103 albums walked in(to my ears). Only 1 can come out on top.

Over the course of 2024 I consumed one hundred-and-three albums (released December last year to November this, as usual), all in a quest to put myself in the best possible position to give a reasonably worthwhile opinion on the very best.

Tune in from 1300 GMT/0800 EST/1400 CET to listen to the crème de la crème of the last twelve months' heavy music. Fiends, Revenants, Chupacabras, lend me your fears!

I shall be unable to do Metal Empire this Wednesday, however, that doesn't mean it won't be happening. My new, pallid, friend, Baron Fredrik Von Carnstein has agreed to present the entire show in my stead. Though from the incredibly obscure region of Metallonia, the Baron speaks near-perfect English and has assured me he's more than familiar with the creatures of the night, thus is perfectly suited to host a Halloween special. He's lined up a feast of the most horrific heavy metal and repulsive rock concerning all manner of scary subjects as well as a terrifying Triple Triumph. Von Carnstein has also said he wants to hold a blood drive for a "very worthwhile cause" but has refused to elaborate further, so please be cautious if he asks you to donate any of your claret.

Today we pay tribute to King Paul I, the original recorded lead singer of Iron Maiden. The group that we know and love today, indeed that has shaped heavy metal and me as a person and is a large part of why Metal Empire exists, would not be what or where it is without the contributions of Paul Di'Anno. In honour of Paul, who died on Monday at the unfair age of 66[6], I'll be playing cuts from the first two Maiden albums, Iron Maiden (1980) and Killers (1981), a pair of stone cold classics released less than a year apart over four decades ago.

There will also be a Triple Triple (one song, three versions, you pick the winner and no prizes for guessing the inspiration ahead of time), other great hard 'n' heavy hits and plenty of chuntering with the chatroom regulars... and new people, if you'd like to join?

R.I.P. to a heavy metal legend, Paul Di'anno, original lead singer of Iron Maiden. No Di'anno, no Maiden.

I've extolled many times on my show how good their first two albums, Iron Maiden (1980) and Killers (1981) are, largely thanks to his presence. Only the other week, thanks to a Triple Triumph, was I raving about how his voice gives a really working class, p***y, almost London barrow boy attitude to those records.

Iron Maiden and Killers still rank among the very finest of that band's prodigious discography and are among my most replayed, personally.

He had a storied career as a solo artist and with other bands, but for me, I'll always remember him for giving me two albums-worth of some of the very best music I'll ever hear in my life.

Give a salute to a heavy metal legend and blast out Wrathchild, Murders In The Rue Morgue, Phantom of the Opera, Running Free, Charlotte the Harlot and the whole bleeding lot of them.

Together forge a Metal Empire

The exact moment when RJ knew that heavy music was meant for him was doing his paper round, before school, when the DJ played GN’R among a sea of noughties pop toss. It probably helped his love of radio too.

While his day job is using his English voice as an audiobook narrator, VO artist and sound designer, he’s spent half a decade involved with internet and FM radio from his Edinburgh home. He’s been a weekday talk-show host on local radio and a reviewer and traffic and travel presenter on national stations, but his passion is for bringing unique heavy metal music, interviews, discussion and waffle to the people.

RJ presents Metal Empire, bringing you the more melodic side of metal, be it vintage Sabbath or modern Amarth. Expect to hear traditional, symphonic, thrash, a dash of folk and a dollop of unusual metal with plenty of European artists.
