Local Students Awarded Military Legacy Scholarships from McDaniel College
WESTMINSTER, MD (11/12/2024)-- McDaniel College has awarded select freshmen and transfer students with Military Legacy Scholarships valued at up to $132,000, or $33,000 annually over four years, for each student.

Local students who received the Military Legacy Scholarship from McDaniel College include:

Kaitlyn Anthony of Salisbury (21801). Anthony is a graduate of James M. Bennett High School.

Ben DeJesus of Salisbury (21804). DeJesus is a graduate of Wicomico High School.

All military veterans, active-duty military personnel, and their children can apply for this guaranteed scholarship to attend McDaniel College. There is no limit to the number of Military Legacy Scholarships awarded annually by McDaniel.

Zachary Layton of Delmar Awarded Educator's Legacy Scholarship from McDaniel College
WESTMINSTER, MD (11/12/2024)-- McDaniel College has awarded Zachary Layton of Delmar (19940) with an Educator's Legacy Scholarship valued at up to $132,000, or $33,000 annually over four years. Layton transferred from Delaware Technical and Community College: Owens.

Students with a parent or guardian with at least four years of current employment at a K-12 school or community college can apply for this guaranteed scholarship to attend McDaniel College. Any service qualifies, such as teachers, administrators, counselors, or support staff, as long as the employment is directly through the school or college.

WESTMINSTER, MD (11/12/2024)-- McDaniel College has awarded Sean O'Halloran of Parsonsburg (21849) with an Educator's Legacy Scholarship valued at up to $132,000, or $33,000 annually over four years. O'Halloran is a graduate of Stephen Decatur High School.

Students with a parent or guardian with at least four years of current employment at a K-12 school or community college can apply for this guaranteed scholarship to attend McDaniel College. Wicomico County Government Offices will be closed Monday, November 11, 2024, in observance of the Veteran’s Day holiday.

VETERAN’S DAY HOLIDAY SCHEDULE

On Monday, November 11, 2024, the Newland Park Landfill, Convenience Center and Brush Pile will be opened. All external Convenience Centers, Whitehaven Ferry and Upper Ferry will be closed in observance of the Veteran’s Day holiday.

Tammy Voigt Named to President's List at University of Maryland Global Campus

Tammy Voigt of Salisbury earned a Master of Business Administration in the summer 2024 term and was named to the President's List at University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC). To qualify for the prestigious list at UMGC, a student must have graduated with a bachelor's or master's degree and a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 4.0.

Makahla Washington of Salisbury joined La Salle University's largest undergraduate class in four years

La Salle University welcomed its largest undergraduate class in four years to begin the 2024-25 academic year, including Makahla Washington of Salisbury, Md. (21804). Washington is a freshman undergraduate student who is studying nursing and among the 600-plus new and transfer students that represented a 23% increase over the previous year.

Ellie Welsh Receives 2024 Phi Kappa Phi Love of Learning Award

Ellie Welsh of Salisbury, Maryland, was recently awarded a Love of Learning Award worth $1,000 from The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation's oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines. Welsh is one of 200 recipients to receive the award.

Love of Learning Awards are designed to help fund post-baccalaureate professional development for active Phi Kappa Phi members including graduate or professional studies, doctoral dissertations, continuing education, travel related to teaching and research, career development and more.

Welsh, graduate student at Hood College, will use funds from the award to support the completion of her Master's degree in Environmental Biology.

Welsh was initiated into Phi Kappa Phi in 2024 at Salisbury University.

Established in 2007, the Love of Learning Program gives 200 awards annually in support of post-baccalaureate professional development. The selection process for a Love of Learning Award is based on the applicant's academic achievement, campus and community service, intended use of award funds as it relates to academic and career goals, and a personal statement.

Since 1932, Phi Kappa Phi's award programs have recognized members and students on its chapter campuses for outstanding academic achievement. In addition to the Love of Learning Program, Phi Kappa Phi awards graduate and dissertation fellowships, study abroad grants, and grants for local, national and international literacy initiatives. Each year more than $1 million is awarded through programs.

To be eligible for the honor, a student must complete at least six credits during the term, earned a grade point average of at least 3.5 for the term, and maintained a cumulative GPA of 3.5 at UMGC.

SNHU Announces Summer 2024 Dean's List

MANCHESTER, NH (09/25/2024)-- It is with great pleasure that Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU) congratulates the following students on being named to the Summer 2024 Dean's List. The summer terms run from May to August.

Full-time undergraduate students who have earned a minimum grade-point average of 3.500 to 3.699 for the reporting term are named to the Dean's List. Full-time status is achieved by earning 12 credits over each 16-week term or paired 8-week terms grouped in fall, winter/spring, and summer.

HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE COLLECTION DAY

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 12, 2024
8:00 AM – 2:00 PM

Wicomico County residents will have an opportunity to dispose of hazardous household waste at no charge on Saturday, October 12, 2024, at the Newland Park Landfill. The hours for “Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day” are 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM. The event is open to residents of Wicomico County and participants should bring a valid proof of residence such as a driver’s license. The Landfill will be accepting the following:

Gasoline (10 gallons max) Gas/Oil mixes (10 gallons max)
Fuel Acid Cleaners
Solvents Automotive Fluids
Bleach Ammonia
Batteries (all types) Household Smoke Detectors
Fluorescent Bulbs (Non Green Tips) Pool Chemicals
Dark Room Chemicals Household & Lawn & Garden Pesticides
Insecticides & Herbicides Painting Products
Compressed Gas Propane cylinders (30 gallons) Oil Based Paint (10 gallons max)
Paint Thinner Thermometer (mercury)
Turpentine Wood Preservatives
Wood Stripping Chemicals

The Landfill will not be accepting the following:

Business Industrial or Commercial Farm Waste Explosives
Ammunition Medical Waste
Radioactive Material Tires
Asbestos

Landfill officials suggest that participants pre-arrange large loads.
Empty fuel containers may be returned upon request and the staff will assist to unload
Vehicles.

Weston Smith of Salisbury, Maryland awarded gold stars for spring 2024 at The Citadel

CHARLESTON, SC (09/25/2024)-- Weston Smith of Salisbury, Maryland is one of the more than 620 cadets and students recognized for their academic achievements during the spring 2024 semester.

Gold stars are awarded to cadets and students at The Citadel who achieved a 3.7 grade point average or higher. Cadets and students who achieve gold star recognition are also placed on The Citadel's dean's list.

Those cadets may wear gold stars on their uniforms throughout the semester following their academic achievement. A gold star recognition certificate is awarded to non-cadet students who meet the requirements; veteran and active duty students are also awarded challenge coins.
