They’re mostly peanut butter (an added sugar kind we accidentally acquired and didn’t like), egg and overripe bananas from the depths of the freezer. I tossed a lot of random things in these (cookie crumbs, m&ms, the salt from the bottom of a bag of nuts) and they turned out like little banana souffles. Love them! It was so fun to chat with Melissa Pflugh Prescott, co-director of the new Center for Food Conservation and Waste Reduction , about helping kids eat well while minimizing food waste at Thanksgiving. Swipe for her tips! And find more at the link in bio.

Melissa is also an assistant professor at Case Western Reserve University, where she studies human behavior around food waste and nutrition, including as it relates to kids. Our conversation centered around little ones, but I think these are great tips for grown-ups too!

🧡 This pig wants your pumpkins! And so do her goat and chicken friends! If you have (not moldy, not painted) pumpkins that are ready to move on, drop them off at a farm. EatOrToss won! Digital Media award in the blog category 🤩🤩🤩

So grateful to the IACP judges, EatOrToss readers and every scientist who has ever responded to my queries! And of course to Ben Moss for all his support always 💕. When I first started the site, I had no idea it would one day lead me to an awards stage in Brooklyn, but I’m now more determined than ever to keep helping people reduce food waste while making safe decisions about what’s ok to eat. Also wacky food facts. Always here to talk about the crazy science of what we eat 🤓.

Before the awards ceremony I attended the IACP Summit. It was awesome and I met so many kind, food media folks—totally recommend it to anyone who writes about food! Congrats to the IACP team on putting together a fantastic event and to all the other finalists and winners for their outstanding work in an industry that’s ever changing.

Now pumped for the next chapter of EatOrToss!

In again to debunk some questionable jar storage hacks that keep popping up on social media.

Just, please be wary of advice to put your fresh produce (which is alive and breathing!) in tightly sealed jars to extend its life. Same goes for leaving anything in water for weeks on end (though a short term stint in water to keep veggies crisp is fine).

And thanks to for expert editing and scientists at and and for sharing insights and helping me parse the science for this story!

In this piece for post my hope was to highlight (without guilt tripping!) the spectrum of ways parents can green up children’s birthday parties. Some require more effort, but some can actually help simplify parents’ lives.

I hope you’ll read (link in bio) and I’d love to hear about your own low-waste party wins!

With thanks to for ideas and insights!
