THE WATERING TROUGH along the National Road in Hopwood, Pennsylvania (22 miles from Confluence) was constructed to water thirsty horses in their travels on the Old Pike in its heyday. From the horse to the railroad to the auto—the trough helped the latter as well. It cooled radiators and brakes. Pictured is a postcard from the 1920s—when roads in America were being constructed and numbered.

This is all I have leftover for pepper plants.

A bunch of hatch chilies, some misc specialties, a handful of ghost and apocalypse scorpions and nearly a tray of poblanos

$1 a piece, .50 cents for the unmarked and $10 for 20 hatch chilies sold all together.

There’s enough left for someone to plant an entire garden if they haven’t thought to yet.

6 free pumpkin, cantaloupe or honeydew or combination.

On December 5, 1925, members of the Brownfield family gathered to dedicate the new White Swan Hotel. Seen here holding the flag that flew over Uniontown when General Lafayette arrived in 1825 are: Elma Breading, Emma Moore, Susan Thorndell, Thomas Brownfield and Walter Brownfield. The flag had been made by the ladies of Uniontown to honor Lafayette. This flag is on display in the rotunda of the courthouse. Elma Brownfield Breading, wife of John Clark Breading, had inherited the flag through her family. She was the daughter of Nathaniel and Guelelma (Mitchell) Brownfield. She was born in Uniontown on February 23, 1852. All of the members of the family helped in the running of the old White Swan Tavern. Two of her five children preceeded her in death. She died in Uniontown on June 25, 1930 at the age of 78. I don't know the year the family donated the flag to the county, so if you have this detail, please let us know. In the meantime, the Fort Necessity Chapter of the DAR is planning a celebration of an historical trail marker of Lafayette's farewell tour on Saturday, June 18th at 2:00 in Eberly Square. Julien Icher, who has been following in Lafayette's footsteps, will be in Uniontown for the dedication of the marker. The Society met with Julien a few years ago. We were happy to show him our statue of Lafayette as well as our painting of Rachel Brownfield Searight, one of the maidens chosen to toss petals at Lafayette's feet and our painting of General Henry White Beeson who guarded Lafayette through his journey. Please plan a trip to our museum this upcoming Sunday. Our guides will be happy to greet you. See you on Sunday. Chris

Did you know that in 1955 dynamite went off inside the Searights Tollhouse? When the last family left the Tollhouse, the Highway Dept. took over the ownership. Although a caretaker also lived there (according to the newspapers) while he was away the dynamite exploded in the kitchen. Had Hugh Graham not built this structure as well as he did, this Tollhouse might have been lost. There are a couple of books that said our Tollhouse was completely destroyed. As you can see the walls were still standing for the most part. The roof was caving in because of neglect. Representative E. Gadd Snider introduced an authorization bill to finance the restoration. It took a lot of arm twisting but he finally achieved his goal. He died not too many years after the restoration was complete. The photo was taken by Earle Forrest in 1956. He wanted his photos to be shared after his death.
