Chinabot is a platform and collective created to change the dialogue surrounding Asian music. Why? In the most literal sense: we want to make a new stereo-type.

In 2017, a digital diaspora community of Asian artists decided to cooperate on a new way to collect and promote exciting Asian music. We want to show a slice of what we like, the cultures we come from and our own ideas. tween the influence of Asian music on contemporary sounds and the development of experimentation. We work with composers, sound artists, improvisers and musicians to develop projects that rearrange the furniture of the musical world. We want to question our assumptions about what music is and where it can go. People are often fed a singular image of ‘Asian music’, but each of our cultures is varied and complex. Even in 2017, realistic portrayals of Asians are still thin on the ground in the West, throughout cinema, television, literature, music and theatre too. We are smothered by the stereotype of the uncreative, robotic worker, and labeled as ‘Chinese’ no matter where in the continent we are from. By continuing the dehumanization of Asians onscreen and in popular culture, it dehumanizes us in real life. Racism against Asians is not only ignored, but often accepted, unacknowledged or even encouraged. We want to break silences, which are often also encouraged our own culture, in order to push the public to take a closer look at racial inequality towards Asians. People have always moved around the world, bringing their traditions, knowledge, and beliefs with them, and often mixing them with those of their new homes. For many people, their migrations and those of their ancestors are important in shaping both their personal identities and the art they produce. Chinabot is a space for Asian artists to play with their ideas and cultural hybridities. By doing so we hope to create another narrative in contemporary music from Asia and its diaspora.

NEO GEODESIA’s sophomore album ‘Oknha Stamina’ out 14.04 [CHI056]

Dream Team of Preah Khan imagines the story of the magical Khmer royal sacred sword which disappeared during the pre-Khmer Rouge period, was considered the symbol of Khmer sovereignty and legitimacy to the throne. Shortly before its disappearance during the 1970 coup d’etat.

It was started in Kep, which was once a popular retreat for the French colonial elite, and still holds a community of older French expats with a strong nostalgia for French Indochina.

Rich in symbolism, it draws inspiration from the women reclaiming power through sport despite cultural taboos, from Khmer wrestler Chov Sotheara to Les Hijabeuses which advocates for the rights of Muslim women to wear hijab while playing football.

Recalling both Battambang’s bat cave, and the saga of the Thai boy’s football team getting trapped in a cave. Precious Angkor Wat bas reliefs, likely stolen during colonial times, reflect themes of cultural loss and historical theft, setting a tone of tension between preservation and destruction.

Reflecting recent repatriation of stolen artworks. An Apsara dance celebrates entertainment for the elite, intertwined with references to French colonial history - the first Apsara performance in the West was at a French colonial exhibition.

A portrait of André Malraux, the French art critic and minister of culture, is seen; Malraux was discovered to have smuggled bas reliefs from Angkor Wat to France but had his jail sentence suspended after a high profile campaign by France’s cultural elites. In Nancy, France, where Vong grew up in a large community of Cambodian refugees, his local cultural centre was named Centre Culturel André Malraux in his honour.

Symbols of modern Cambodian identity, including garment workers and protests against corrupt industry practices.

The video interweaves themes of cultural resilience, colonial legacy, environmental crisis, and contemporary identity, set against a soundscape that underscores the layered symbolism of Cambodia’s past, present, and future.
