How is it already November. Here’s some words by our publisher Elaine:

When we think about the month of November, two thoughts generally come to mind, Thanksgiving and the beginning of the holiday season. Gratitude tends to be the theme this month, but at times the frenzy of the season gets in the way of us truly appreciating all the good things in our lives.

In the famous words of Ferris Bueller, "Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it".

Here are some ways to find gratitude on a regular basis:
Don't be picky - appreciate everything. There is nothing too small to be grateful for.

Find gratitude in your challenges. Sometimes thinking about difficult experiences can help you nail down what you have to be thankful for.

Express yourself. Remember that when you express gratitude to someone, you get the residual effect of feeling more happy yourself.

•Look for joy and happiness everywhere in your life.
•There is a circular effect of being grateful and happy - being grateful can make you happy, but being happy can also make you grateful.
Don't miss out on life, slow down and savor it, and have a wonderful Thanksgiving.

Are you still looking for a costume idea for the whole family? Here are some fun ideas!

1 Royal Family. You dont necessarly need to dress
as the real life royal family to pull this off. How fun would it be to trick or treat with your little prince(s) and/or princess(es)?

2. Beekeepers + Bees: I was thinking back to when I was a kid and one of my favorite costumes was a bee costume. I was thinking about how that could fit with a family, and then it hit me. Or should I say... stung me.

3 Ranchers + Baby Animals: This is a great idea for families with little kids. Animal onesies are not only easy to find, but there great for bundling up for warmth too.

4. Farmers and pumpkins: babies in pumpkin costumes. Do I need to say any more?

5. Olympic Snowboarders and skier’s: If you’re anticipating a cold Halloween this could be a great option.

6. Astronauts and Aliens: This idea is really cute and you can get creative with face paint and glitter if you want.

7. Angels + Devils: This is just a classic.

8. Ice cream parlor workers and ice cream: The kids can dress up as their favorite ice cream flavor and and you can be creative on how to portrait it!

These ideas are meant to be fairly generic. Most of them work well for a range of ages and they leave room for additional creativity. I hope these give you ideas for this upcoming Halloween. Happy Trick Or Treating!

Hello Friends! Can you believe it’s October. Here are some words from our publisher!
**********************************
When October pokes its head into our lives one of the first things that comes to mind is food! And of course one of the first food items that pops into our minds is pumpkin.
At this time of year, pumpkin flavor emerges in just about every type of food we eat. Sometimes it's fun like a pumpkin latte or pumpkin ravioli. But sometimes it's just plain weird and really makes us question the thought process of some of our fellow human beings. Here are some of the craziest pumpkin flavor additions we may find this time of year:
• Pumpkin Pie Greek Yogurt - it just sounds strange, but could be yummy?
Pumpkin Spice Peeps - really? Let's just keep those peeps for
the Spring.
•Pumpkin Spice Kale Chips - What?! Pumpkin Pie Potato Chips - I guess that's one way to make a
potato chip a dessert.
• Pumpkin Spice Sparkling Water - Lemon, lime, grapefruit, berries - but pumpkin?
• Pumpkin Spice Candy Corn - Some people love Candy Corn, some people hate it, but please leave it alone. For those of us who love it, it's perfect as is.
This is the time of year to challenge yourself to buy a pumpkin flavored food item you wouldn't otherwise try. And maybe instead of it being a trick, it'll become an unexpected treat.

Best,
Elaine Ebner, Publisher

P.S. And if you want to try out the recent campy vampire movie Renfield (streaming on Amazon and Apple and others) with Nic Cage and Awkwafina, you can hear our very own Orindan Leslie Darwin O'Brien on the soundtrack which she recorded at Skywalker.

Here is a great article if you’re looking for different ways to get more protein into your diet. Written by Emily Snider.

People often add meat to their diet when they want to increase their protein intake. The good news is that there are so many other foods that also provide this necessary nutrient. Protein is often talked about a lot in weightlifting culture. Lifting weights breaks down your muscles and adequate protein intake allows for the broken-down muscles to repair themselves and become stronger. Protein is extremely important for athletes, but it's also important for everyone else. Here are a few creative ways to add protein to your diet.

1. Protein packed oatmeal. When you make your oatmeal in the morning, add a little extra water or milk and a scoop of protein powder. You can add chocolate protein powder, pecans, and peanut butter to make it both tasty and protein packed!

2. Use milk instead of water for a smoothie. Milk is full of protein and other important nutrients as well.
3. Cheese please! Add a little cheese on top of your favorite meats and vegetables. This improves the taste and adds some grams of protein.
4. Add some peanut butter! When you grab an apple for a snack, dip it in peanut butter.
5. Trade rice or pasta for quinoa. Quinoa has more protein and is a good way to change things up.
There are tons of ways to add protein and it's possible to make it tasty as well. An easy way to increase your protein without counting grams is to make sure there's at least one protein-rich part of your meal. Have fun trying your new recipes!

Here’s a great article from one of our Expert Contributors. Read how digital dentistry has made huge strides and what this does for patients and dentists.

Dr. Amir Koopah, DDS
Koopah & Koopah, Inc.
*********************************

Researchers have made huge strides in digital dentistry during the past few years. This technology is great for dental patients because it saves them time and helps avoid discomfort.
Dentists can now use digital x-rays and digital scans to fabricate surgical implant guides.
With updated equipment that provides digital scans, it is now much easier to get a precise impression of the teeth. This technology is especially helpful in making well fitting crowns and invisalign trays, as well as determining precise placements of dental implants.
FIRST IMPRESSIONS - BETTER IMPRESSIONS!

For the past few years, impressions were taken manually. A technician would have the patient bite into a tray of a goopy medium, which was then made into a chalky cast at a lab. Inaccuracies frequently occurred because of expansion and shrinkage of the casting material.
Now dentists digitally scan the tooth, then send the scan to the lab. The lab receives the digital impression almost instantaneously and technicians can make the desired restoration from the digital impression. No inaccuracies are introduced, which makes the end result more precise and a better fit for the patient.

If you have questions about digital dentistry please don't hesitate to reach out to your dentist.

Our Charity Spotlight for the August Issue is St. Anthony’s.

CHANGING THRIFTING, PROVIDING JOBS AND KEEPING STUFF OUT OF LANDFILL!

By Leslie Darwin

The mission of St. Anthony's is to pair up the wisdom of elders and the potential of young people in our community. Though consistent mentoring, young people can gain the skills and confidence to become future heart centered change makers.
If you want to clean out your closet, but you don't want your clothes to end up in landfill, then let this team of seniors and youngsters help you!

Donations are sorted, cleaned, photographed and sold online. 100% of the proceeds provide jobs for adults entering the workforce and employment for low-income seniors.
Saint Anthony's is named after the patron saint of lost items. Started by two business partners with more than 30 years of experience running hair salons, Saint Anthony's can help with items you want to pass on to another person who will appreciate them.
Whether it is the garage, attic, or a spare bedroom, the St. Anthony's team of experts will declutter any space, removing (among other goods) spare clothing, shoes, and books. With its crew of intergenerational Orindans - the city's elderly artisans and energetic young folk - St. Anthony's mission is to repair and resell whatever comes in through its virtual and physical storefronts.

If you have questions about St. Anthony's, call (415) 971-6167, or swing by on their Open House Days, at 128 Village Square, Orinda CA 94563.

Best Ways to Prep for the Inevitable Return to the Classroom

Summertime is drawing to a close as the new school year looms closer and closer. This is often the most dreaded time for students as their free time slowly slinks away; I will not pretend to know what parents feel during this time, but I imagine there are some mixed emotions.
There certainly were for me. I missed the social setting and the structure, plus I was (am) a nerd who liked learning, but the homework and stress were never something that I looked forward to, especially as I got older. Once I hit high school, the last few weeks of summer were usually spent finishing up all the reading I had to do (Could I have started it earlier and been relaxed the rest of the time? Of course!
But name a single teenager who does that. We all become experts at procrastinating and cramming things in at the last minute).
There's always the obvious back-to-school prep: buying supplies from the lists teachers provide, getting and comparing schedules, signing up for 42 email blasts on mascot day. But what else can you do to begin on the best note possible? I've been through nineteen different school years - albeit without fully gaining consciousness for the first few - and as I look back, here are some of the things that helped me the most.

DRESS THE PART
The most important thing about starting a new year is to go in with confidence, and I firmly believe that a new outfit is the best way to do it. It doesn't have to be a fully brand new fit, it can just be a cool jacket or fancy top, even a new hair-do, but it's something to spice things up and go into the year feeling good about yourself. l used to spend quite a bit of time thinking about what I wanted to wear on my first day of class (although I admittedly lost steam at some point in college, I probably wore athleisure 99 percent of the time). I tried on different outfits, experimented with makeup, and asked my friends what they were wearing. It felt like a lot was riding on that first impression of the year. The reality is that I don't remember most of my first-day-of-school outfits, and I certainly don't remember anyone else's, so don't put too much pressure on it. It's how you feel in the moment and about starting the school year off on a confident note.

MAKE A PLAN
This advice goes out to the kids who are a bit older and perhaps a bit more future oriented - although I also say it with the caveat of knowing that Lamorinda tends to put a lot of unneeded pressure on students to view everything as merely college prep instead of at face value. That is another topic for another day. But if you are starting to think about life after high school, take some time to plan out how you want the year to go. Maybe you want to tour some colleges, look into SAT prep, research work opportunities for next summer, learn about trade schools. Or maybe there's a cool science convention in town in a few months you want to see, or your favorite author's book signing, or you want to learn a new skill outside of the classroom. There are plenty of things you can start thinking about, especially if you're thinking about higher education. Set realistic goals for yourself at a steady pace so you don't find yourself scrambling to get things done at the last minute. I promise that in the future you will thank you.

TREAT YOURSELF
School is stressful. I am not the first person to say this and I certainly won't be the last. And there's not a lot you can do to get around that.
But what you can do is plan ways for yourself to take a break and get your mind off things. I think everyone should plan at least two to three fun events each semester to have designated time off from whatever you're doing - school, work, stay-at-home-parenting, you name it. A lot of people want to take time to relax, but life often gets busy and you simply can't squeeze it in. But if you purposefully carve out that space ahead of time, you're far more likely to use it. You can always go all out and take a trip somewhere for a week, but that can be difficult in the middle of a semester. There's always daycations or weekend trips though (California provides plenty of great locations), or you can think smaller with concerts, sports games, or spa days.
Whatever it is that you love, make active plans so you can have something to look forward to, instead of constantly being bogged down. Spend time focusing on yourself, connecting with your family, and enjoying the small things in life.

Wow…it’s hard to believe that it’s just a few more days before the kids head back to school. Here are some thoughts about August from our Publisher Elaine…she gives us some things to think about and will hopefully inspire some to try something new!

Dear Readers-

August is an odd month - summer isn't over, but kids head back to school mid-month which cuts into our carefree summer activities and thoughts. School parents' schedules are likely to change and everyone else's may change too as our roads get busier around school start/stop times.
As kids head back to school and we adjust our lives to the school calendar, perhaps it's a good time for parents, non-parents, and empty nesters to think about our own education. Have you thought about going back to school to learn more about a passion, an interest, or a curiosity?
Continuing adult education doesn't have to mean going back to a formal classroom setting. It could be as simple as deciding to do something to expand our minds by visiting a museum once a month, learning a new game to play with friends, or reading a new book genre. Of course more rigorous learning is also valuable, such as learning a new language or how to play an
instrument.
We are fortunate to have many local resources available to us to further our education. Our local libraries are a wonderful resource, the Acalanes Adult Education program is fabulous, and many professors at UC Berkeley allow adults to audit their classes. There are many more organizations that offer programs for just about any interest.
So as school starts again, think about your passions and what drives you. Perhaps adjust your routine to learn something hew in your life. After all, life is about learning, and learning is for life.
Enjoy these last days of summer!

Things have gone swimmingly!
Brad and Emily Allen met in the fall of 2012 during the Master's Swim Program at Orinda Park Pool. That particular fall, Emily's daughters' babysitter, who was also a coach at the pool, was in charge of the adult swim program and encouraged Emily to come to swim. The coach/babysitter placed swimmers in lanes according to ability and Emily was thoroughly confused as to why she kept moving her up in lanes. Emily laughs, "When I landed in the same lane as OPP's Head Coach without having the swimming skills to be in that lane, I realized that our coach knew exactly what she was doing! Brad and I became swim friends and then at the end of the swim program, he asked me out on a date to a Warriors game. He asked for my girls' blessing and proposed to me on Christmas Eve in 2014.
We were married at the end of May 2015 at the Schnugg Family home in Stinson Beach with the girls by our side. On our five-year anniversary, Vivi said. 'It's pretty much all our anniversary because that's when we became a family."
The family lives in the Glorietta area of Orinda. Emily says, "We love this neighborhood. It's a short commute to OIS and Miramonte. It's great to take our dog Winnie for walks and run into neighbors walking their own dogs or playing with their kids in their yards. We can walk to friends' houses. With the windows open, we can hear recess at Glorietta during the school year, and on the rare occasions when we aren't at a swim meet during the summer, we can hear the cheers from a Meadow swim meet."

Emily, who serves as the Executive Director of Orinda Network for Education, (ONE) comes from a long line of generosity. She says, "I truly believe fundraising and community work are in my blood. I remember being a small child when my dad founded the Family House at Children's Hospital Oakland. He instilled in me a commitment to always give back to the community. I watched my parents do this on a personal and professional level for decades and it truly stuck with me. I started my career fundraising, and over time, my expertise in relationship-building and partnerships became more impactful when the mission was community-focused, which also coincided with my personal mission to give back to the community."
Emily's fundraising career started at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, where she raised money for the annual fund, as well as the capital campaign for the rebuilding of the de Young Museum. She took a short break from fundraising after she left her position as VP of Development at Special Olympics, Northern California to focus on recovering from Lyme disease. Once healed from Lyme disease, she found herself in the world of wine education and working for a French Château during COVID. Emily explains, "As fabulous as that job was, and while it was exciting to work on a global scale, watching Brad continue his own work with the Orinda community with his math tutoring business and as Head Coach of OPP, I realized how much I missed this community. With our girls getting older, I knew I wanted to focus in and not out. When the Executive Director position at Orinda Network for Education (ONE) opened up, I knew this was exactly what I was looking for."
She continues, "As a parent of two Orinda students, I've seen the positive impact that their educational experience has had on our lives. Because our school districts are among the lowest funded in the state and the funding gap continues to grow, the support from our community ensures the continuation of the key academic programs and services that our schools are known for. I know that the opportunities my children have had are due to this extra funding from the community as a whole. I am thrilled to now give back to our community and serve our schools in this capacity. When people think of public school funding, they don't necessarily think about the community as a whole. One of the most inspiring aspects of my first year at ONE has been watching the entire community come together to support our schools. Our superintendents, our school district board members, school principals, ONE Board members, Parents' Club members from all six schools, school families, city council members, alumni families, and Orinda's business and community members...it's truly a community effort. And that is what makes our community so special.
I am proud that our Orinda schools truly bring the entire community together."
She further clarifies the impact of ONE, "While Orinda's parcel tax revenue is used toward attracting and maintaining quality teachers, and bond measures are reserved for the upgrade of our buildings to keep them modern and safe, ONE raises funds to advance the academic experience beyond what is possible with public dollars alone. ONE impacts every student from Transitional Kindergarten through 12th grade. Donations to ONE fund the arts, music, science, library, technology, enrichment programs, wellness, PE, smaller class sizes, middle school electives, as well as high school classes and programs."

HOBBY JOB/JOB HOBBY?
Emily says that sometimes it's hard for her to define the line between a job and a hobby when it comes to community support.
"Whether I was professionally fundraising or not, I still found myself immersed within this community, volunteering as the Board President at TOPS, running the fundraising and volunteer programs for our pool, or managing the office at St. Mark's Nursery School."

FAMILY FIRST
"A lively conversation over a good meal is my favorite way to spend time with people," she says. Her hobbies have changed slightly as her daughters have gotten older. She reflects,
"Seeing how quickly time moves, I try to be mindful of my time away from home. The four of us love watching movies together and while we were able to have Friday Family Movie Nights every week during Covid, it's a bit harder now with high school social schedules, but we still try to get a couple of movie nights on the books each month."

Emily enjoys going on walks with Brad and the dog, saying, "It's one of the only chances we get to focus on ourselves and conversation due to our opposite schedules. No phones, just chatting."
Emily and Brad are huge Warriors fans. They both grew up in families who loved the Warriors no matter what their standing. She says, "It's been fun to watch the girls become fans over the years. Brad goes to one game a season and while he used to ask me to go with him, he now takes one of the girls. I love that they are able to experience the games in person with him."
Brad grew up in Orinda, and attended Sleepy Hollow, OlS, and Miramonte. Vivi and Gemma have had a few of the same teachers that Brad and his siblings had!
Emily's eyes twinkle, "The four of us love to laugh and make each other laugh. We argue over who is the funniest in the family.
Brad likes to think he's won the title but it's definitely split between us gals."

GREAT GALS -- GEMMA AND VIVI
Gemma just graduated from Miramonte and is heading to Washington, DC where she'll attend American University and be a participant in its Politics, Policy, and Law Scholars Program. A natural-born leader, Gemma would like to attend law school and pursue a career that will allow her to fight for people's legislative rights or amplify people's stories. During the summer of 2020, she saw a need within her student community and founded a social justice group that was committed to curriculum reform. During her time at Miramonte, she was the Head of the Curriculum Commission and was involved in Leadership and Peer Tutoring.
Vivi is a rising sophomore at Miramonte. During her first year at MHS, she discovered her interest in history. Vivi joined the Stunt Cheer team this past spring and found a wonderful and supportive group of friends on the team. She will be cheering on the Varsity Sideline Cheer team this fall.
Vivi is a compassionate friend and family member, always checking in on people. A social butterfly, Vivi loves spending time with her friends. She is great with little kids (She learned at a young age with all of her cousins!) and enjoys coaching the Mini-Stingers at Park Pool and babysitting.

ORINDA PARK POOL
When Brad and Emily lived in the Claremont area of Orinda, they joined Orinda Park Pool. Emily shares, "It's been great fun not only watching the girls spend their summers at the pool, making lifelong friends, but seeing other kids grow up over the years and come back to visit after they've long graduated and started their adult lives. It's been a joy being part of this special community. Brad started swimming at Park Pool when he was 4 years old. Last summer the pool community, past and present, celebrated his 25th anniversary of coaching there. Our summer family is at the pool." FAMILYMOON - MAIS, OUI!
When Brad and Emily got engaged, the girls asked where they were going to honeymoon. Emily says, "We decided to take a "Familymoon" to Disnevland before going on our honeymoon to Paris, which we ended up taking a couple of years later. We missed the girls so much while we were on our honeymoon that we decided we needed a Parisian trip with them. In December 2019, the four of us landed in Paris. That was a fabulous trip altogether!"
Emily shares, "We don't take a vacation every year so when we do, we try to make them as special as possible. The last couple of vacations we have taken have been to tour colleges, so we were happy to spend our Spring Break in Mexico with no itinerary. We spent the week with Brad's family. there were 18 of us in total (6 kids under the age of 7) in one house! While most of the cousins live in the Orinda area, it was great to have everyone together, especially for Gemma who is trying to soak up as much cousin time as possible before she leaves for DC. We are looking forward to our family trips to DC to visit Gemma!"

EMILY'S LIST OF FAVORITES
She says, "I don't necessarily have a favorite one of anything but more of the top five favorites for categories (I actually have a Pinterest board of top fives!). It's a dynamic list and fun to revisit. A new top five favorite book for me that I read earlier this year is Still Life by Sarah Winman. As an art history major, I was immediately interested but it was the stories of the individual characters who, through their kindness and humanity toward one another, became a family that captured me. I haven't read a book like this in a long time and it was so refreshing for the heart and soul and left me filled with hope. One I'll reread over the years."

ORINDA IS A ONE-DERFUL TOWN
Finally, Emily wants to shout out, "Thank your Parents' Club volunteers!
Our work at ONE is a true collaboration with the Parents' Clubs at each school site. These volunteers are our boots on the ground and I am so grateful for everything they do for our schools!
As someone who is very familiar with the amount of support given by our local small businesses and the effect that has on the community as a whole, I say thank you!!"
