Papas Fritas Releases Revamped Music Video for "Way You Walk" Using AI Animation Technology
Runway ML's Generative AI Technology Breathes New Life into Indie Rock Band's Classic Track
Papas Fritas has unveiled a visually stunning animated music video for their song "Way You Walk," originally featured on their album "Buildings and Grounds" in 2000. The video, which features band members Shivika Asthana, Keith Gendel, and Tony Goddess, utilizes AI technology to create candy colored abstract visuals that enhance the retro-pop tones of the original track
The video was created using cutting-edge AI image processing technology called GEN-1 from Runway ML, under the direction of video director Ross Shain. Shain, who is also an Academy Award-winning technologist and software designer, restored and transformed 20-year-old footage of the band into a unique cell animation style with nods to abstract expressionist lighting and classic Anime aesthetics.
"I've been exploring generative AI technology for image processing and visual effects for a few years, and only recently have the results become good enough for professional creatives," says Shain. "When I got beta access to Runway's Gen-1 technology, I immediately thought of the original hand-animated video we had done for 'Way You Walk' many years ago and wanted to see if AI could enhance the creative process."
While the resulting video and experience have been positive, neither Shain nor Goddess claim to be advocates for AI technology taking over the creative process. "I'm excited that AI can restore and even improve our past audio and video files, but like many other artists, I have concerns about the future of human art and music creation," says Goddess. "As a studio owner and producer, I use technology every day to record and write music, but I'm not interested in a future where robots replace craftsmanship."
"At the moment, there's a lot of promise that generative AI will replace traditional software tools for video and music creation, but I'm cautiously optimistic," says Shain. "This video used AI for the animation process, but it was not a simple automatic process. Runway is doing amazing things, but it's still in the early stages. Some shots required a hands-on approach, and traditional effects, editing, and color grading techniques were used to bring a cohesive look to the entire four-minute video." Shain continues, "In the larger picture, there are still ethical concerns about AI training sets and the ownership of AI-produced content that need to be addressed. We're in uncharted waters at the moment, but I believe that in the right hands, AI can be an empowering tool for visual artists."
