After 69 issues, the team behind Switch Player called it a day. We also made Ninty Fresh, which ran for eight successful issues.. Dreaming of something bigger and more glorious, we toiled away behind the scenes, hoping to curate something premium and deluxe, but that would see a longer release cycle. Sort of like an annual, but with a magazine style approach. That project is what we now call Ninsight. A premium print publication bursting with Nintendo insight. If you loved the Switch Player Magazine, Ninty Fresh Magazine and/or Gamebook: The Unofficial DMG Companion, then you will LOVE this.
As part of this experimentation process, we are producing a limited run first issue where we can show you what we are thinking, but also take on your feedback to shape the future of the project. This first test issue will be 180+ pages, will be a split between new, current content for the Switch as well as some retrospectives and analysis of legacy Nintendo content. It'll feature reviews, but these will be presented in far more depth and will be more spectacular than before. It'll also have a smattering of bespoke artwork alongside informative retrospectives and op-ed features too.
You can expect detailed and in depth reviews for everything that's launched since the last Ninty Fresh/Switch Player, which will be led by some huge Super Mario Wonder coverage, among other huge titles. We will have some fantastic retrospectives on older consoles and even plan a feature to celebrate 40 years of the Famicom! We will also look at some of the titles coming to the Switch in the future, but from a more timely and future proof analytical view, as well as interviews with some fantastic developers.
It'll also be much bigger than Switch Player, coming in at 280mm by 210mm and will be finished on deluxe uncoated paper stock too, and will come in two versions - a standard version with just the book as well as a deluxe package with loads of extras! Unlike Switch Player or Ninty Fresh, it'll be case-bound, meaning it will look and feel like a book, but will retain that familiar magazine style that we were known for. Very much a premium bookazine!
What you'll get!
Standard Edition - you'll get the issue zero of Ninsight in a hard cover, case bound finish, and it will also be finished with a limited edition obi strip, which will be numbered.
Deluxe Edition - you'll get the issue zero of Ninsight in a hard cover, case bound finish, which will also be finished with a limited edition obi strip, which will be numbered. You'll also get a selection of five deluxe art prints from the issue, get your name in the book as a sponsor as well as a digital copy of the issue and a special commemorative bookmark. If that's not all, you'll also get a folded poster of the cover artwork, oh, and a special, Super Mario Wonder themed pin badge. We love making little pin badges for these!
Why the change?
We decided (and needed) to make this change because although demand for Switch Player was still strong, rising costs as well as the time investment made it unviable. By transforming what we do into this new model, we can afford to produce something more impressive, reduce both our costs as well as those to the reader (be decreasing frequency, cutting out higher postage costs) and have something more long-lasting and timely. Like a Nintendo themed time-capsule!
