the rink and community they call home.

A special thank you to the following businesses for their support of the Charlie Hogan Tournament and the IYHA organization:

Eat ‘N Park, Sheetz, Alexander Strength Development, Smith, Lewis, Chess & Company, Hoss’s Steak and Sea House, Lias Tire, Indiana Schwinn, PJ Greco, Lowes, Papa John’s Pizza, Aroma Joe’s, Hilton Garden Inn, Luigi’s Ristorante, Penn Mechanical Group, Wendy’s, JDH Painting & Flooring, Riziki Café, GreenFire Crossfit, Brunos Italian Restaurant, Colonial Auto Group, Cunningham Meats, Realty One Group, Fenton’s Meats, Marion Center Bank, CDT Insurance Group, Southtowne Motors, P&N Coal, Good & Associates Insurance Solutions, 5th Street Golf, Tres Amigos and Creps (Hi-Tech Color) – Not to mention the personal donations of money, time and resources from the families supporting IYHA.

05/01/2024

HARRISBURG, PA, January 5, 2024 (PittsburghNewsWire.com) — The Pennsylvania LIFE Provider Alliance (PALPA) continues taking proactive steps to promote the significance of the Living Independence For the Elderly (LIFE) program in enhancing the quality of life for seniors across Pennsylvania. As a dynamic and collaborative organization, PALPA is committed to ensuring that seniors can lead healthy, safe, and independent lives in their homes and communities.

As experts grapple with the soaring demand for at-home care and rising rates of social isolation among seniors, the LIFE model emerges as a promising solution. By providing in-home assistance, transportation, personal care, social contact, and nursing care, the LIFE program acts as a safety net for America’s seniors. It not only generates significant cost savings for the healthcare system but also addresses the prevalent issue of social isolation among the elderly.

There are nine LIFE providers serving 54 counties across Pennsylvania. The cornerstone of the LIFE program is the LIFE center where participants receive most of their medical care and can also visit as much as they’d like for socialization and other personal care support. There are 53 LIFE centers located throughout the commonwealth.
PALPA is comprised of seven LIFE providers, LIFE NWPA, LIFE Geisinger, Community LIFE, LIFE Pittsburgh, Lutheran Senior LIFE, Albright Care Services and Mercy LIFE, representing 40 LIFE centers operating across 44 counties. Senior LIFE and InnovAge account for the remaining LIFE providers and centers serving the commonwealth.

The LIFE programs overseen by PALPA offer managed long-term services and support, including medical, social, and personal services. These programs are designed for individuals who need nursing home-level services but prefer the independence of living in the community.

Richard Fish, President of the board of the Pennsylvania LIFE Provider Alliance and CEO of LIFE NWPA, a leading PACE provider, emphasizes the transformative impact of the LIFE program. “The LIFE program is a beacon of hope for seniors, offering not just healthcare services but a community-based solution that keeps aging individuals at home, fostering a sense of independence and well-being.”

By working closely with state authorities, PALPA serves as a powerful advocate, aiming to shape policies that foster the independence and well-being of Pennsylvania’s elderly population. By joining PALPA, stakeholders become part of a collective effort to enhance the quality of life for Pennsylvania’s seniors through the LIFE programs.

PALPA’s dedication extends to education and outreach, as the alliance is committed to raising awareness about the LIFE programs available in Pennsylvania. Through a grant provided by the Lutheran Foundation for Long-Term Living, PALPA aims to inform and engage Pennsylvania seniors, ensuring that those eligible are aware of the valuable services LIFE provides.

About PALPA
The Pennsylvania LIFE Provider Alliance (PALPA) is a collaborative organization dedicated to advancing the Living Independence For the Elderly (LIFE) initiative in Pennsylvania. PALPA works tirelessly to ensure that seniors in the state can live healthy, safe, and independent lives in their own homes and communities for as long as possible. RELEASE AND LAUNCH PARTY DATES FOR THE SECRET OF THE PAINTED STATUE BY ANGELA D. MOSS

PITTSBURGH, PA, December 26, 2023 (PittsburghNewsWire.com) — The Secret of the Painted Statue, the second book in Angela’s middle grade series The Morgan Draca Mysteries, will be released on January 9, 2024.

A launch party celebrating Edgar Allan Poe’s birthday will be held at Riverstone Books, 5841 Forbes Ave Pittsburgh, PA 15217, on January 21, 2024, at 2 PM.

About the book:
Seventh-grader Morgan Draca stumbles into another mystery, this time in Baltimore, Maryland.

Desperate to ace her Edgar Allan Poe assignment, she is thrilled when her mother announces a trip to the city of Poe’s death but perplexed when a painted statue winds up on her doorstep.

Struggling to find what the statue hides, Morgan aims to prove she has what it takes to solve the case…or will an unknown rival beat her to it?

About the author:
Angela D. Moss is an author of travel mysteries—ostensibly for middle grade readers, but secretly for everyone. Her fiction is created under the cover of darkness; while there is a bright shiny orb in the sky, you can find her masquerading as a computer scientist focusing on cybersecurity. If she isn’t in front of a computer, you might find her on an airplane or cruise ship, in a museum, or even taking in the local sights on a pair of rollerskates. From an early age, Angela discovered she adores traveling and is now happy to drag her husband, son, and daughter away from the comfort of their home (and two cats) in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to gather information for future books.

The Secret of the Painted Statue will be released in paperback, hardcover, and Kindle formats. For additional information, please email [email protected].
