Chinabot Chinabot is a platform and collective created to change the dialogue surrounding Asian music. Why? In the most literal sense: we want to make a new stereo-type.

In 2017, a digital diaspora community of Asian artists decided to cooperate on a new way to collect and promote exciting Asian music. We want to show a slice of what we like, the cultures we come from and our own ideas. We’re an online community and a virtual home celebrating the music that falls between the gaps -- a place for adventurous listening. Chinabot is positioned at the junction point be

tween the influence of Asian music on contemporary sounds and the development of experimentation. We work with composers, sound artists, improvisers and musicians to develop projects that rearrange the furniture of the musical world. We want to question our assumptions about what music is and where it can go. People are often fed a singular image of ‘Asian music’, but each of our cultures is varied and complex. Even in 2017, realistic portrayals of Asians are still thin on the ground in the West, throughout cinema, television, literature, music and theatre too. We are smothered by the stereotype of the uncreative, robotic worker, and labeled as ‘Chinese’ no matter where in the continent we are from. By continuing the dehumanization of Asians onscreen and in popular culture, it dehumanizes us in real life. Racism against Asians is not only ignored, but often accepted, unacknowledged or even encouraged. We want to break silences, which are often also encouraged our own culture, in order to push the public to take a closer look at racial inequality towards Asians. People have always moved around the world, bringing their traditions, knowledge, and beliefs with them, and often mixing them with those of their new homes. For many people, their migrations and those of their ancestors are important in shaping both their personal identities and the art they produce. Chinabot is a space for Asian artists to play with their ideas and cultural hybridities. By doing so we hope to create another narrative in contemporary music from Asia and its diaspora.

'Sipaningkah (Aldo Ahmad) is a jack-of-all-trades from West Sumatra, performing with Total Perkusi and the Bandung Philharmonic Orchestra, as well as spearheading experimental electronic music collective Pasamoan Art Initiated and making his own instruments. Langkah Suruik combines his artistic oeuvre into an otherworldly album that heavily features his homemade instrument the Tasauf, a fusion of the tasa drum, talempong kettle gong, and rabab darek. Processing the metallic tones of the Tasauf through dubwise reverb and sequenced cascades, Sipaningkah challenges any preconceived notion of what Indonesian music might sound like.'

Liew Niyomkarn to artystka dźwiękowa i kompozytorka z Tajlandii mieszkająca w Brukseli, której twórczość eksploruje pamięć, przestrzeń i czas za pomocą dźwięku. Jej prace, obejmujące zarówno instalacje, jak i występy na żywo, powstają w wyniku połączenia eksperymentalnych praktyk słuchania z nagraniami terenowymi, głosami (ludzkimi i nieludzkimi), tekstem i brzmieniami codziennego życia. W swojej muzyce Liew łączy bogatą paletę dźwięków z właściwościami akustyki przestrzeni, tworząc mantryczne i głęboko immersyjne kompozycje.

„Czuję się jakbym żyła różnymi życiami i staram się nadać sens moim podróżom, wiesz? W tej chwili skupiam się na słuchaniu i dostrajaniu się do długich dźwięków, harmonii, a nawet odkrywaniu tekstu i słów w dźwięku. Bruksela jest bardzo niedoceniana – to takie fajne miejsce do życia! Liew Niyomkarn is a sound artist and composer based in Brussels, Thailand, whose work explores memory, space and time through sound. Her work, which includes both installations and live performances, is created by combining experimental listening practices with field recordings, voices (human and non-human), text and the sounds of everyday life. In her music, Liew combines a rich sonic palette with the qualities of space acoustics to create mantric and deeply immersive compositions.

It feels like I’ve lived different lives, and I’m trying to make sense of my journeys, you know? Right now, I’m all about listening and tuning into sustaining long sounds, harmonics, and even exploring text and words in sound. Oh, and Brussels is so underrated—it’s such a fun place to live! There are so many amazing musicians and artists here who inspire me.

IN THE SUN announces new album with a new single 'Voidance' https://chinabot.bandcamp.com/album/dawn Pounding traditional drums and grinding synths herald Dawn, the new album from post-industrial Tokyo duo IN THE SUN, their first release on Chinabot. Dawn was inspired by the musical traditions and wild mountain landscapes of composer TIDEPOOL’s childhood in rural Japan. Layers of ethereal synthesizers and wailing saxophones by Kim Pueru evoke the mist and granite of mountains are beaten with rhythms that hit like shattering rocks. The record “embodies a fusion of synthetic and percussive elements, evoking both mysticism and raw energy,” says TIDEPOOL. “The juxtaposition of dystopian undertones and the resilience of nature serves as a thematic backdrop, reflecting on societal shifts and personal introspection.” Dawn’s instrumentation may be inspired by Japanese taiko drums and African percussion, but it remains extremely contemporary, with swirling rhythms of singeli, juke, footwork, gabber, and minimal to create an evil cacophony. The album also nods to the GORGE movement, which is experiencing a resurgence in Japan. TIDEPOOL describes the record as an “epic poem.” This is evident on Twilight, where urgent synths and nimble per- cussion makes you wonder what Akira would have looked like set in on a mountain range instead of in Tokyo. On Voidance, bells, drums and saxophone are whipped up onto a violent storm which builds and crashes repeatedly, a powerful statement of intent from one of Tokyo’s most exciting contemporary acts.
