The Reading and Signing of the
Declaration of Independence At Historic Washington State Park
Saturday, July 4-6, 2024
Admission is Free

Next month, Americans around the globe will enjoy the July 4th festivities with a celebratory spirit. Homes and attire will be clothed in vibrant red, white and blue while BBQs unite friends and families over classic feasts. Daytime parades will fill the streets, leading to the culmination of fireworks illuminating the night sky.

Interestingly, the celebrations in 19th-century Washington were remarkably similar to today's jubilations. Independence Day was a defining feature of Washington life, showcasing barbecues, readings of the Declaration of Independence, stirring speeches and an array of patriotic activities. These events were often set in the groves surrounding the town, drawing crowds from far and wide. Standing in the shade of the midsummer sun by Washington's magnificent trees, people from all walks of life—rich and poor, professionals, farmers, mechanics and laborers—would gather to mingle and discuss current affairs. Afterward, they would indulge in a sumptuous feast of roast oxen, pigs, potatoes and other delights.

These gatherings were joyful and enriching, and, as residents say, left everyone feeling happier and more content with themselves and the world. So, as you enjoy the holiday weekend next month, Historic Washington State Park invites you to join us for our July 4th, 5th and 6th readings and signing of the Declaration of Independence, just like our forebearers did. While you're here, look at many of the other happenings around the park.
