“Hot and hard work,” Melissa Bobka called it, “but so fulfilling when almost immediately I was able to give a woman in need of clothing a bag of jeans that I thought would fit her. Then a family showed up, and I invited them into the truck to ‘shop’ for what they needed. They were homeless and needed sleeping bags, blankets, personal hygiene items, clothing, etcetera. Even through this terrible situation I saw beauty in humanity."

According to the sheriff’s office, deputies are looking for video footage or other information related to a suspected arson incident in the area of Mockingbird Drive and Sparrow Road in Waconia around 2 a.m. Friday morning.

A suspected case of arson is under investigation by the Carver County Sheriff’s Office.

The first burial at the location was in 1857, but until now there was no record of who or where people are buried. Last month, however, that changed when a cemetery directory was completed and erected at the site.

The county’s preliminary tax levy will increase by 8.9 percent compared to 2024. The actual tax increase on the county’s average value home ($472,000) will be 4.6 percent, or $65 annually. The levy cannot increase, but it could decrease when the board approves the final 2025 levy in December.

The Carver County Board of Commissioners approved the 2025 preliminary tax levy at its Tuesday, Sept. 3 meeting.

There were no further public comments at the continued hearing, and with the state’s early selection process proceeding slowly, most commissioners agreed to the moratorium on cannabis businesses to the end of the year. The vote was 4-1.

Like many other cities and counties in the state, Carver County will enact a moratorium prohibiting any cannabis business in the county until the end of the year. That decision
