Do you disclose your alcoholism or recovery at parties? How do you explain why you're abstaining?

It's hard to know how to talk about addiction. But sometimes it isn't so much what we say, but how we show up, sober and accountable. We can ask ourselves: What message do I want to carry?

“ is a complete distraction from what needs to happen, which is that services must be provided. Listening to ‘grammers talk about depression and anxiety or hashtagging is not going to solve that problem. [And] when the response to a 'mental health' share on social media is positive, people then rely on it as if it is a form of therapy - which it isn't.”

Helping or hindering?

Can you relate? What helped you in early sobriety? ⠀

For the New Year, we're looking for stories of Transition. Think about a time where you overcame something huge in sobriety (like finding a job, going back to school, or losing someone close to you). Your story is worthy. Share it with us here: https://buff.ly/2OwoLWS

"Drinking per se and high-volume drinking were consistently more prevalent among men than among women, but lifetime abstention from alcohol was consistently more prevalent among women. Among respondents who had ever been drinkers, women in all age groups were consistently more likely to have stopped drinking than men were." ⠀

Interesting, right? Men drink more than women but women tend to stay sober be more outspoken about their sobriety or recovery overall - especially on social media.⠀

I couldn't shake this idea off so I reached out to Austin Cooper to ask him what he thought about all this. ⠀

Why does it always feel so impossible or weird to say these words? What's with the judgment, shock, and awe?

Someone actually said to me this past weekend after I said I just didn't feel like drinking, "Who doesn't feel like drinking? I've never felt that. But maybe I'm an alcoholic."

Maybe you are - maybe you're not. That's up to you.

After the anger and frustration disappeared, I realized: it really doesn't matter what other people think about your choice to be sober. It's your life, your choice.

Maybe one day you'll be proud to say these words: No thanks, I don't drink. I hope I will.

I love being able to say that when asked if I want an alcoholic beverage. I say it in a nice way with a smile on my face. I think to myself that alcohol is not part of my health regimen, much like how fast food isn’t either. It doesn’t serve me any good. It doesn’t bring value to my life. Even if I didn’t have an addiction to alcohol, I am so focused on bettering my heath, both physical and mental, that drinking the powerful, mind altering drug called alcohol would not fit in with my goals. I feel empowered by turning down alcohol and prioritizing my long term goals instead. I hope this mindset can find the right person today. ❤️

"I feared rejection and I think that was one of the biggest things that kind of made me apprehensive to become open about my recovery. I was just fearful of rejection. I think another one is I was afraid that I wouldn't be able to get a job if employers found out that I had an addiction. I think my own stigmas towards recovery and addiction are what really made me apprehensive."⠀

You know who said that? Austin from Sober-Evolution. Just goes to show what you can accomplish when you just do it and see what happens. ⠀
