WORLD PRESS CARTOON 2024

Establishing a sustainable agreement with a main sponsor proves to be a difficult objective to achieve when the decision is not to compromise with the quality standards that have made World Press Cartoon an unavoidable reference among salons around the world. Once again, the World Press Cartoon Board found itself without the means to launch a call for participation in its main event, meaning that the global community of cartoonists will not have this privileged meeting point in 2024.

The history of World Press Cartoon is a guarantee of the organization's commitment to defending the values we share around freedom of the press and the promotion of cartoons as an indispensable genre in reference journalism and we are grateful for the support of all the cartoonists who have contacted us, with words of encouragement that give us strength to continue.

We do not lower our arms, remain alert. World Press Cartoon will be back as soon as possible, stronger than ever!

WORLD PRESS CARTOON 2023

As previously informed, an unexpected decision by our main sponsor of the last six years has left the World Press Cartoon Board without the means to launch, in the autumn, as is tradition, the call for participation at the following year's contest.

Regrettably, arriving at the time of year when our International Jury meets, we can only confirm that there are no financial support conditions that allow us to hold the event this year, within the standards of rigor and quality that have always characterized World Press Cartoon. It will therefore be, since 2005, the second time that the world community of cartoonists does not have this privileged annual meeting point.

We believe that the history of World Press Cartoon is a guarantee of the organization's commitment to defending the values we share around freedom of the press and the promotion of cartoons as an indispensable genre in reference journalism. We appreciate the support of all the cartoonists who have contacted us, with words of encouragement that raise awareness and give us the strength to proceed.

A few years ago, after participating as a member of the World Press Cartoon jury, the brilliant cartoonist Adam Korpak wrote: «I would say that cartoonists with ability and talent have the power of the small drops of water that, by their persistent action, can break the hardest stones.» It is with this spirit and the same persistence that we promise to return with World Press Cartoon in 2024.

THE WORLD PRESS CARTOON WINNERS WILL BE ANNOUNCED
AT THE OPENING OF THE EXHIBITION

Once again, World Press Cartoon takes place in the city of Caldas da Rainha, thanks to the hospitality of its municipality, at a time of transition of ruling powers. The circumstances of this transition have meant that, in 2022, we did not have sufficient financial means to carry out the traditional prize-giving ceremony, forcing us to comply with only the minimum: the prizes, an exhibition and its catalogue.

The exhibition will be open to the public on the 28th of May, at the Caldas da Rainha Centro Cultural e Congressos, until the 28th of August.

The prizes will be announced at the inaugural act of the exhibition and publicized through the usual channels: press and World Press Cartoon website and social networks pages.

The catalogue will go on sale the same day and will be sent to the participating artists, as is tradition, in the following weeks.

Trophies and cash prizes will be delivered to the winning artists via express mail and bank transfers.

We are certainly disappointed not to have an awards ceremony in 2022, in our 17th edition, but we are convinced that everything will be done to return in 2023 with the full celebration of creativity, freedom and humour as the essence of the World Press Cartoon.

CALL FOR PARTICIPATION

2022 is the year of the 17th edition of the World Press Cartoon which once more will take place in the Portuguese town of Caldas Rainha. The salon continues to offer an appealing structure of 10 prizes, including a Grand Prix of 10.000 Euros. We maintain the high standards of rigour and quality that have made us the salon of reference for press graphic humour.

At a particularly difficult period for journalism worldwide, in a time of multiple crisis in Media, Health, Economy and Politics, the World Press Cartoon goes on being a beacon for freedom of expression. As always, distinguishing, exhibiting, spreading out and rewarding the best editorial cartoons, gag humour drawings and caricatures from different cultures is our aim.

The World Press Cartoon is therefore the salon that professional cartoonists must not miss!

Almost a thousand works arrived at our headquarters, coming from all parts of the world. As always, the task of the Jury will be very difficult: a large number of works from different cultures and an increasing quality. Usually, the jury meets at the end of February, in Caldas da Rainha, Portugal. The restrictions imposed under the control of the pandemic forced the organization to postpone the Jury meeting. It will take place as soon as these restrictions are lifted.
