Today I started mixing the first of 2 songs and I realised I’d forgotten to post a picture of the crazy mic setup we had going on for guitars.
On the orange amp I dual miced each speaker, the right had a 57 and 421 and the left a C414 and 421 for a slightly different flavour. Then the bass cab had a subkick and an RE20. I made sure the phase was correct between mics and summed them down to 1 channel per speaker and delayed the left by 10ms to give a wide stereo image. It worked really well for well for the shoegazey guitar tones.

I had a cracking few days in Orchard Recording Studios with the guys in Twin City. We got some great guitar tones with the Marshall JCM800 and plenty of guitar options including a really cool Danelectro 12 string. We even got a bit psychedelic with the production on this one! Very awesome songs to listen out for!

I had an incredible couple of days in Orchard Recording Studios over the weekend with Oh william . I had the opportunity to test out some creative engineering techniques that I don’t normally get to try out such as recording vocals through a plastic cup on an SM58 😆 The band is only a 2 piece however they create an incredible ambient soundscape with Gareth’s setup through his baritone guitars, crazy pedal effects and splitting the signal through a 70’s Orange amp and bass amp. I stereo miced the guitar cab, panned the tracks left and right and delayed the right signal by 10ms to create a huge stereo soundscape with only 2 guitar. Definitely keep an ear out for this release in the coming weeks!

Absolute VIBES were had in the studio with Ben Nicholls this weekend. We deadened the drums with some tea towels partly on the drum heads for a really tight and intimate sound which really suited the vibe of the song. Tracking bass in the live room got us the right groove and then Ben added some really nice acoustic, keys and of course vocals!

I just wrapped up a brilliant 4 days with The Leylines at Orchard Recording Studios recording their new EP. They’re a really great band with a lot of different musical elements to their songs which made for a great challenge to engineer and produce, but we came out with some incredible sounding recordings that I’m really happy with 🙌

I’ve had an awesome couple of days in Orchard Recording Studios with my new mates in HollowKin. Absolutely killer metalcore, we had such a fun time building this track up - you’re in for a treat! Cracking guitar tones through the Victory Amps Kraken as well 🙌

I wrapped up my last session of the year at Orchard Recording Studios recording some absolute brutality with my buddies in Grove Warden 🙌 their new songs are absolutely sensational so watch out for them.

Thanks to everybody who’s allowed me to be a part of their project in 2023 🙌 I feel so privileged to be involved in creating music with so many talented people. If you’d have told me 5 years ago that I would be working on music as my full time job I would not have believed you! And the start of 2024 is already set to be the busiest I’ve ever been - let’s go! 💪

I had royalty in the studio over the weekend. The 🐐 literally and figuratively smashed it on some new drum tracks for Royals. The drums sounded great, I’m loving higher tuned snare drums at the moment which really suited the songs. Zero snare dampening as well to really let it sing!

That’s a wrap for 2021! I’ve just finished up my last session of the year with the awesome Marisa And The Moths. Big shout out to all the awesome bands I’ve been privileged to work with this year, here’s to creating more incredible music together in 2022!

I’ve not done one of these in a while so thought I’d share some of the drum sounds and my drum buss on the latest Nights Like Thieves song I’m mixing. Clarity Recordings in San Diego did a great job of tracking these. First up I’m using Slate Digital Virtual Mix Buss which is emulating an SSL console and I’m hitting this pretty hard to round off the peaks of the snare. Then I’m bringing the gain down a little and using some light, Neve style EQ. Next up is the trusty Kazrog True Iron for some saturation. I’ve just tweaked one of the presets on that before hitting the Slate FG-Stress as my drum comp. 2:1 ratio, medium attack, fast release with the filters engaged and I’m getting around 5db compression on the loudest snare hits which glues everything together while still sounding really natural. Then I’m doing a bit more EQ with the Plugin Alliance Maag EQ4 for some low end punch and a bit of brightness, before finally using Joey Sturgis Tones JST Clip to make sure nothing gets out of hand. I’m running 2 parallel channels into this, my compressor is just the Waves Audio CLA-76 slamming the shells for some extra sustain and then a parallel distortion buss where other than some EQ I’m using Soundtoys Devil-Loc followed by a transient designer for some extra texture and distortion mainly on the snare drum. It’s sounding pretty saucy, what do you think?

Friday was a release day for a couple of awesome bands over in the USA that I’ve recently worked with. The awesome Nights Like Thieves Thieves have dropped their second track I mixed and mastered for them called “Trust Fall”. Next up my new mates in Fighting Monsters have released “DWTF” that I again mixed and mastered! Lastly, not from the states but definitely for the metal heads out there, the awesome Black Amethyst are releasing a song from their upcoming album every couple of weeks Their latest single that I mixed called “The Assassin” also came out on Friday. I’ve just wrapped up mixing a new single for the awesome Hollow and thought I’d share a bit of the drum processing going on. We wanted a Loathe / BMTH modern and aggressive drum sound and I’m using a combination of GetGood Drums P IV kit for overheads and a bit of snare with Modern and Massive for the kick, snare and toms. I’ve also blended a couple of Drumforge 1 shot kick and snare samples. . On the drum buss I’m using the Kazrog True Iron for some cool saturation them the Slate Digital FG stress for buss compression which I’ve got blended with the dry signal around 60%. Waves Audio C4 is controlling a bit of the spikey top end as well as the low mids and lows. The tape saturation is then rounding off some more of the transients and adding some fatness before I’m blending some Soundtoys Decapitator for some extra sauce!
