The Culturium has a wonderful interview with Cheval Sombre . He discusses his latest albums, the new Althea EP, and what he's up to now. A truly great read!

Cheval Sombre's intimate interview on his tripartite musical triumph—albums "Time Waits for No One" & "Days Go By", coupled with final EP, "Althea".

The new Cheval Sombre EP is out now. ‘Althea’ is available on all digital platforms, with a limited edition 10” vinyl version available exclusively from:

Fat Elvis Records – https://www.fatelvisrecords.com/products/cheval-sombre-althea-ep

Bandcamp – https://chevalsombre.bandcamp.com/album/althea

Norman Records – https://www.normanrecords.com/records/189798-cheval-sombre-althea

The title track features Dean Wareham on guitar and is a cover of a track from The Grateful Dead’s 1980 album, ‘Go to Heaven’, one of two covers on the EP.

“I’ve always loved the Dead,” says Cheval Sombre (aka Chris Porpora). “Luckily, I got to see them a few times before Jerry Garcia passed away. I always found his voice to contain all the very best things about music – tenderness, toughness, knowing, humanity, sweetness, experience, weariness, innocence.”

The other cover is a version of Dire Straits’ ‘So Far Away’.
“Just as my punk rock friends despised the Dead, so too would Dire Straits have been considered a joke,” says Chris. “But I always found beauty in ‘So Far Away’. Recent experience with isolation brought it back from nostalgia to the fore.”

The EP is rounded out by a crystalline Sonic Boom remix of ‘Are You Ready’, from ‘Days Go By’, the second of the twin albums Cheval released earlier this year.

“Round the time Pete sent me that version, I was listening to it on headphones while walking, and I saw this beautiful car,” explains Chris. “I blinked three times. I don’t think I’d ever seen an Aston Martin before. I wrote Pete and told him: ‘Your mix sounds like this car looks.”

Special thanks to Sonic Cathedral for all their help!

On July 4, 2019 Fat Elvis Records released the debut of Nashville’s American Goon

The band is a side project of Blackfoot Gypsies (now Deeohgee ) drummer Zack Murphy. It all came about after Zack contacted me asking if I would be interested in putting out a record of his new side project. Loving what he was doing with The Blackfoot Gypsies, I jumped at the chance!

It was a super easy record to put out. Zack already had the music recorded (A side “Blood Eagle” / B Side “RoundaKnockout”) as well as the cover and logo designed. I had my brother whip up the standard FER center labels. George Ingram at Nashville Record Productions (truly the best around!) do the lacquer cuts and had the records pressed by Gotta Groove Records in Cleveland, OH.

When deciding on the color variants, with a name like American Goon you must go with Red, White and Blue. Since the cover looked a bit distressed, we did a “dirty” red and blue vinyl, and a cream color white.

July 4th seemed to be the prefect date for the release as well!

It’s a great record! If you haven’t heard it head over to the American Goon social media pages and pick up a copy!

On June 11, 2013 Fat Elvis Records released the label’s first record!

After thinking of starting a record label for quite a while, I finally took the plunge and asked Nashville 2-piece rock n’ roll band, Blackfoot Gypsies (now Deeohgee ), to be the first release.

The band recorded 2 songs in their kitchen and decided on the title “The New Sounds of Transwestern”. After settling on the label name Fat Elvis Records, we were on our way!

We pressed 175 Translucent Blue copies, 175 Translucent Red copies, and 50 numbered Vinyl B**g variants.

I spent Memorial Day weekend spray painting and hand stamping the sleeves. I wanted to do an alternate cover for the Vinyl B**g but wasn’t pleased with the chipboard covers with the rubber stamp. At the last minute, I asked Tom Needham at Broke, Or Made Better if he could come up with something to help me out. He used a deck of cards, a lighter, a trip to Kinkos, and a little paint to make sure they turned out right. I was shocked by how great they turned out. Each of the vinyl b**g records contained a playing card and a Fat Elvis Records sticker.

I was pleased that the first one worked out and wasn’t sure if I would continue after that. At least I had put out one! Here we are several years later, and I am still at it.

Thanks again to Matthew and Zack for taking a chance on a random unknown guy who asks them over the internet if they wat to release a record!

Were you part of that first Blackfoot Gypsies record release? If you still have your vinyl b**g, let’s see it!

On June 10, 2016 Fat Elvis Records released FER-008, Fantastic Negrito “Working Poor”.

I was contacted by Xavier’s team (Hi Field! Hi Malcolm!) asking if I was interested in releasing a new 7 inch record with Fantastic Negrito. They were needing merch to sell for upcoming tour dates. After the success of the first one, I jumped at the chance for a second one!

We settled on the cover (thanks Aaron!) and decided we would do 500 copies on gray vinyl for the release. I asked if I could create a FER exclusive color to sell on my website, and the team agreed. So we decided 400 gray and 100 white.

The pressing plant tried to get a gray color, but the records turned out blue. I think the blue looks better than the gray would have anyway!

On June 11, I put up 50 copies of the blue vinyl, and 100 copies of the white. The records sold out within a couple of hours.

I hope to work with Xavier and his team again at some point, It was a great time!

Were you lucky enough to get a copy? Let’s see it!

On this day in 2016, Fat Elvis Records released the vinyl debut of Atlanta-based band Reverends. The double A-side limited edition 7 inch featured the songs “Witch City” and “The Dark Demon” and cover art from Darren Grealish.

The record came in 5 different versions and a few variants within those versions.

Orange – limited to 100 copies
Pink – limited to 100 copies
Heavy Splatter – 75 copies
Wax Mage – 25 copies (11 of these came with a black and white numbered alternate cover)
Test Press – hand-painted, stamped, and numbered neon pink and orange chipboard covers.

The Wax Mage Variants were sold exclusively to the fairly new Facebook group indiewax. You had to be a member of the group to get one.

A few months after this release, Fat Elvis Records teamed up with Fonoflo Records (RIP) to release the debut LP from Reverends. Since then, the band has released another full-length LP on Little Cloud Record as well as a lathe cut 7 Inch from Chunklet Industries. We can’t wait to hear what they have in store for us next!
