Malamig na nga ang simoy ng hangin, at kasabay ng panginginig ng buto dahil sa papalapit na Pasko ay ang panginginig din ng damdamin ng maraming Pilipino sa harap ng mataas na bilihin at mababang kita. Sa panahong dapat sanaโ€™y nag-uumapaw ang kasiyahan, ang realidad ng kahirapan ay lalong nagiging matingkad para sa mga simpleng manggagawa tulad ni Tatay Into.

๐—ฆ๐—ถ๐—ธ๐—น๐—ผ ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—ž๐—ฎ๐—ต๐—ถ๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—ฝ๐—ฎ๐—ป

Sa isang maliit na palengke sa munisipyo ng Talavera, Nueva Ecija, matatagpuan si Tatay Jacinto Peรฑa, o mas kilala bilang Tatay Into. Sa edad na 68, kasama ang kanyang 65-anyos na asawa, patuloy nilang hinaharap ang hamon ng pang-araw-araw na buhay bilang market vendors. Sa kanilang maliit na puwesto na inuupahan, umaasa si Tatay Into na mabuo niya ang pambayad sa inaasahan niyang 60,000 piso na utang ngayong taon; isinasalaysay din ni Tatay Into ang kanilang paglalakbay sa isang tila walang katapusang siklo ng kahirapan.

โ€œDati kina-cash ko yung isang taon na renta, pero ngayon hindi ko na kaya. Walang kita. Kung ano na lang ang kaya naming tinda, yun na lang, kasi kung mangungutang pa kami at hindi maibebenta, mas lalo lang kaming malulubog sa utang,โ€ ani Tatay Into.

Sa loob ng 24 na taong paglalako, nasaksihan na nila ang tagumpay at pagkalugmok. May mga panahong masagana ang benta, ngunit mas madalas, sapat o kulang pa ang kinikita para sa pang-araw-araw na gastusin. Ayon kay Michael Ricafort, Chief Economist ng RCBC, ang pagtaas ng presyo ng bilihin ay isa sa mga pangunahing dahilan kung bakit marami ang napipilitang mangutang, lalo na ang mga tulad nina Tatay Into na umaasa lamang sa maliit na kita.

๐—ž๐—ฎ๐—ฝ๐—ผ๐˜€ ๐—ป๐—ฎ ๐—ž๐—ถ๐˜๐—ฎ

Kumikita lamang si Tatay Into ng halos 430 piso kada araw โ€“ mas mababa pa sa minimum wage na itinakda para sa rehiyon, na nasa pagitan ng 435 hanggang 550 piso. โ€œHindi namin naaabot yung minimum wage. Minsan nga, naiiyak kami ng asawa ko. Tingnan mo yung tindahan namin, walang katao-tao. Paano ka kikita ng malaki?โ€ dagdag niya.

Sa kabila ng kanilang tiyaga, ramdam nila ang hirap ng kakulangan sa puhunan. โ€œWala na akong tindang canton. Dati, bago mag-Pasko, punung-puno ng paninda ang tindahan namin. Pero ngayon, nung dumating ang ahente ng canton, hindi ako nakabili. Isang libo lang ang pera ko, paano ako bibili ng sapat?โ€ kwento ni Tatay Into.

Ang mataas na puhunan sa paninda at ang pagtaas ng presyo ng mga bilihin ay nagpapahirap sa mga tulad ni Tatay Into na makabawi sa kanilang puhunan. Kailangan nilang ibenta ang paninda sa presyong kikita sila, ngunit madalas, ito rin ang inaarayan ng mga mamimili na hirap din sa buhay.

Ayon sa pinakahuling datos ng Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), ang taunang inflation rate sa Pilipinas ay tumaas sa 2.5% noong Nobyembre 2024 mula sa 2.3% noong Oktubre. Ang pagtaas na ito ay pangunahing dulot ng mga bagyong nakaapekto sa suplay ng pagkain, na nagdulot ng pagtaas sa presyo ng mga bilihin. Ang mataas na presyo ng pagkain at iba pang pangunahing bilihin ay lalong nagpapahirap sa mga tulad ni Tatay Into na umaasa sa kakarampot na kita mula sa araw-araw na pagtitinda.

Sa kabila ng lahat, patuloy na nagpapasalamat si Tatay Into na kahit paano ay may maliit silang tindahan. Sa darating na Pasko, ang simpleng spaghetti at pancit canton ay sapat na sa kanila. โ€œOkay na yun, kasi sa buhay ngayon, lalo na sa hirap ng panahon, napakahirap talaga,โ€ sabi niya.

Ang Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) ay nag-ulat na mayroong 17.54 milyong Pilipino ang nabubuhay sa ilalim ng linya ng kahirapan, na mas mababa ng 2.4 milyon kumpara sa nakaraang survey dalawang taon na ang nakalipas. Ayon sa PSA, ang mga indibidwal ay itinuturing na "mahirap" kung ang kanilang kita ay hindi sapat upang matugunan ang mga pangunahing pangangailangan sa pagkain at di-pagkain.

Ang kwento ni Tatay Into ay salamin ng realidad ng maraming Pilipino. Habang ang ilan ay nagdiriwang ng kasaganahan tuwing Pasko, ang iba naman ay patuloy na nagsusumikap upang maitawid ang araw-araw. Sa kabila ng lahat ng pagsubok, nananatili ang kanilang pag-asa โ€“ isang mahalagang paalala na ang diwa ng Pasko ay hindi lamang nasusukat sa dami ng handa kundi sa tibay ng kalooban at pagmamahalan sa pamilya. ____________________________________________

Hindi ko naman ikamamatay ang sakit ng paa dahil malayo naman sa bituka. Pero itong mga paa na ito ang lumalakbay sa mahabang daan na aking kailangan tawirin sa araw-araw. Pero sila rin ang nagdadala sa direksiyon na aking tatahahakin kung saan labag naman sa aking damdamin.

Malayo sa bituka pero nag iiwan ng marka at pilat na nakaukit na tila ba hindi lang sa likod at paa nagmamarka. Hindi ko naman siguro ikamamatay kung hindi ko hawak ang kamay na tila matagal ko ng inaabot dahil malayo naman sa bituka. Hindi naman mali na isantabi muna ang sarili para sa piliin ang ikabubuti ng nakararami.

Pero may mga oras kung saan tahimik ang gabi at ang tanging nasa isip, โ€œAno kaya ang mangyayari kung sa oras ngayon, pipiliin naman ang sarili? Kaya sa direksiyon na aking hindi nagawang tahakin, sana pag handa na ang paa na muling humakbang at ang likod ay wala ng mabigat na pasan ay pwede pang abutin ang kamay na matagal ng gustong hawakan. Ang pangarap ng isang paslit na nais makamit.

๐—ก๐—˜๐—ช๐—ฆ | Music Fest boosts hype on Lantern Festโ€™s final wave

Concluding the night of this yearโ€™s Lantern Festival, numerous bands, local and national, heightened the vibe of the Sielesyuans at the CLSU Oval Grounds last Wednesday, December 18, 2024.

Opening the music fest was Jan Roberts with his top-music hits โ€˜Hirap Kalimutanโ€™, โ€˜Patlangโ€™, and โ€˜Sagipโ€™, making the crowd all hyped and emotional singing along with him during his time.

Following Jan Roberts was Arthur Miguel, serenading the crowd with his song โ€˜Ghinostโ€™, followed by his rendition of โ€˜Walang Kapalitโ€™, and concluding with his famous songs โ€˜Lihimโ€™ and โ€˜Ang Wakasโ€™.

Concluding the fest of national artist was the band Dilaw, with their songs โ€˜Caloyโ€™, โ€˜Nilalangโ€™, โ€˜Orasaโ€™, โ€˜Uhawโ€™, and โ€˜Janiceโ€™.

Finally, following the fest of national artists was the fest of the local bands named Afterclass, Hence The Lens!, Genesis, and others.

The music fest served as the conclusion of this yearโ€™s Lantern Festival.

๐—ก๐—˜๐—ช๐—ฆ | CEn shines the brightest in Lantern Festival 2024, sweeps multiple awards

The College of Engineering (CEn) dominated the Lantern Festival 2024 held on December 18, bagging multiple awards across major competitions, including the Float Parade, Lantern Making Competition, and Ms. Lantern Serene Empress 2024.

CEnโ€™s float impressed the crowd with its creative use of natural materials, earning first place amid fierce competition from nine colleges.

In the Lantern Making Competition, CEn defended its championship title with a creative design that embodied the true spirit of Christmas, incorporating symbols of love, hope, and technological progress.

Meanwhile, Carina Jaycee Aguilar of CEn secured 2nd Runner-Up in Ms. Lantern Serene Empress 2024, also winning special awards, including Ms. Nuat Thai, Best in Production Number, and Best in Advocacy.

These achievements highlight CEnโ€™s exceptional creativity, teamwork, and dedication, reflecting its unwavering commitment to excellence in the annual festival.

๐—ก๐—˜๐—ช๐—ฆ | Aguilar shines as 2nd Runner-Up in Serene Empress pageant

Carina Jaycee Aguilar of the College of Engineering (CEn) secured 2nd Runner-Up in the Ms. Lantern Serene Empress 2024, held at CLSU Oval today, December 18, captivating the audience with her charm and advocacy.

Meanwhile, the College of Home Science and Industry (CHSI) celebrated a back-to-back crown, while the College of Agriculture (CAg) and another CHSI candidate claimed the 1st and 3rd Runner-Up spots, respectively.

Stunning beauty and intelligence were on full display as this yearโ€™s Serene Empress candidates lit up the stage and energized the crowd.

Aguilar showcased her remarkable presence by bagging both minor and major awards, including Ms. Nuat Thai, Best in Production Number, and Best in Advocacy.

Reflecting on her journey, Aguilar shared that all her hard work, sleepless nights, and tiring moments paid off as she secured a place in the said event.

The event concluded with the crowning of the winners and photo opportunities with the USSC Chairman and judges.

The Central Luzon State University (CLSU) College of Engineering, under the Department of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering (DABE), held a tribute ceremony on December 19 for its new agricultural and biosystems engineers who passed the ABELE 2024. The event, titled "Tribute to New Agricultural and Biosystems Engineers," took place at FPJ Hall at 2:30 PM and celebrated the achievements of CLSU's recent 151 Board passers.

The program commenced with Dr. Roy Searca Jose P. Dela Cruz, Dean of the College of Engineering, delivering the opening remarks, expressing pride in the new engineers and their potential to contribute significantly to the agricultural sector. Dr. Ravelina R. Velasco, Vice President for Academic Affairs also shared an inspiring message emphasizing the importance of innovation and sustainability in the field of agricultural and biosystems engineering and upholding excellence and integrity in their future endeavors

Dr. Claire Marie M. Castillo, DABE's Review Coordinator, officially presented the new engineers as a sign of the university's official recognition. The event also featured testimonies from successful board passers, such as Engineer Jelie B. Ingaran, Engineer. Rogelio Joshua C. Miner III, Engineer. Kimwuel A. Lazo, Engineer. Gabriel Francisco D. Dar, and Engineer. Edjean P. Morales inspired everyone by sharing their journeys, challenges, and achievements that led to their success.

The program concluded with closing remarks by Dr. John Paulo C. Sacdalan, Head of DABE, who congratulated the passers and thanked everyone for their dedication and unwavering support.

The event emphasizes CLSUโ€™s commitment to excellence in agricultural and biosystems engineering, as the institution continues to produce industry-ready professionals contributiโฆng to national and global development.

Shining the brightest among eight other lanterns, the College of Engineering (CEn) reclaimed the championship title in the Lantern Making Competition at the CLSU Lantern Festival on December 18, 2024, successfully defending its first-place win from last year with a remarkable display of creativity and innovation.

The College of Business and Accountancy (CBA) and the College of Science (COS) secured second and third places, respectively.

The winning lantern was a product of hard work, collaboration, and unity among CEn students, reflecting the true spirit of Christmas through symbols of love, hope, and technological advancement integrated into its design.

The College of Engineering Student Council proudly received the award, recognizing the dedication and craftsmanship of Engineering students. Their tireless efforts and unwavering commitment paid off as they celebrated this festive victory with pride.

The College of Engineering (CEn) emerged as the champion in the much-anticipated Float Parade held this morning, December 18, 2024, which commenced from the CLSU Visionary Gate to the CLSU Oval, drawing cheers and admiration from the crowd.

Amid fierce competition from nine participating colleges, the CEn float stood out with its creative use of coconut leaves, coconuts, corn husks, and corn, showcasing the teamโ€™s ingenuity and resourcefulness while captivating spectators with its masterful design and thematic brilliance.

In the overall standings, the College of Business and Accountancy (CBA) claimed the second place, while the College of Agriculture (CAg) secured third place.

Despite enduring four days of intense preparation filled with sleepless nights and challenging moments, CEn demonstrated unwavering passion and determination by transforming sustainable materials into a stunning float that perfectly embodied creativity, teamwork, and precision.

This victory not only highlights the unparalleled creativity and dedication of the College of Engineering but also underscores the collective effort of volunteers, designers, instructors, and organizers who worked tirelessly to bring this masterpiece to life.
